My BMW N54 Is Broken And This Is What Broke | E90 Oil Pan Gasket DIY

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this video I continue to tear down my N54 to find out exactly what happened.
This will be part two of my timing chain, oil pan gasket and rod bearing DIY.
This video shows you what is involved with doing an oil pan gasket on an E90 or E92 BMW.
I drop the subframe and take a look at the chains and guides that failed.
In the next video we will pull the oil pump out and look at the rod bearings.
Here is the thorough video I made on removing the subframe:

Finally. The missing piece to dropping the oil pan is shown. Removal of the power steering pump. I'm doing my turbo swap out and decided to change my OPG while I'm there. Didn't want to tackle the PS pump and serpentine belt without seeing it done first. I couldn't find one oil pan removal video on youtube which actually shows it as part of the oil OPG removal. Not one. Was such a shame that your previous oil pan gasket replacement video was a guide rather than a how to do it, long after you had changed yours. I know that out of everyone, you would have covered it off. Anyway it's there now :). Thanks VDIY.

Almost forgot myself. Like everyone else I'm sorry it happened too. But amazed that unlike a lot of us mere mortals whom would have given up when it comes to the engine internals you dive right in and set about chasing down and fixing the issue with a 'second nature' confidence, giving us further insite to what can be achievable if you set your mind to it and subscribe to this channel. Good luck VDIY. I certainly hope it doesn't end here.

Got 2 335i with 75k miles on then. I drive my manual pretty hard. I try and stick to around 3k mile oil changes. But I must admit I would not be too disappointed if I'd hit 200k with either of mine. But especially the manual with the pure turbos. Doesnt sound like something avoidable... not exactly a maintenance item per se. Good luck and hope no permanent damage to the bottom end!

My N54 135i Engine was a goner. My oil filter had golden metal shavings and chunks. After disassembling my engine found the Crankshaft rod bearing on piston 4 was heavily scratched up. I was able to rebuild my engine which I had to put a new crankshaft (expensive) plus finding the correct crankshaft bearings wasn’t fun. My rebuilt engine still running great currently put 12k miles.

This had me watching with bated breath So glad the oil looks not horrible and the filter likely caught the little bits... I assume you're going to replace the oil pump too as a precaution after pumping some particles through the filter. Still fingers crossed the bearings are totes ok and it'll be running in no time. Very much makes me certain in the 150k - 200k range depending on excited high rpm driving, to replace all these guides at a minimum, chains maybe if it's not to costly. I wonder if the oil pump is good for 200k on avg. or at 200k, an external dry sump system to replace the oem pump maybe.. Great vid, and details. I look forward to seeing more of the crank/rods/bearings/pump underside to see how it looks there. I have hope you caught it before anything got past the filter and to the bearings.

Love your videos, great inspiration. I'm here today asking your guidance - if you dont mind shooting your honest opinion. Got a n54 7 years back, lots of bad things happened in my life. The car was always fantastic -long story short. Barely ever drove it (188000-225000) car was fine, was scared of several known issues especially those involving leaks and OFHG, VCG, OPG, belt, main seal. So I had them done at a local shop, the next day, Did a little pull, my crank hub bolt backed out. I don't have to explain to you what happens then. Is there a possibility that everything may not be damaged internally and just the timing is off, I'm not sure if I understand that concept. not to write any sob story or make anyone feel uncomfortable ---- slowly getting out of my ballpark for terms of cost recently diagnosed with an illness thatll likely take my life soon and without warning. the passion for the vehicle is one of my only inspirations left honestly, shall i just move on? & Much love to everyone and stay safe.

Do you think the cause of the damage was due to hpfp overdrive set up. It is possible that the overdrive kit put stress on the chain and guides and wore those parts out. You shut the motor down when you received the warning so the bottom end should be fine. Worst case you will have to polish the crank and put a new set of bearings and oil pump and chain etc. Keep up the excellent content.

What is your plan if the bearings are shot? I just finished replacing my N54 after the bearings got chewed up. It was cheaper for me to get a low mileage junkyard engine than to buy new bearing shells and a crankshaft. Plus it's a lot less nerve wracking to swap a motor than to mess around with internals, at least in my opinion. Really sorry you're having to go through this but I feel your pain man. Looking forward to your videos on the topic, as always your videos prove that you are the king of all things N54. Cheers!

Yeah I wouldn't worry too much unless you're going for over 500 WHP. From what I can tell the oil doesn't have any fine metal shavings in it. The filter seems to have done a good job of stopping all the shavings from the sprocket on the crankshaft that drives the oil pump. I'm thinkin a good confirmation will be when I pull the vanos solenoids and the filters on the side of the block. If they are still fine then nothing made it's way into the rest of the engine. I'm going to put some cheap oil in and just run the car for a few minutes and drain and change the filter. To give the motor a good flush.

At 200k miles the rod bearings may show some sign of wear, but the chances of them getting totally destroyed and produce that much of observable material are very slim. It usually takes much more that a few seconds of low oil pressure under no load to get to the point of them being "destroyed".

  • @VehicularDIY

    @VehicularDIY

Yeah I'm kind of expecting them to look okay still but just worried how effective the oil filter will have been in stopping all the particles form getting into the head/vanos etc. I'm going to pull the check valves on the side of the block to see how the screens look. If they look clean that will offer some piece of mind.
