I talk all things Classroom Economy in this video. I talk about how to set up your own economy system, the jobs I have, how the salary + payday + fines + auction work, parental involvement, and things I will do differently next year.

I love this and I have used this a couple of times in my classroom at different grades. The only thing I dont agree with is having a class auction...instead try having a class store. It is allowing the kids to browse what their options are and it is more realistic for them, they do it every day with their parents. They know when they cant afford something and makes them want to save more. Like you said, do what works for you and your enviornment. Every situation is different. Thank you for sharing yours! :)

Yes this is a great idea! I actually did that this past school year with my kiddos. I had smaller items they could buy with $1 or $2, and larger items that they had to save up for (like a class movie, or extra recess/park time). It was great!

I've been loving this in my classroom so far this year. I do have some students who have refused to pay rent this month despite having the funds. They claim they have chosen to save their money. They did not partake in the monthly auction and we talked about the implications this would have in the real world. I'm curious if you've come across this with the classroom economy in your classroom at all? Do you just follow the natural consequence of taking away their desk if they continue to not pay each month?

Oh gosh, that's interesting. It's never been an option to not pay. If they choose not to pay then they could get evicted. If I knew they had the money then I would make them pay for the desk rent or evict them from their desk on the spot without the ability to spend their money. lol.

Super informative video. Question about the fines/bonuses. During the week, if a student is fined, what is the process with the police officer since their money is in their "bank" account? Does the student withdrawal money from the bank to pay their fine? Same idea with bonuses, are they taking their bonus to the bank to get money? Do you hand out bonus/fine slips to the student, or do you give it to the bank? How often are students paying their fines/getting bonuses if they have them? Is it every day, or like once a week?

These are great questions! In the beginning I was doing it once a week, but I noticed that it was starting to eat up too much of my instructional time, so instead I changed it to once a month, the same day that we have payday/ rent due/ and the auction, the students also receive their fines and pay them. To make it the most impactful then yes, having to pay the fine immediately would be ideal, but to save class time, I just do it once a month

What happens if kids have money left over at the end of the year?

  • @3peaksclassroom

I’ve never had that happen - usually after kids buy their desk, they spend their money on the items at the auction. But if had students who chose to save up money towards the end of the year I’d fill the parents in and maybe they choose to recognize the savings in some way ☺️

how many items do you auction each month?

  • @3peaksclassroom

It depends on how many I get donated by families but typically I auction between 10 - 15 items. Sometimes less if the Auction is taking too long.
