My Bullet Journal Collection in My Hobonichi Cousin

In this video, I talk about how I use the daily section in my Hobonichi Cousin for my bullet journal collection. There are five types of spreads in my bullet journal collection: lists, notes, brain dumps/journaling pages, planning/planner-related stuff, and record keeping. As always, please feel free to use the timestamps below to skip ahead):
1. Lists (1:05)
2. Notes (2:33)
3. Brain dump / Journaling (5:26)
4. Planning & planner related stuff (8:07)
5. Record keeping (13:58)

I have learned something from every video of yours that I've watched. This one was especially helpful and I want to thank you for all the time you put into these videos! I have been rethinking my journaling practices for 2019 and seriously considering a Hobonichi for bullet journaling but couldn't see how to manage collections. Now I see how it could work, even for my trackers. Also, I scanned the comments looking to see whether someone else had already asked you about the pens you use. I see someone did, and that you have even been able to use a fountain pen! I've gotten used to 68 gsm Tomoe River Paper in undated notebooks produced by Taroko Design. I was convinced I would not be able to tolerate the ghosting on the thinner Hobonichi paper. Your pages seem to show a very acceptable level of ghosting, though, so that's another reason to thank you for the opportunity to see them! Onward now, to watch and bookmark the Weeks and the "outdated A6" videos!

Great video as usual. And I love the idea of an accomplishment page and the review. I think the review would be especially useful for my work Hobonichi... like a weekly wrap up. Thanks for the inspiration.

Hm... I find that a review can be useful but can also get a bit mechanical if I do it every week. Kinda like writing for the sake of writing, and not really for self-reflection? Let me know how it goes for you! =)

Hi! The type of pens I used in the Hobonichi changed over the months. Initially, I was using the uniball jetstream pen that came with the hobonichi purchase (that's the one that I used for my grocery list). Then I switched to Staedtler triplus fineliner (that's the one I used in the career planning page). And finally, I currently use a Pilot Metropolitan fountain pen with a Pilot Kakuno fine nib, with the Noodler's Heart of Darkness ink (that's the one that I used for the skills audit, goals, accomplishment pages, etc). Hope that helps! =)

Quick question: If you're using the daily and monthly pages this way, therefore the "days" and "month view" labelling doesn't really matter (because your things are not tied to specific days, they are just lists, notes etc). Thus, why don't you just buy a regular squared notebook of a similar size?

  • @yukikosakamura6498

    @yukikosakamura6498

Hello! Ah, I actually do use the month on two pages in the Hobonichi to keep my appointments. But most importantly, I use the week on two pages (the weekly layout) for my day-to-day planning. The daily pages have dates in them that I use like page numbers to index what I've written. So altogether, I think the Hobonichi is better for my needs than a regular notebook. Before I used the Hobonichi, I was using a regular dot-grid notebook for bullet journaling and then I got lazy and didn't feel like drawing the monthly and weekly layouts.. =P

but besides the numbered pages (useful for indexing) ...it is not a bullet journal :) You don't use (and/or need) bullets :)

Hi! Thanks for your comment! I'm so sorry but I do not understand what you mean by that this is not a bullet journal... A collection is one of the modules in a bullet journaling system, so I'm not sure what you mean by that... Perhaps you could elaborate on what you mean by that I do not use bullets? I do use "bullets" (although they are more like boxes instead of bullets) in my weekly layout, which is the main part of my planner... I also use the arrow signs to migrate tasks forward... Or did you mean using specific signifiers? I'm so sorry, I re-read your comment several times but I couldn't really understand what you meant... It'd be great if you could clarify so I can respond to it =) Thank you!

You are right, collections are PART OF the bullet journal system but not all... I meant that the system call for bullet points to signify things and a mix-and-match of things jotted down in your notebook...you are not using any of these, since you don't use this method as a planning system. you are using (sort of) a master bullet journal which is a notebook where you make lists of things you don't wanna copy over and over in your bullet journal (such as birthdays-same every year- grocery list, items to purchase and so on...

  • @yukikosakamura6498

Ah. Perhaps I didn't make it clear in this video. This video only describes the collections section of my entire planning system. The overview of my full planning system is in this video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/q36Mua6rda3eiNo.html. I agree that even in my overall planning system, I don't follow the traditional bullet journal rapid logging using signifiers, as laid out by Ryder Carroll. That is because I find that signifiers are not enough to make information stand out for me. I need to put things into their sections to make the information distinct. Thus, I have a section for schedules (events), a section for tasks (to-do list with check boxes) and finally, a section for notes (which I indent in the to-do list section to make it stand out more). Sometimes, I also write my notes in the collections part of the bullet journal. Because rapid logging means to log things down quickly, I still consider myself as rapid logging. The difference is that I write down the information in the respective sections. I hope that clarifies my thinking process =)

Hi Ghosties Creative! Thanks for watching! Yep, that's right, I just write on the next pages without thinking about the dates. To me, these daily pages are just like pages in a notebook. The dates serve as page numbers so I can index what I wrote on these pages.

Thank you for your videos! I love it! I just have a quick question please? I'm learning Japanese language and I really love that I can learn new words from the beautiful quotes on Hobonichi. My question is: how do you write Japanese on Hobonichi grid? Do you write characters with one square tall or two squares tall? I'm quite confused because most of the time I still need to write the ふりがな and I don't know how to make it look good. Do you have any tips on this? Thank you.

HI! Thanks for your question! I confess that I don't write Japanese in my Hobonichi because that is not my main language for thinking. My Japanese proficiency is worse than an elementary student's to be honest! But if I were to write kanji or furigana, I would write a little bit larger than one row (i.e., a little bit larger than one square tall) and then leave the next row blank. This helps it look less crowded but at the same time doesn't make the words look out of proportion. Let me know if that works for you?

Yukiko Sakamura I think he got bored in the middle of the meeting and just mindlessly reaching out to my notebook then opened it... I was shocked but as nothing personal written there I just let it be. I noticed he often got distracted like this so I am more careful now (like keeping my notebook further away from him in meetings) Are you using Hobonichi also for the personal one?
