I am a senior in high school this year and I am committed to play softball at Dartmouth and when I saw that Dartmouth was one your top two schools, I got so excited! Even though you didn’t end up choosing Dartmouth, you can’t go wrong with Stanford haha. I actually live really close to Stanford now and it is a great place to live and a great campus. You’ll definitely enjoy California when you get to come in person!! (:

Everyone thought it was so difficult for seniors last year but this year I can say from experience that it’s so much worse. Nobody has any idea how college admissions is going to work this year and I am so nervous.

Duke ending DukeTip is absolutely CRIMINAL. I did the program the summer before 8th grade (before the pandemic hit and they ended it the summer before 9th grade). The program was absolutely amazing.

notre dame is french (noter daum) is more how it's pronounced, althought theres a hard ending in notre, no american says the hard ending bc it can be tricky to pronounce

I know you had some hesitancy because you weren't able to really see all of the schools, so don't feel afraid to explore your transfer options if you find out Stanford isn't really for you. I would bet with the way things are moving that schools will be open for visits by the spring. I know it might feel weird to transfer, but there are a lot of people that do it and there are likely to be even more this year because so many people were in the same place as you where they couldn't really get to see all of their choices. And you probably wouldn't have many issues with getting into any of your finalists coming from Stanford. I'll make the pitch for Notre Dame in case you do end up reconsidering. We have a relatively large campus, but we try to keep it so that most of the places you go to everyday are within a 15 minute walk. So the residence halls, academic buildings, student life are mostly towards the center of campus and then there is an outer ring with green space (golf course, rec fields, and wooded areas) and the area the with athletics facilities (all the stadiums and practice areas). This helps to create the bubble atmosphere that you like. You can see this on pg. 15 here: facilities.nd.edu/assets/308029/campus_plan_executive_summary_update_2017.pdf Also, most students live on campus, which you said you wanted to do. Students are required to live on campus for their first three years, and then a large amount of seniors decide to stay on too. We have a somewhat unique residence hall system that is most easily explained by just comparing it to the Harry Potter house system. Whatever dorm you are put in, you stay in (though you can switch if you really don't like it, but the vast majority don't). That dorm kind of becomes your family and a part of your identity. Basically the first question any ND alum asks another alum they meet is what dorm they were in. There are traditions, rivalries, cheers, dances, chants, events, etc. all associated with each dorm. We do not have greek life, so the dorm kind of takes that place, except without all of the hazing. Your dorm provides you a kind of community within a community. As for student body size, our undergrad population is a little bit bigger than Stanford, but our grad student population is 1/4 the size. We really try to put more emphasis on undergrad education than other academically comparable schools. One example is that almost all of our classes are taught by professors unlike some other places where you can have TAs teaching the classes. I think there is also an emphasis on getting undergrad science majors involved in research while at other places those research positions are mostly for grad students. I don't know a ton else about research because I wasn't a science major, but I know our administration is trying to build out our research programs more (and I quite literally mean build it, considering they are constructing several new research buildings) and I believe our new Provost is rather respected for her work building out programs at Rice. Oh, and you were saying Notre Dame fine. The name is French, so I guess its technically supposed to be pronounced like Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris (so Notruh Dahm), but most of the other founders and early students were Irish, so they anglicized the name to the way most now pronounce it (Noter Daym). Interestingly, the current university President tends to pronounce it like Notruh Daym, almost taking the first word from French and the second from the anglicized version, but I haven't really heard anyone else say it like that. Actually, you should just watch Rudy even if you aren't considering Notre Dame.

ND is in such a small shit town, super ghetto. The state it’s in should tell you enough about the school
