My big mistake? Only spending the day here! Budapest, Hungary: one of Europe's great cities.
Today I arrive in Budapest at the start of my journey east which will eventually take me to Chisinau Moldova. But I had a few hours here to try and tire myself out before the overnight train. Join me on a quick run round a city that clearly deserved more time!
Hi, I’m Steve, a travel reviewer from Scotland. Join me on my adventures as I discover my own country, often visiting places for the first time, so hopefully it's as much of an eye-opener for you as it is for me! Don't expect expert opinion, just a very honest journey of discovery. Sometimes featuring my intrepid sidekick Alicja, sometimes featuring adventures beyond the borders of Scotland. Enjoy!

@@steve-marsh you know why Moldova exists? Because in Romania there's a 5.5% Hungarian MINORITY whose party has 18% of the government (such a discrimination!😂). If Moldova,, with 82% of inhabitants of Romanian ethnicity, ever reunites with Romania, then the Hungarian party in Romania drops under the 5% threshold and so loses their lucrative and influential positions in the government! So they oppose with every tool they have, perpetuating the effects of the Ribbentrop-Molotov pact 😢

We visited for the first time last summer anbd absolutely loved it. Beautiful city and the food was a surprise - fantastic.
I've been to (only?) 16 countries in the world, but Budapest really touched my heart so much. I didn't expect to experience this much of a beauty. I've become a great fan of Hungary and I am proudly weaingr my souvenir t-shirts, one of them featuring the legendary yellowish tram. Love from Poland to all Hungarian folks ♥
I am from Scotland but actually live in Budapest and it's a great city to live in with an impressive public transport system to get quickly from a to b frequently. The cost of living here is much lower than in the UK and at present Hungary has got the highest food inflation in Europe, so it's quite expensive for the locals who earn far lower wages than in the UK. I enjoyed your video and would urge you to come back and see much more of this beautiful city.

Thanks Robert! Yeah, I'm always careful saying somewhere is 'cheap' realising it might not be that way for locals earning in local currency. The abundance of food though was incredible compared to back home. But aye, I didn't even scratch the surface of this wonderful place, although I was happy to be able to just wander around, for some reason I'd expected it to be a sprawling city!

It might be interesting (since you are from Scotland) to mention that at 13:13 when on the bus crossing on the Széchenyi Chain Bridge, you can hear the announcement "The next stop is: Clark Ádám tér (square)" - "Adam Clark (Hungarian: Clark Ádám; 14 August 1811 - 23 June 1866) was a Scottish civil engineer who is best known for his career in Hungary. His most famous work is the Széchenyi Chain Bridge over the Danube River in Budapest, which was one of the longest bridges in the world when it opened." I've lived in Budapest for over 7 years. It is a safe and amazing city with beautiful architecture. I love that it is walkable and has great public transport so I don't need a car.
I was born in Budapest and still live here, but the difference between the 2 lions in the castle is new to me as well. There are similar old markets in every inner district, they are also very beautiful, but they are smaller and tourists cannot find them because they are in hidden places.

Lovely video, I went to Budapest for a week (the year of Eyjafjallajökull, the train home was absolutely packed with stranded air passengers), and have been back a few times, it's a gorgeous city. Some tips for a next time: the trams are much fun, especially rack line 60 up to the Children's Railway (which is exactly what it sounds like), metro line 1 is the oldest on the European continent, the main stations Nyugati and Keleti are some of the most beautiful European terminus stations IMO, the restaurant boat Vén Hajó in your video is a good place to eat (at least it was so many years ago, a bit touristy perhaps, but great food and a lovely spot), Margitsziget is great in Summer, as are the old bath houses. And of course, you should really visit one of the grand coffee houses, Gerbeaud, Central and New York are probably the most famous ones, but there are many other who do justice to the great Habsburgian coffee house tradition.

@@barvdw You know, Budapest was made for a much bigger country, mainly in the end of 19th siecle, in the Golden Age of Hungary. Pozsony (Bratislava), Nagyvárad (Oradea), Kolozsvár (Cluj), Kassa (Kosice), Temesvár (Timisoara), Újvidék (Novi Sad), were almost similar big cities which were cut by the new borders after WW1. Budapest often called the "Water Head" of the country. But it is history now, life goes on.
