    I LOVE the wise words you gave at the end of the video. No matter where others go, it does not define their value. That is beyond true and people need to hear that. As someone who went to a community college and a local private university during my undergrad, I understand how getting into ivies may make others feel less than. Now I'm in dental school becoming a doctor even if I didn't go to an ivy league university. Regardless, I am so so happy for you and your amazing acceptances. While it may be good to have MUNs, debates, science and math related stuff, it is important that you show who YOU are. They get thousands of applications with perfect sat scores, grades and academically gifted scholers. But what makes a student stand out is their interests and what sort of qualities they display. From 10th forward, I did more culinary and clay sculpting things with a mix of some English and science (specifically biology) since those are my 2 favorite things to do and 2 favorite subjects. I'm still in high school, but this is the same advice I get from people first hand and online including professionals.

    Yes! I applied as a physics major with an intent to minor in fine arts. I’m not completely sure what career path I want to take, and Brown/Swarthmore are both colleges that would give me plenty of room to explore.

  • @geoffreyk9165

    @geoffreyk9165

    Жыл бұрын

    @@emilyzhang1002, I hear what you’re saying about wanting to explore, but your major is your primary focus (of course) and when you’re majoring in physics, it’s a serious thing. A minor is nice, but in my humble opinion and not that you asked for advance, if you know you’re going to major in physics, you’re not looking for flexibility at that point.

  • @emilyzhang1002

    @emilyzhang1002

    Жыл бұрын

    @@geoffreyk9165 For most of these colleges, you only apply as an intended major, which is really so that incoming freshman can take their first two years to figure out what they want to concentrate in. For example , students at Princeton officially declare their majors at the end of their sophomore year. That being said, while I marked physics as my intended major (because I enjoy it and I think it’s very versatile), that doesn’t mean I do not have flexibility to explore in college. Hope this made sense!

  • @geoffreyk9165

    @geoffreyk9165

    Жыл бұрын

    @@emilyzhang1002, Haha, yes, makes total sense- it was exactly the same for me in terms of indicating an intended major, but I guess I was intent on studying engineering from the beginning so there was no turning back. I always advice students to follow their hearts so if you start off in nuclear physics and after the grind of the first two years you decide it’s not for you, there’s no shame in changing to what you think suits you better. However, do keep in mind that it’s harder to switch from say comparative literature to say chemistry. For that reason, I think your probably better of doing the harder electives at the university better respected for its physics program than taking the flexibility. It’s always easier to go back to something flexibility and, some may argue, less academically challenging later than to ‘move up’ to physics later because the underclassmen maths and sciences requirements for physics will be more challenging than those for arts, which means you can count your harder maths and sciences credits if you change to arts, but can’t if you change from arts to physics. Ultimately, that’s one of the main reasons I always advise to go for the best program that suits your personal life that is the most challenging. Hope that makes sense and good luck with your decision.

    @@emilyzhang1002 I just wanted to congratulate you! That’s pretty impressive and this video has motivated me to continue pushing through high school :)

    It probably feels really important right now at your age to talk about getting into a high ranking college but in the long run it matters very little. The amount of things you have done before college is like trivial compared to what you could be doing in the next 10 years. The game's not even started for you yet.

    You will grow with more confidence and realize how valuable your time is, and you will know you only need to apply 8 schools, maybe?

    It's hilarious that everyone says the same thing: "it does not define you." Okay, thanks for repeating the same thing that everyone else has said.

    A full ride to Vanderbilt, Yale, Princeton etc. I hope normal average high school seniors don't watch reaction videos of students like you, that has to be depressing for them.... How do you get in Princeton and Yale and get waitlisted at Brown and Cornell?? Am I missing something? I always considered Brown and Cornell as the "bottom Ivies".
