Reminds me of me and my Korean Ex....my welsh best friend was his "fiancée" and I was his roommate that we lived in one bedroom and the sister lived in the other bedroom for 3 years then we moved out to our own place. His brothers kids and his other sister kid all called me their "American uncle". His mom used to make me my favorite kimchi and sent me all kinds of fresh produce from their southern province. It was amazing how "they didn't seem to have a clue".
