Your dry humor is definitely funny in parts as well"Dare I say it's lit" 🤣 Overall thankful for you being a part of the filmmaking community alongside , Lewis Potts, A Wandering DP, and Danny Gervitz. Thanks for sharing! I've been wanting to play around with these luts for a while. For now, I've been using the CST To convert my footage to Cineon Film Log because it works well with the Kodak LUTS built into davinci. Gonna have to check these out though, I really the like the results you shared!

I am a bit surprised by how early in the node tree you put the Lut - do you find the end result better when grading ON the Lut like this? (I was taught to grade with Lut towards the end - effectively the same as when adding it as a timeline node)

Thank you for the video. Quick question. When using SLOG3 and Phantom Luts do I need to convert the footage to Rec 709 first and then drop a phantom LUT on or can I just slap one directly onto the SLOG3 footage? Thank you I shoot on Sony A7IV and use Divinci Resolve 18

what if I already have CST setup? (Slog3 to Davinci WG at the starting node ---- Davinci WG to rec709 as the last node?) can I still use phantom luts with this?? and should I put it between these 2 nodes or at the start/end?

  • @felixkuehl496

You could surround the Lut with another CST in and out, so Davinci WG to your Camera LOG -> Phantom Lut for your Camera LOG -> Rec709 to Davinci WG. However I found it best to just replace my CST Out at the end of the pipeline with the Phantom Lut and use that as the Rec.709 conversion and do all my grading before. If you need to stay in Davinci WG instead of the Log space of your footage, you could simply add one CST right before the output LUT

One thing i miss in all these tutorials - what color space/management settings should i use? I hear different suggestions and they all lead to different results. The safest seems to be to have everything at rec709 2.4 but i have a feeling that's "wrong".

Great channel! One tutorial that I have not been able to find anywhere is how to apply a LUT when shooting and expose properly. For example in SLOG3 I will typically need to overexpose 1.5-2 stops, but then this will throw off the look of the LUT so I’m not getting an accurate representation of the final look of the shot when I’m shooting. This obviously makes it difficult to get the visual look I’m after and I’m really just shooting in the dark with my lighting. How do I do this? S tutorial would be great. How to use overlay luts when shooting and expose properly. Not sure if this is just an SLOG thing or if it’s common to overexpose any type of log footage. Thanks

if you have a newer camera that enables you to put the luts inside the camera, just do that and expose with the lut on. most of the times, your image will look great. if you don’t have this option, try to use zebras and a grey card (there are plenty videos on that on youtube). if you wanna go a bit further, try an app called monitor+ where you can import the conversion luts (like phantom luts) to your phone and see the exposure or you can use false colors. there is a lot on youtube about setting the right exposure and i struggled with exposure a lot and now i nail it almost every time. it just needs practice and research what works best for you.

  • @sirnesu

not sure if you’re using the lut on a monitor or if its baked into youre camera, typically using a monitor is easier. for the phantom luts, the creator of the luts says that you dont need to over expose slog3, you can just expose normally
