    The first thing that everyone needs to know about gybing is that it is not a relaxed transition. You need to be committed, concentrating and fully body powered. When you are free riding with feet into footstraps and harness it’s very comfortable and relaxed. But gybing is a fully athletic transition . Don’t be realaxed . Focus and spend energy through the transition in order to get out of the gybe fully planning

    Thanks Nico, your videos are so helpful. Ive been sailing for 3 decades, with breaks for having children, and at 61 I'm still chasing the planning carve jibe. All your suggestions have helped me immensely and I'm getting there. We're heading into winter in Australia but I'll be out there practising your moves every chance i get. Keep the videos coming I'm a huge fan! 😊

    There are so many things to take care about in a short term and no jibe is similar to each other because of gusts, chop and so on. Some windsurfer can jump a frontloop before they can do a proper power jibe. Greetings from Germany

    Nice job Nico :-)) I'll tell you what: I have been windsurfing for decades. For a long time I really had problems during the transition phase of the jibe when you are flipping the sail. My board slowed down, I was able to flip the sail but then I found myself in an awkward position in the new tack because the board went too much upwind, slowed down considerably, and most times I found myself in the water. It was no good! Then I found the trick! You have to "really" lean forward when you get into the turn and be "assertive" about it. People get scared of leaning forward because they think that something bad is gonna happen with all that speed, they lean backwards, the board slows down to standstill, and they fall into the water. You've got to do just the opposite: leaning forward aggressively saves you from going into the water :-) The second thing is to flip the sail as you are carving. If you flip the sail after the board turns, it will just take too much time to grab the other side of the boom, and again you find yourself in an awkward situation because the board loses all its momentum (you are not planing), and sinks, and again you find yourself in the water. Great video though.

    I was going to suggest Lars swap his grip from under hand to over hand before the Jibe, I sail with under hand grip on the front hand, and had to get into the habit of swapping my hand over before I jibe, but I see you caught that. The nice thing is gabbing the boom underhand, and you're already set!! I enjoy this type of video with looking at jib analysis, its a very complex move, it takes a very long time to get it right, I am still progressing to be as good as I can possibly be, I am planing most of the toime out of my jibes and feeling comfortable. But it has taken a lot of very hard work!! Perhaps a good subject to discuss might be the difference between jibing a Slalom Free/Race type board and a Free Wave type board. (iSonic or Futura versus a Kode or Ultra Kode?) I have two Kodes and one Futura, they do jibe differently, I wonder if you have something you can tell us about the difference between jibing the two different type of boards? Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience!! Greetings from New Zealand.

    Lars is a good mate and your critique will help a lot of people with their jibing. I was happy when he moved his front hand forward before flipping, but sadly that was after he went underhand.

    Thanks Nico. Improving takes a lot of thinking and mind preparation. Good detail spoting is essential. I have improved a lot in the previous years thanks for foiling, wich is 95% of my riding now. But I think many should give it a try. Foil is more demanding but overall easier : you sail smaller, no chops (dreamy smooth ride), you glide longer depowered, so you have way more time to concentrate on your movement, 10 times more opportunity to train as you can fly as soon as you have over 12kt (with a wave sail). And if you don't make it correctly it simply doesn't work whereas you can do it incorrectly for years with a fin and still manage to avoid swimming. And this leads to carve incorrect technique in your musle memory. Just don't think foiling as an extention of slalom. Keep on riding.

    The most useful advice I've given myself... never wait until the edge of the strong wind to practice jibing. Initiate the jibe well within the wind zone. I tend to wait until I'm at the edge of the lake where the winds are gustier and end up losing wind as I throw a jibe. I'm going to have to get some footage to you! Your videos are awesome!

  • @gatesurfer
    @gatesurfer2 жыл бұрын

    He’s not sheeting enough and not bending his knees enough. It’s almost better to sail in overpowered conditions to learn this. What happens in that situation is that the moment you unhook, you have to get real low, into almost a sitting position with your knees very bent, to stay sheeted in. That’s where the term “hanging from the boom” comes from. You take your back foot out of the strap, still saying in that low position, and then, rather than actively trying to turn the board, just let the sail pull you upright so that your head is above or slightly ahead of your knees. But keep in that sheeted in position with your back arm. You want to go from that low, seated position into what I consider to be a typical, athletic stance - leaning slightly forward, but with the head and shoulders up, knees slightly bent to be absorbing bumps. You see similar a similar position in almost all sports - tennis’ ready position, skiing, basketball, a goalie in soccer awaiting a free kick. It’s balanced and strong, and you can make adjustments very easily from it. If you let the sail pull you into that position with the sail sheeted in, the board will begin to turn, simply because the sail’s Center of effort will be pulling you into an arc. From there you can make a slight adjustment with your feet, lifting your front foot or pointing your back foot, to shape your carve. But he’s so upright that every bump gets transferred to his upper body, and so of course he’s going to be off balance. And if you let the sail sheet out when you unhook or take your back foot out of the strap, the board is going to straighten out and you’ll have to try to force it through the arc, which is difficult to do. He should switch his front hand to an overhand grip just before the jibe, you are correct, but he should go for an underhand on the new tack, because he can reach further down the boom on the new tack.

  • @markoconnor680

    His first attempt was made in wind and tidal flows which appeared to be slightly strong for any early attempts, but his last attempt was made with slight improvements. Rig size and tightness are important to determine whether or not the gybe can be performed with ease and smoothly also.

    Nice video with specific advice! Regarding Lars: he's not keeping enough pressure on the mast base after un-hooking, is he? Good training exercise: take a wide grip (back hand far back - more than you think 😉), then un-hook and learn to keep the speed and pressure in a straight line first. Helped me a lot! 🤙

    I noticed that in some of Lars' jibes he was unhooking and then taking his back foot out the strap almost at the same time. I usually unhook first, then reposition my back foot three or four seconds later. I think doing both things at nearly the same time could contribute to some of the bouncing he was doing.

    Hallo Niko! My windsurfing jibes are much like Lars; I lean back too much and the sail flip troubles me. I generally finish the jibe, and most of the time I stay dry. On the foil, the movements are much less, as I often loose the carve and turn the other way if my feet aren’t right. I hope to improve my foil jibes, but I think I should windsurf more to practice the jibe.

    A question Nico, I wonder what the main benefit of laying down the sail in a jibe is , beyond looking great 😊 so basicslly curious about the technical aspects, e.g., is it to depower or a way of keeping power or turning faster, etc. I really have no idea 🤷‍♂️ cheers ☺️

  • @avivbgaming

    @avivbgaming

    Laying down the sail usually comes from a point of depowering the sail while keeping the speed, usually when going extremely fast or having a big sail that would just rip out of your arms at the rig flip

  • @atonenjr

    @atonenjr

    2 жыл бұрын

    If you do not close (lay down) the sail in jibe it remains powered up. If it is powered up you have to move back on the board to hold it. If you move back on a board during the jibe you will sink the tail. If you sink the tail you will stop. Back to step one, lay down the sail, depower it, move your weight more forward on the board, engage the whole rail of the board for smoother turn.

    I feel like Lars' jibes look very similar to mine especially when I'm getting tired, and I finish the jibe reaching for the boom and stalling the board in the process. I have listened to you Nico, and others and tried to keep the front arm extended, and my body close to the sail, but this more often that not sees me hooking back into the harness just before flipping the sail with the obvious result being I get dragged into the sail as I'm hooked in. Super frustrating, and unfortunately has reinforced the idea that I need to keep myself further from the sail, and hence the reaching for the sail, and/or leaning back - all fatal flaws

    He's sheeting out as he's setting up for the jibe. Needs to sheet in. Counterintuitive for sure because the way to depower when sailing upwind or on a reach is to sheet out (open the sail), but the way to depower when sailing downwind is to sheet in (close the sail). Instead of spilling wind off the leach, you spill wind off the luff. 8:45 not 9:34. Forget about jibing for a while. He should practice sailing downwind and depowering by closing the sail. Until he can do that he won't be able to learn the rest of the motions to complete a jibe.

    Lars also has a big disadvantage due to his gear, comparing to Lukas for example. He’s already fully out of control, fighting the conditions, before even approaching the jibe. With a wide Slalom board, a decent carbon boom, new sail and 90% mast I bet his entire session would be more relaxed.

All material bought based on what had the highest discount could be or obtained used, 30% mast, Alloy Boom, Freeride Sail, wrong board (I was lucky my father jumped in once to buy a board for Fuerte conditions, but found myself trying it at Lake Garda to no success, and Strand Horst, then finally bought a Futura Wood which I still have to this day, best investment ever). 50-100 catapults later I was planing sometimes, but control was never great, in particular when conditions were not perfect (too much wind, chop, too few wind, gusty etc.). Eventually replaced all that stuff with 70-80% masts and decent Freerace or Slalom Sails (and thinking if that was a mistake too, and I should have bought 100% right away).You should consider taking a loan and buy good Slalom material once, even if it hurts :) Or charge Nico higher rates ;)

    Lars is beginning the jibe with all his weight on the left foot, causing the board to be instable creating friction and small jumps on the small chops. Then he can't release the left hand in time because he is already too slow. Personally I switch the feet immediately after I get the boom on new side with both hands, if you mantain enough speed the sail will rotate very easily.

    It is so helpful to see Lars and hear Nico's coaching. As the only windsurfer within a 700km radius of myself, these videos are golden. How heavy is Lars? I am 193cm and 105kg, and it is good to other tall people windsurfing as I often wonder how much difference that makes. Very encouraging, thanks for making these videos. Now all I have to do is wait for the ice to melt off of the lake....

    You didn't say anything about switching the hands, but he did do it in the last session...

    I would like to get the perfect jibe to then try windsurfing with the foil: Oh My God 😳😱😰😅 The catapults are waiting for me!?!

    I think you should give Lars a better wet suit so that he does not have to freeze after every waterfall he makes.😜😜😃👋👋 After all, he is the one who makes the films.

    Lars should avoid looking at his feet but more the trajectory of the jibe.

    My Jibes are far from perfect so I'd better not comment on Lars Jibes- but I still do ;-) It would be easier if he'd take a smaller sail without cambers to learn.

    @@LarsWcmn Oh sorry, I didn't see this. But he still looks overpowered. If you have trouble to control the board going straight, jibing ain't easy.

    looks like Lars Board isnt that Great to jybe. I also had some boards that did not like to jibe. Björn Dunkerbecks Race Jibes are still "Überirdisch".
