I completely relate to not wanting to do something selfish but as a 25 year old I’m proud to say I play on going to Tokyo next year for 3 months on a solo trip just because I want to. I’m currently trying to learn the language so I can truly engage with the locals and your videos/message is a large reason for why I’m taking the leap so thank youn

I take long-weekend getaways solo more and more (4-5 days), and I think it's amazing. For years, I missed out on plans and destinations because I tried to gather people and organize everything, and there came a point where I said "screw it, I have the money and I want to go, with or without you". I think a lot of people have this issue of feeling selfish and being kind of afraid to go where you don't have others with you, but the thing is, if you wait for others, the opportunity will go. There are destinations that are worth to share with someone, but others are better to go to as soon as YOU want to go. If you wait for others to accompany you, you will regret it, at least that's my experience. And as a hobby photographer, I also love being free to shoot at the same scene for 30 minutes. When I'm with others, I always feel like I'm holding them up with my pursuit for the perfect shot - travelling solo, I am untethered. :)

I went to Ghana and South Africa last month solo just because I wanted to getaway for my birthday. I feel like solo travel is a form of self love because for the entire trip I’m doing all the things I want and attending to my own needs. I was reminded of all the things I love about myself that can sometimes get lost in group environments.

You know what I've noticed in silence, the best place to start is gratitude. If I don't, I think my mind drifts to judgement or things I need to. It's so beautiful to embrace the novelness of where I am and surrender to how beautiful it is to just exist and be. All the creative and happy thoughts flow after.

when I was around 16, I firmly told my family that I want to study abroad. I worked hard to get admitted to a university in the Netherlands but my family didn’t give permission to move halfway across the world (because I’m a girl? idk). But they did allow me to study in a different city. It surely didn’t feel like solo travel back then, but I’m forever grateful to have left my hometown & explored a new city on my own. It’s been almost 15yrs since then, finally in the Netherlands building my career, while still travelling solo every now & then. The only downside is that now I feel a bit awkward to travel with people 😅

When I moved to a different state with barely any friends and having to study hard to get into nursing school. I spent a good 10 years doing so many things alone/solo. I realized that I couldn’t rely on the friends I barely had to want to do things. So I started going alone. And then something sparked in me. I realized being alone is so much better for me many times. Bye use I can dictate all my time. No one to have to agree to placed etc. I could eat what I want, walk around the mall for as long as I want. Stop anywhere I want etc

This gave me the solo travel bug! Being in a relationship where we travel together its hard to think of myself solo traveling again, but this inspired an idea that maybe we can both solo travel at the same time (a weekend) and keep journals throughout and share our unique experience w one another afterwards.

Here's my tricks! Get on travel forums before you go! I've made travel friends that way. Ask people what they're eating or drinking and if they like it. Go on walking tours and ask them to take your photo. Comment on all the stairs you're climbing to get to the view at the top. Like, I hope this is worth it!!! Then if there's good vibes ask them to take your photo. Talk to bartenders so other people know you want to talk. I could go on and on

Damn, i also decided to travel around 25/26 and i also see it being really significant as my first purely “selfish” decision. It makes me emotional thinking about it because I just passed my one year anniversary since i left the US and started solo traveling….and while I originally thought i’d just do it for a few months, I never actually went back to my old life. I now live in Belgrade, have met the most incredible people, continue to travel, learn languages, seek out new experiences, and overall i just feel like a completely different person ☺️

I come back to this channel every few months and leave feeling inspired, every time, without fail. This is the sort of stuff that fuels me and makes me so excited about the future. I had my first solo travel experience at 19 to work as a nanny in the center of Rome. In between that time, I had moved to Alaska, a place in which I knew nothing about and knew no one else. In both of these experiences, I thrived and grew immeasurably. I can’t stress the importance of travel/solo travel and getting to know yourself. Getting out of your bubble and going to see the beauty the world has to offer makes a person blossom and grow like nothing else. Each experience has the potential to unravel a part of yourself that you may have never known existed. Big fan, Jo! Thanks for doing what you’re doing.

Did a solo trip to Belgium last spring and stayed in a hostel with other girls my age and it was such a life-changing three days! Though I love my friends, it really does feel good to not have anyone around to persuade you to go, do, or see anything other than what *you* want. I totally agree with you about operating at a high frequency spiritually. If you figure out the science of it, please make another video. The more I think about it, the more I feel it has to be quantifiable, and we just haven’t figured out how to measure it yet. But everything you described - being open and kind and at peace with your solitude - it really does bring people to you. The Law of Attraction, maybe? I’m not a scientist. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I got to see your video only now, but everything you said totally matches what I've experienced so far!! People who don't travel solo or do experiences on their own really struggle to understand how it feels like to do it. I had friends telling me they could never do it, but they simply didn't want to leave their comfort zones.. I actually didn't travel solo, but I've done a bunch of study or volunteer abroad experiences in different countries (two of them lasted almost a year), and living there made me experience all that you said. Anyway, great tips, thank you Joe! 🤗

Just solo travelled in Belgium and while I did stick to my phone a tad much (kept forgetting my book back at the hostel), I had so much fun just speaking Dutch with the locals and talking to new people. The spontaneous decisions (riding the coastal tram around Blankenberge and Oostende) and the self-made challenges (biking from Brugge to Sluis and back) all made for wonderful and reflective memories, as well as a sense of accomplishment. I met some amazing people, saw some old friends, and can't wait to go back someday and keep having my own adventures. Even made some nightlife friends that felt more real since I met them while we were all tired and done dancing at a table outside.

Great advice! As for what you said about postcarding, that hit home with me. I love sending my friends and family postcards of all the places I've been to! As for hotels, I will leave a small piece of advice read the reviews about a hotel beforehand so you can know what you are getting into.

Traveling alone is what brought me some of the best friends I have, and I have to say none are American. I’m Puerto Rican from California and have never met more gracious and loyal people than I have in my friends abroad. There are wonderful people everywhere, OF COURSE, but it’s unfortunate it has happened this way. The community I crave and relate to isn’t here anymore. I do have a super blessed life and beautiful home, but there isn’t any consistency with people here. 😞 Language tripes are the best! Love this and love your channel! Love your whole journey from Brazil to the present! 🥰😇🙏🙏🙏

loved the episode! I was kind of discouraged from solo traveling after going to london on my own for three days and honestly not enjoying it at all. I felt bored and drained and insecure - but also didn’t do the right activities I guess. I really want to do a weeklong hiking trip and since none of my friends seem to have time guess I’m gonna go for it by myself!

Great tips! I can agree with all of them (except I’ve never done the dating app part). I took my first solo trip 7 years ago to Barbados & just did my second solo trip to Arizona last week & had the most amazing/aligned time!

What a great video with some really good tips. After having a difficult year just before the Pandemic, losing a family member, losing the place I had lived in for many years but the one positive was it was a BIG Birthday for me so I decided to take my first solo holiday which was a Well being Holiday in Maderia.I did Yoga for the first time and had a fantastic time.Beautiful place. Just recently I did a solo day in London because I live in London but felt I take it for granted. So did a few tourist things like visiting,Tate Modern. I recommend it Jo.

This was so satisfying, Jo, thank you again! I can't wait for my next solo-trip now as I save funds & energy... they truly are needed, rewaring experiences + I needed a couple of these tips/reminders to live it up to the fullest! I've also racked up personal habits over the years of when having the privledge of studying abroad, but it can be so easier said than done + just a rollercoaster of experiences~ ALSOOOO---**Congrats** simply for applying to film school out there, I hope you get in and/or still continue to master your craft in any way you can, wherever you can. +I'd love to do film/artistry with you in the future as well of course (!) We will be journaling/manifesting in the meantime ;-) Peace n love from NYC to London // Whereva you may be now ~
