Regarding your aunt's comments, I think you're right. It's amazing how many people come around once they realize they know someone who's gay, and they don't have horns. Religious people tend to live in an "echo chamber" and all they hear are the same words coming at them all the time. They aren't well connected to the outside world, especially if they're part of a very insular religious community.
