My Cheap Chevy Tahoe PPV BROKE AGAIN!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This is a continuation of the story of my Chevy Tahoe PPV auction buy. I spent a whole lot of time and money on repairing the engine, doing a Displacement on Demand delete, bigger cam and a bunch of new engine parts. But this time the Tahoe had a catastrophic failure that sent it back to the shop for more repairs. Following along for the next chapter in the story on this truck and why buying a vehicle at an auction is fraught with risk.

The people who are fussing at you are probably making payments on a $50,000 truck that will depreciate faster than they can pay it off. Who cares you’re upside down in it? You got a good truck way cheaper than at a new lot. I say keep driving it!

After already having 9600 invested in a 4k car, not paying the extra 600 to have the seats seems poor logic. After all as u said you did compensate most of the loss selling the 4Runner...

I've always thought about buying one of those police Chargers or Tahoe's. Never done it casue they scare me because ya they may only have 150K on the odometer but they have 3 million idle hours running the AC on all day!

I owned two police Charger. I sold one, though. I put around 40k miles on the current one. No issues other than the regular maintenance. I am in market again to replace my Pacifica with a Tahoe. Here the key point is the maintenance. My Charger has almost 10k engine hours but all the maintenance was done by the dealership right on time. I got all the maintenance records from the PD and keep following the manufacturer’s maintenance schedule.

Eh, you turned that Tahoe into a nice and reliable vehicle, you're never going to get your money back so, imo...I would keep it and use it for what ya bought it for, the family hauler with some exhaust rumble/soul. At this point I would spend the $600 or whatever it is to finish off the interior seating and use it. It's a nice ride, use and enjoy and it should last a long while. good luck

As always, good info in your vids Chris. It's a shame the rear end failed so soon. If the Tahoe fills your needs and you're going to keep it for awhile spend the last $600 on the seats. For $10,000 you have a cool truck with a hopped up/rebuilt engine and rear end and you can haul the whole family. What ever you decide best of luck with it. ~Pat

Recently I bought a 99 Tahoe LS for $5200 CDN just over 200k I'm a big tall guy and I fit in it very good compared to the newer ones.I had a Pioneer stereo installed and put a cubby in where the old cd player was...very handy for cellphone ,pens note pad ect. Replaced most of the front end including new rad and serpentine. It runs well as I am the 3rd owner I found most of the scheduled maintenance was done. I am having the rear quarters replaced and any rust spots repaired and having the area below the style line painted with that truck bed liner. One thing before i bought it I asked for and received the VIN#and then had the vehicle Carfaxed which it cleared ok. I like you bought it to be a daily driver as I'm 70 and I like it and mainly I fit in it so good. One thin that I like about the older Tahoes is that all of the controls are simple to use like shifting into cruise without looking at the gauges. One of the best features that I like is the yellow tinted exterior mirrors so it cuts the glare from the guy behind you with those white lights. Wish it had a rear lift gate but the barn doors work well and the temp gauge and compass in the rear view mirror are awesome as well. I believe if I take care of my vehicle and drive defensively my vehicle will take care of me.

East Coast Classics: Hey man We are over here in LV, Nevada... Seriously not sure if mentioned inthe comments already but it was probably almost 100% the burnout that did it because I've gone through three of those posi Limited Slips (G80) in my Trailblazer and weve done another four(4) of them in various fullsize tahoes, silverados etc from the nineties on up and they just break. I switched to an open diff(one leg) and never had a problem again. Burn all the tires u want lol. Anyways like I said not sure if this helps but had to chip in on this one cuz I feel your pain...Boy do i.

Hey brotha, as usual, thanks so much for joining in! I'm not entirely burned by this Tahoe and I'm still gonna go to the auctions. I just need to be smarter about what I'm doing and what I'm buying AND with estimating repairs and resale. I'm not trying to flip cars for profit but I also don't want to be upside down either. Regular Tahoe's don't attract me the way the police version does. There's something about how purposeful these PPV's are that I like. Problem is only three Tahoe PPV's have come through the Delaware auctions over the past couple years so it's slim-pickings! Thanks. -Chris

No surprise the rear went out. The GM 10-bolt rear is trash. I had a 95 Firebird and it was known at the time that if you took a stock 4th Gen F-Body to the track, there was a good chance the rear would blow when you hit the throttle. Even more so with a truck. When looking to buy a used GM vehicle with one, just assume that the rear needs to be rebuilt, and with a better dif than stock.

I dont see a loss .I think the investment is well worth it . These trucks run forever. I have a 2002 tahoe I purchased in 2004 with 26 thousand miles today this truck has 347k miles and cranks up beautiful, sure I have done head gaskets. Water pump alternator front lower and upper control arms tie rods and ends , new shocks and now I am considering buying a crate remanufactured engine to put in it and a new paint job. no payments is always better than a 50 60 thousand loan .

The rear A/C on these Tahoe's is flippin frigid. In fact my kiddos turn the vents off after being back there for a while cause the air blows cold and right on them. I would think your doggos would have no problem staying comfortable back there.

Thanks man. Same with this generation of Tahoe too. There are bolts and brackets for the third row to clinch into. I've gotten those brackets already from eBay and now just waiting for the right seats to show up for sale. Oh, by the way, those brackets and seats are different between the generations of Tahoe which helps make this more difficult and pricey too.

Hey guys, do you know if the new 2015--2019 tahoe is wortth considering? I live in the middle east and in need of a truck to haul the fam. I 've been considering the landcruisers, nissan patrol and the tahoe, with the latter being the least popular amongst the 3. Landcruisers and patrols are kinda expensive and have a strong resale value over here. I've had a chevy silverado 2011 for 8 years now without any major issues (other tthan the fuel pump leaking due to heat deteriorating the plastic/lifter knock). mechanics have been telling me that the new tahoe's have been modified in terms of fuel injection which has been leading to carbon build up yaddayaddaya, advising me to say away. Regular weather temperature over here is somewhere between 80-122 degrees.

I live in Sussex County, Delaware and heard that the next state auction is coming up soon. Although I am probably too risk averse to buy one of these vehicles, I would love to see one in person. When is the next auction and how do I learn more about it? Is there a website with information about the vehicles that will be offered at the auction?

Check out USgovBid, which is where the State of DE posts their auctions. There isn't any State auctions now but this is where you'll find the time, date, and listing of what's being sold.

3200 dollars is a huge steal. Even with engine repair and all it's still a sub-10K bargain. I bought my first 2008 PPV in 2012. It's still in my stable along with two others.

That 'why not' part of your comment is exactly what got me spending too much on this Tahoe. For the cam and tune, I used Texas Speed and Performance. Their prices are comparable to the other speed shops and I mailed my PCM and they tuned it at their shop too. Worked out really well.

I have about $2000 invested in a $500 car. I paid a grand in 2014 and threw a grand in it on parts. I have driven 80.000 miles so far in it though so it wasn't a total rip off. It runs fine.
