I visited Cambodia for the first time last month. Ive always enjoyed my life here in Arizona, USA, but spending the whole month of June all around Cambodia has really opened up my eyes to the beauty of the Country and the Opportunities there. I'm a video editor & have already committed to moving to Kampot by next March when I can find stable remote work. Your video was so insightful, Jon-- thank you Kindly for sharing! Best regards

Happy Fourth of July! Congratulations again on the move. Your willingness to share the expense of your lifestyle is much appreciated and valued due to your presentation which exudes credibility. You are a good salesperson. At least initially I imagine for myself a small, modern, well located one bedroom apartment, even a studio if it was superbly located. The little bungalows I’ve seen on Face Book might do after I am acclimated. I look forward to saying hello before Christmas.

Thank you for your kind words. There are many one bedrooms and studios available right in middle of town. I would urge new comers to stay at a guest house and explore the area to truly evaluate the options and what part of town suits you best. An example would be a short walking distance to specific places you enjoy. If you plan on being here for a long time, location is the most important. Stay short term somewhere for a week or two and really find out where exactly you want to lay your head at night. Thank you for watching and I look forward to seeing you in town.

@@JonAbroad Good advice. My current plan is to arrive PP and then transfer to Kampot. (I'm not interested at all in PP) A few weeks in Kampot and then on to Bangkok for a few weeks to catch up on what's changed...lol.. I'll finish in Siem Reap and decide if Kampot is calling me. That's why I'm starting with Kampot; so I can get the feeling. Good to know you. I'm looking forward to playing pool... a lot. In fact, I expect that the 'pool scene' will be a major factor in my decision. Thanks.

I've been living in Thailand for three years. Just moved to Siem Reap. Been looking around Kampot online. Looks good. Miss the beach already. Coming down June 1 for a closer look. Lets have a beer. Be good to talk with another American

I've never rented a moto once I moved here. Used motos are inexpensive depending on what you are looking for. For example a used airblade is less than $500 and they work just fine.

Like your channel and the content. I have a motorcycle newbie question (I noticed you ride a big bike). I don't have experience with motorcycles. Would it be possible to find moto riding training in Cambodia (I plan on getting a moto drivers license too). I do understand that no license is needed for bikes 125cc or less. Are there training schools or just pay some random person for lessons?

Remember to keep your throttle wrist in a low position. if you clutch out too quick and get pulled by the bike, you'll end up decelerating (wrist moves up) and be safe. If it's too high, you'll accelerate and make a bad situation worse.

I don't have health insurance. I know, it's a bit silly. I have recently converted to a ER retirement visa.

Thailand is much cheaper for electric, I never need to use Aircon just a fan, being next to the sea, it’s around $20 a month for a 50sgm studio

Electric is expensive in Cambodia by the KwH. In comparison in the state I loved in it was 11 cents per KwH. My house is large with 2 floors, it takes a bit to keep it comfortable in the hot season.

Rent is by far the biggest factor in the cost of living. Electric will go up with a larger house as well. I have chosen to upgrade my home, get a little more space and have paved roads.

Hey Jon from your previous video, I can see that you live in a Khmer style borey house. I live in Kampong Cham with exactly the same style house but the rent is only 200$. The compromise is, Kampong Cham is a boring ass town hahaha

To be fair it's the location that has the rent high and it's a new construction. I've only rode through Kampong Cham, I've never stopped to explore. Perhaps after rainy season I'll take the big moto out there. Any suggestions on sights to see? Are the roads decent for a street bike or should I consider renting a small moto when I'm there?

May I ask how did you find your houses for rent in Kampot?

Facebook groups are a large help. In Kampot there is a Facebook group named "Kampot notice board" people selling stuff, asking for help, restaurants. It has a search function and is a great help.

Seems very inexpensive for the size place you have & the life you live. -- I hear Siem Reap comes in a little cheaper and more to do ? -- I'm retired and somewhat frugal but insist on being comfortable & eating good. Health care has to be a higher priority so Siem Reap has the edge there. Primarily a cheap one hour flight to Bangkok for affordable quality medical & some fun a time or two per year ? Likely will visit Kampot for the experience. Several expats love it. -- Thanks for the info and don't forget to have some gratitude for your situation. Many likely envy it but can't do it ?

Siem Reap is a great place to live with the ease of the airport being so close. Kampot is near the coast and I enjoy the weather better down here. I have had a few friends from my home town move out here. I very much enjoy my way of life and what I do here. One thing I do wish is that I had more ideas for making videos. I've never really been the creative type. The channel is a hobby of sorts but I do enjoy the editing process as I'm learning so much from it. Almost all of mine have passed - family too - happens if you live long enough I suppose ? -- Bokor Mountain is also nice near there Siem Reap doesn't have & even cooler temps. ? Or the beach if your into that ? -- Not so sure you would want to advertise the beauty of your life there w/o the risk of ruining it from additional excessive growth ? I'm a poor one for that type of creativity myself. I can only suggest perhaps duplicating the most success you can find / the wheel has already been invented. -?- Best of luck and remember the gratitude.

Easiest way is to come in on a E "tourist" visa, find an agent to convert to a one year ER visa. Just bring your SS statement. As long as it shows you have income monthly, it's fairly easy and straight forward. You can extend as much as you want.

My mistake, I've been on the ER for a while now but due to my age I have to show the source of my pension. I apologize for giving you wrong information, I guess I didn't account for the age in my reply.

Am I missing something here? Value for money and he lives on his own. Why does he need so many bedrooms and bathrooms? How dirty do you get when you run a washing machine for your clothes and can do a wash of all your dirty clothes together once. Do you need to run 3 air-cons in separate rooms. Ever heard of a stand up fan? $150 a month water bill? You may as well go outside and give your money away to anybody who walks past. How much would you be paying in the Capitol City of Phnom Penh like me? Would you like to know my whole cost of living for a month? Not even a quarter of what he spends and come and see my place............... If I wanted to go Kampot at any moment a rented room I know of with everything, yes pretty much everything is $8.00 a night. $200 a month all in. Room, balcony and no neighbours either side of my room or even on my floor and basically top of the building. Also a huge Khmer restaurant downstairs whose most of the staff pick out impurities for Birds nest soup under lighting. ( Happy staff of 2- 3 girls who are happy in their work and not slave labour at all. Even the manager or manageress join in to do it sometimes.) No worries about security because the owner is a police officer. Who looks very smart when he goes out for duty. My train ride there with my electric bicycle will be $7 to $ 8.00. If I got VIP mini bus that would be $15.00. Is he sure that he is in Kampot? Does he have a kitchen and can he cook once and a while? How long has he lived here.? Is he one of these new KZreadrs with a nice modern camera and telling us his cost of living like why? Yes, I have subscribed to his channel and will be interesting to see the next content he posts.

I guess I'm saying that a budget of 1k is fine. My concern is whether you are saving money as well for any emergencies that you might run into. 1K a month isn't going to allow you to save much cash. Always make sure to have a contingency plan.

Easily if your base costs are Rent $250 for a nice 1 bedroom apartment or studio .Use fans during the day that have 45 watt motors that cost stuff all & have an efficient AC unit with clean filters & run that from Midday to late night , then use a fan in the bedroom to sleep. My electricity bill was usually $45 a month doing that. Internet in most apartments is Free , included. Water is stuff all. So….it just comes down to food. If you shop at markets & cook ..the cost is minimal. Eat out everyday easily $500/$600 month for basic meals, nothing too fancy. Then there’s alcohol which leads to WOMEN & then the expences really kick in. The beers cheap…..but have a woman hanging around & your outside meal bill will at least DOUBLE & you’ll be picking up the Tab for her other expences , loan sharks, gambling debts, family illnesses, funerals…etc But…if you cook most meals, have a few beers locally , enjoy a couple of nights out at restaurants …$1000 would cover it. Health insurance is another matter for a later date & mention,

To each their own. Your summers are hot and humid as well. As a bonus though, it never gets anywhere near as cold as Baltimore gets in the winter. That being said, I'm not sure there is a "perfect" climate, I do miss having the seasons. I really don't acclimate well to the cold and I'm very happy to not have to experience those.
