"My daughter told me she was done with Jehovah's Witnesses" - A conversation with Matthew Williams

After dedicating much of his life to Jehovah's Witnesses both as an elder and a bethelite, Matthew's doubts about the organization threatened to exile him from his cherished family. But he was to learn that most of them already felt the same.

I told my JW mother I was done in early 1991. I was disfellowshipped a month later. I was 16 when I was baptized in 1983. I stopped attending meetings in 1985. I was able to fade until I was 24 in 1991. It was ironic that R.E.M.'s "Losing My Religion" was a big hit in 1991 too. It became my anthem, and still is to this day. The lyrics really fit me, and what this cult did to my relationship with my JW mother. I think it's a good song for all ex-JW's, IMO.

@@horselady4375 Possibly, because the scriptures do say Satan transforms his ministers into angels of light. So yes, the Governing Body could in fact be workers of lawlessness and Satanic. We must be on the watch for false teachers and false prophets as Jesus warned. 2 Corinthians 11:14-15 And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. 15 So it is no surprise if his servants, also, disguise themselves as servants of righteousness. When a JW came to me to return to Jehovah in 2016, I told her about the pedophiles being the reason I quit six years before. She told me I could still have eternal life by going to another hall. I actually wasted a moment picturing that horror and the triggers. Pedophiles bounce from one congregation to the next. Even if I didn't see them there, it wouldn't be okay to sit in another hall with hidden criminals. I wouldn't feel better just because I didn't know them and the children the elders tortured to protect the Watchtower.

30 years ago, I was appointed by the Circuit Overseer to serve on an Appeal Committee. The Original Congregation had Disfellowshiped a young man on circumstantial evidence. He had sat up all night with a young woman. He said they talked and listened to music and had no Sexual contact. We upheld the decision of the original judicial committee and Disfellowshipped the young man. I can still see that young man crying so hard he had snot pouring all on his suit jacket. It was terrible what we did to people following Watchtower's instructions. 😢

My brother Keith is that elder, only he didn’t apply his BS rules to himself. Just everyone else. If he were alive in Jesus day he would have been one of the Pharisees certainly not a follower of Jesus. I jokingly say that if Jesus were alive today he would be telling him that’s not how you walk on water, that’s not how you heal the blind. He preached about how it’s our Christian duty and to clean the assembly hall and then publishers will go up to my other brother and say “where’s Keith? He went on this tirade about cleaning and yet he’s not here” and all my brother could do was shrug. He’s an awful awful human being, he treated our parents abominably, bully them, threaten them, but to the congregation he was this wonderful person always willing to help, and because my mom was awesome would snort and tell them to be thankful they aren’t related to him. I have told many people still close to me that I won’t be part of a religion where he is looked at as being in good standing and I’m a loser, and if paradise is going to be filled with people like him and his equally vile wife, then no thanks, I’d rather be dead. I told my other elder brothers the same and I think they are now realizing what kind of impact he has had on my life. Nothing I ever did was good enough, I have never had so much as even a thank you when I basically raised his 3 kids for him, bought ALL their clothes and what I got was that dress wasn’t long enough, or too low cut, which it NEVER was. No surprise his 3 children have nothing to do with him and moved far away from him and their step-monster.

ssf Heather, Your brother sounds like he's very egotistical. If I had to guess, serving as a Jehovah's Witness Elder must give him a power trip. It sounds me like most of your Witness relatives don't even want anything to do with him. When you have people who act like that, why would anyone ever want to live on a Paradise Earth with them for all of eternity? To me, that would Hell.

@@b.w.7588 very much so, he’s a narcissist as his wife and together they are just horrific. And no my other brothers don’t want to have anything to do with them. Keith spent the last 20 years hell bent on destroying us because we had the audacity to tell him he was making a mistake with his 2nd wife, she was reinstated on Thursday and their first date was that Saturday. He used her brother to get in with her and then dumped him and his kids for her, and we said that what he was doing was going to destroy his kids and he didn’t care and now they have nothing to do with him. He wasn’t allowed to get married in the KH because of how they got together. But of course they fail to mention that tidbit. Our parents died last year within 5 months of each other and 30 days after mom died he wanted to know where HIS money is, and had the audacity to complain that our parents spent too much of HIS money. He thought that he was going to boss our mom around after dad died and that just shows how mush he didn’t know who his mom was, or me, because anytime they bullied her mommy called me to handle it, and I put him and his bitch wife in their place. If I wrote a book critics would say that his character was unrealistic, but nope…all true!! No one child or adult alike wants someone basically saying do as I say not as I do. He would 1 million % would have been a Pharisee in Jesus day.

My brother said that he would buy the man a suit and he can change into it at the kingdom Hall before the meeting. Because I reminded him if he gave him a suit he wouldn't be able to put it anywhere. Anyway, I thought that was awful because my friend would feel like he wasn't good enough and would make him even more embarrassed. Of course my brother didn't understand so I gave up. My husband of 28 years is seriously considering becoming a baptized JW member. He was raised as one, but never was baptized. Both his parents are deceased and when I met him he promised me that he would NEVER join that organization. Idk what to do. I am devastated. He has heart disease, so he is afraid and scared right now, and recently started attending bible study and Sunday services. I have talked with him about the shunning policy, and he says that it is a lie. I am a licensed mental health therapist, so I know that it is true, as I have had to counsel people who have been hurt by this organization. I told him that I believe their goal would be to separate us. He says it is not true. I need to know more. Please help me.

It has to me one of the hardest things in the world to do, to come out as a "doubting Thomas" about the JW faith, and then for Matthew's son to come as gay, that opens a whole other can of worms. Coming out as LGBT, I'm sure, isn't easy either. I imagine that when you're an Elder, you probably don't think about the possibility of your kids identifying as LGBT and cannot imagine them being disfellowshipped or choosing to leave the faith of their own volition. The idea of their children questioning their parents or guardians' religion has to seem almost unfathomable to a JW Elder. Maybe that has to do with the whole Preacher's Kid phenomenon. Children of religious leaders are expected to be highly devout, even more so than your average lay member of a church. They're expected to adhere to a higher standard. And when they don't live up to that standard, it's going to come as huge shock most likely.

If you were an elder and disfellowshipped someone that new light says that is not a disfellowshipping offense how would you feel. If you were an elder that told a young girl that you don’t have two witnesses to your molestations and you later found out that person later raped and molested more children how would you feel. There was no way I will tell a friend to not allow a blood transfusion for your child. If I am an elder no doubt I would get those type of phone call even from close friends. If I see a dad being like the prodigals dad I would not sit that man before a Judicial committee. When the GB admitted they are not spirit directed nearly all JW’s believe that somehow they are spirt directed. In a recent talk by Kenneth Cooke he is saying, you should look at them as spirt directed. His talk also debunks what Jeffery Jackson said about it would be presumptuous to say that they are Gods one and only Channel.

I feel it's silly when people say that the ark doesn't make sense because Noah couldn't logically feed the animals. But, they believe that Jesus fed thousands with a few fish and pieces of bread. Jesus _and_ Moses spent 40 days without food. Why is Noah's Ark so different? Spoiler Alert: I'm an atheist.

It’s very simple…god magic. But on the point of fasting there are modern day examples of people water fasting for 40 days for health/other reasons. I watched one podcast with a doctor saying that water fasting for 40 days is the limit most people can fast without long term damage to their bodies. I’m sure different doctors have different opinions but a 40 day fast is possible.
