Always used Mobil 1 Fully Syn, but recently bought a couple of gallons of Kirklands Fully Syn due to a sale. Both are Dexos certified. As far for oil filters, I always used OEM Mazda filters . Never had a problem and it's priced well.

I have the same car and love it. Use Wix filters if you do your own oil changes. Do a quick search on youtube here and you will understand. Some of them (Fram) just have some paper inside them.

@@axltobe2 Kirkland oil is made by a company that makes tons of different branded oils. They are fully certified to provide excellent protection in modern vehicles. I have been running Kirkland in my ACURA TSX 2.4L and my 2019 Suburban LT 5.3L for the last several oil changes and I think it's fine. Most important is regular oil changes and not beating on your car.

Hey James , good DIY, just good to mention that when you replace the oil , you should replace the crush washer on the drain plug as well, it prevents a seal on the plug and the oil pan, if the old one is crushed over and over it can dig into the oil pan

Especially since even the OEM ones are only like $1.50

Two points, once you have run the engine a few seconds to insure the filter is full and check the oil level - you do not have to start it again to recheck the oil if you added more oil. 2nd. You checked the oil quickly after turning off the engine. It will always read low if the oil has not had time to drain back into the pan. Always wait a short time such as 5 minutes to do the oil level check after running the engine and about 2 minutes if you only added oil. .

Tip: Slip a plastic bag over the oil filter before you unscrew it. It will capture any oil dripping out and over your hands and arms.

Or punch a hole in the bottom of the filter , you can use a steel nail or even screw to drain the oil from the bottom of the filter first before unscrewing it

Great video couple of notes. 1) Use 2x4 wood blocks or wheel blocks to prevent the car from rolling instead of jack stands. 2) Break cleaner is better than degreaser. 3) Use a torque ranch to prevent over torque.

Your vids helped me decide on purchasing my CX-30 and now got me up to speed on the oil change process! Pick up my car later this week

I like to fill the oil filter the day( or hours) before. The oil will soak into filter; what's nice is the CX-30 has a vertical filter, oil won't leak when you install it.

Make sure to check the gasket on the old filter came off with the filter. If it stays behind you will have two gaskets on and you will get a leak.

Pretty good video - thanks. One thing, no need for the filter wrench/strap. Hand tightening the filter about a 1/4 or 1/2 turn after contact has served me well for the 35 years I've done my own oil changes. Just try removing the 'new' filter (by hand) once you start the car, after completing the oil change - you can't! The pressure within the engine is so great it's next to impossible. Oh, one more thing - stick to the latex gloves, as used motor oil ruins mechanic-style gloves. Oh, and another thing (ha) OEM oil filters are of top quality, fit properly, readily available at your local dealership, and competitively priced. Getting to know your Mazda parts staff has its benefits too. If you develop a good rapport with them, chances are you'll be receiving those filters at a reduced price, and perhaps get the the odd crush washer thrown in.

I also just hand tighten when putting on the filter. The wrench/strap was just needed to remove the old one. Great tips, thanks for sharing your experience!

Cool video, remember to keep receipts and maintenance log for warranty purposes.

A tip I do: if your filter is vertical like our cx 30, you pre fill the filter with oil before screwing or on. It reduces the inaccuracy of your first measure and reduces the time the engine has without oil at first startup.

Mechanic of 27 years here you don’t want to use jackstands on ramps because if it rolls back it’s not gonna stop the car , you want to use wheel chocks behind the back tires?

I very recently learned the hard way what oil filter wrench I should use. It’s pretty much an oil filter sized socket for a socket wrench.

Really good video. One thing I recommend is to fill the filter with oil before installing. Oil pressure will build faster at start up.

Nice video, thanks for posting. I do my oil changes myself, I do it almost exactly like you. Only thing I want to mention is that after breaking the oil filter loose and it's starts draining, just leave it alone for a minute so the oil drains on it's own into your pan. Also, I think if you check your oil level again, it will be near the top instead of the middle. Most cars, I've found you need to drive them a few miles to get an accurate reading right after an oil change or cold start, as the oil is too viscous and doesn't drain down to the pan to get an accurate reading when cold.

When I change oil on vehicles with oil filter oriented like that I first just loosen the filter a tiny bit to make sure I can get remove it. I then take a punch and punch a hole in the top of the filter to let all the oil drain out. This way when I unscrew the filter I get a lot less mess.

A you pull the dip stick before draining the oil... And B you fill thrbfilter half way up before screwing it back on .

I have found that when checking the dipstick on my 2022 CX 30 you should wait several hours before rechecking the level again (from a hot engine) since for some reason it takes a long time for all the oil to drain back into the pan. You added 5 quarts and still show not completely full on the stick. It's best to check again over night !!

Nice video. 1. always check and change as required the drain plug washer. 2. A final check of the oil level the next morning as oil settles over night. Always fill to the TOP oil level mark. Just a hint, take of the engine cover while doing an oil change and have a look at the rest of the motor/engine bay, for anything that looks out of place, damaged or worn. The more familiar you are with your engine bay the easier it is to spot potential issues.

When I got to the prepping the filter section I was really hoping you weren't going to say to fill the oil filter because that is completely unnecessary LOL. No issue with putting oil on the gasket obviously, put pre-filling the filter is pointless and not recommended by many manufacturers/mechanics. Great video and thanks for making it.

Oil is needed immediately during engine-start to move the bearings apart to prevent bearing damage. While the pump is filling the empty filter, it's not supplying oil to the bearings - there's nothing "LOL" about it.

@@kurtbilinski1723 There is already oil in the engine (even after draining it 😲) and the filter is primed within seconds. If your car has a way to prime the oil filter with something like a "flood mode" then why not use it, but pre-filling the filter is silly. If you dump oil into the center of the filter you're delivering unfiltered oil directly to the bearings as well which could turn out poorly. You could pre-fill the filter using the holes on the periphery of the filter but it's really not worth the hassle. Also, LOL.

Have you considered doing your trans fluid when it’s time? I’d LOVE to see that video. Thanks for this one you rock!

I just bought that exact car yesterday. Just to add something to DIY oil changes, make sure you hear that click when you unscrew the "new" oil container and don't blindly start dumping the oil in without checking it. I got used oil in a container once from the auto supply store. Someone had scammed the store and brought it back for a refund as unused. The oil I got was darker than a coal miner's arse. Luckily for me I caught it right away and the store believed me when I told them what happened.

I have one and thinking about doing it myself.

Thank you for the good pointers. One question I would like to ask is should the car/truck be hoisted up level to ensure all the old oil being drained out completely or would it has the same result with having the car/truck front wheels driving onto the ramps (as in your case) for accessibility. You don’t need jack stand for that, you need a stopper on your tires when using a ramp. Jack stands are used when you jack up your car. Hahaha

For those who want to know, Mazda has a patent in the oil filter so it holds oil under pressure on cold starts. You should only use OEM Mazda Filters. They're not expensive, why save money on something so critical?

Did you chock the rear wheels after the raising the vehicle on the ramps?

Beware of the double gasket error!!! If the old filters gasket gets left behind and you screw the new one on... you'll have a big mess. 😢 happened to me.

From my experience, with my 2021 it definitely takes a full 5 quarts and if you don't keep it there then you may notice it running a bit rough

@@SJ-666 So this post is at least a year old, I have learned a lot since then. Yes 4.8 qts is ideal. However, from my very 1st oil change, at pre drain check the technicians kept telling me it was about a half a quart low, I have had the car checked and checked and they don't know why, nothing seems a miss. I think it's just inaccurate because of course the engine is still warm when you get there and it takes a bit for it to flow back down towards the dip stick. All cars of the same make and model are certainly not exactly the same, my identical loaner car ran completely different, felt different in power and responsiveness. So they can be like jeans, same style and size but that doesn't mean they will fit the same.

You're welcome! At 5:40 if you want to be careful you can use a torque wrench set to the correct torque specification. However, I just did it by hand for convenience and I have a decent feel for how tight it should be. When pouring the oil, the oil jug itself has markings on the side to let you know how many quarts are left in the jug. Hope that helps!

You didn't mention that the oil should be Synthetic. Move your tools off of the oil catcher and poke a hole in the bottom of the oil filter before you unscrew it. It's less messy that way. Otherwise good video. The 1st oil change for my CX-30 was free at my Texas dealer.

I Suggest Fumoto Aftermarket valves for anyone that wants mess free oil changes. You can also use a center punch to drain oil out of canister filters without spilling all over. Great video otherwise thanks !

I'm sorry but, A block behind the rear tire would be more of a safety measure for a car on ramps. Those jack stands are a pointless. Im waitng on a 2022 CX-30 that has 3k on it.

Damn you get Royal Purple? Treating your cars so nice lol. Mazda was nice too with 4.8 quarts. Means you just dump the whole 5 quart jug in. I think as long as its no more than .5 quarts over then you're OK. Plus if it burns a bit then you wont have to top it off at all between oil changes.

Hi James: Have you try to CHANGE THE front diff gear oil?

Which code of oil you used ? 5w30 ?

How much did you tighten the oil drain plug? I know you put 23-30 lb ft on the screen, but I don’t have a torque wrench that lets me set torque. I saw you might’ve also just tightened it by feel? I’ve read to hand tighten as much as you can, then tighten another 90 degrees (1/4th circle), is that how much you do? Thanks!

They serve no purpose. You want wheel chocks behind the back wheels so it doesnt roll back

Hi James, great video I am from Canada and I just bought this car in the Turbo GT which is the top trim here. I love it, however, the only thing that I came to realize after buying it is that the ones that are sold here in Canada do not come with the chrome roof rales, or the front and 360 camera only the back camera. I have checked it out at all Mazda Canada Dealerships before and after buying it and it's like that at all of them. Would you be able to say why? if you can it would be very helpful as I would like to know why only this top trims in the US and Europe have it and not here in Canada.

Hi Boeing F, I don’t have information on why the chrome roof rack is not offered in Canada, but it does seem that the 360 camera situation is explained by the fact that the trim levels top out lower in Canada than in the US. In the US, you have to go to Turbo Premium Plus to get the 360 cameras, whereas it appears the top end Canadian model is equivalent to Turbo Premium here. Of course that leaves the question open as to why Mazda limits the trim level range in Canada, but only marketing executives will have that insider information. Hope that helps provide some context! Also, luckily the roof rails are available for purchase, and can readily be installed as a DIY.

@@JamesPlaysWithCars Thanks for your reply, I figured the same as well. It's strange that Mazda would not offer that to us here in Canada. I love my CX-30 but the 360 with the front camera would have been great to have as well. I choose the turbo not only because of it being the top trim here but also because of the black gloss rims it comes with. It really blends in well with the black plastic on the sides and looks great with the red. I did a lot of research on it before buying it and also have to say watching your videos on it help me with choosing it as well. I look out for your videos on this car so I can learn more about it as well so please continue to post more. If you are ever in Toronto let me know as well it would be nice to meet you and take you for a drive in my CX-30 Turbo. lol

Thanks Expellix! I set that service mileage reminder to an arbitrarily large number because I prefer not to have it nag me. I just check maintenance items periodically and do maintenance when needed, as opposed to following mileage recommendations (except for oil, which you can’t really check the condition of).

@@JamesPlaysWithCars Ah, I see haha. I think you might be able to directly delete that distance value or clear it out by setting “Next Service Date” to Automatic and back, to stop it from nagging. I’m not 100% sure though. Arbitrarily large number works fine too! Also, how frequently do you intend on doing oil changes for your CX-30? I ask because I’ve seen a few figures recommended by various sources, so it’s confusing. For the US, I think the manual says every 10,000 miles / 12 months (whichever comes first) under normal driving conditions, and every 5,000 miles / 6 months under severe driving conditions. I’ve also seen a recommendation of every 7,500 miles / 6 months thrown around as well by the dealer.

Nice video. Did you happen to inspect the drain plug to check for break in metal shavings? Also, will your MX5 fit on those ramps with the lower ground clearance? Did you say where you purchased the ramps? I have an ND MX5 and am currently shopping for a CX30 for my daughter, your videos have been very helpful!

Hi Bob, thanks for the kind words and I'm glad the videos have been helpful! I didn't see any shavings on the drain plug, but I should have mentioned that it's good to take look at the plug and wipe off any shavings. The ramps are: smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B0117EETEK/ The MX-5 scrapes a bit coming up the ramps, but you can put a little block of wood at the base of the ramp to help get the car on without scraping the front lip. is it true that you should change the oil earlier for the first oil change? My 2021 Mazda 3 sedan has 7500mi increment, but seeing some people online say to change it 4000-5000

If you want to be extra careful, then yes! The first oil change can be earlier to clear out any metal shavings that may come off of the engine components during the break-in period. This is less critical in modern times since engine manufacturing has much tighter tolerances than in decades past, but many people still prefer to do the early oil change to be on the safe side. Hope that helps!

I think it depends on how you drive the car, my Mazda 3 2021 had it at 5,000 miles but I changed it at 4,000 miles. I am planning on keeping this car for a while so a few extra dollars worth of maintenance is cheap insurance. My car has the 2.5G natural aspirated engine.

@@joliewu8625 The manual says to change it every 5,000 miles when driving in severe driving schedule. At 4,000 miles it didnt look too bad. I have an old nissan with 2.5 naturally aspirated engine with 195,000 miles and engine works as new, oil intervals done at 5,000 miles. So going 5,000 miles between oil services is a very good interval and probably staying in the conservative side of the lifespan of the oil. I always use fully synthetic oil with a mid range oil filter.

Luckily, no loss in warranty. In the US, the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act says that manufacturers can deny a warranty claim only if they can demonstrate that the owner’s work on their car specifically caused the failure. So, as long as you do the work correctly, or the work doesn’t cause any specific damage to the car, your warranty is intact.

Be sure to keep copies of receipts for the oil change components and an accurate date/mileage log of when you performed the changes.

Good question. My understanding is that under US law, the warranty is only voided with respect to a particular problem with the car if the manufacturer can show that the owner caused the problem while servicing the car. In other words, servicing the car doesn’t void the warranty unless you actually break something while doing so.

You waited 8k for the first oil change, why ?? Oil is cheap... And the break in period super important.. why wait that long to get rid factory oil..

Typically between 5000 and 10000 miles is good. Depends on your budget, and how much you care about your engine. Spending small amounts of money on oil and filter changes will make the engine last much longer, like forever.

I dislike 0w20 a lot. Not good for scorching hot temperatures at all.

Agreed re: hot temps. For anyone living in a hot climate, 5W-30 is better (should be safe because it is the oil grade Mazda uses in many countries for these engines).

I have always used 0w20 on my Honda Accord 198k miles and no issues. I live in Houston and it gets really hot.

Don’t leave your tool in the oil drain pan.

I drop the 5 quarts and don't even check the oil levels 😂😂

Mine is metal! I have not heard of Mazda using plastic ones.

Yep, 0w-20 is what the manual calls for in the US and Canada, whereas it recommends 5w-30 elsewhere.

dont buy cheap oil filters off amazon. spend the money on the proper filter.
