I love filling a page with mini sketches. I will use my Platinum Carbon Black ink and mark out a variety of squares and rectangles (and occasionally a circle) and fill a page on a large sketchbook. I leave it open on my desk. Waiting for the water to boil for pasta? I have time to do a 2" x 2" mini sketch. 30 minutes for the chicken to roast? Time to do a few little sketches. This is one of my favourite ways to sketch. I don't stay inside the lines...sometimes a sketch will cross two or more boxes. The end effect is very pleasing.
Grid journaling - for urban sketchers! I enjoy grid journaling in acrylics/collage. Def going to try this. Your sketches turned out so well - always love a good masking tape reveal! Lovely area you took us to. BTW, thanks to your mention of it in a previous vid, I've just joined the local chapter of my city's Urban Sketchers. I haven't joined anything in Years!
Great idea. A friend passed away recently, she left me her watercolours and art supplies, there is a box of Neocolour 2 which I haven't played with yet. Good to see how they work.

Glad you enjoyed it!
Brilliant idea, thanks for sharing. I’ve got these crayons for my birthday and never thought about using them on a sketchwalk. I love the idea with the mini scenes. It takes so much pressure out of the whole attempt.
Toby..there is certain spirit in you...which is playful, childlike ....lovely...its freeing to see your videos. thanks
This is very exciting and inspiring. I really am attracted to the page of thumbnail sketches. Thank you.
Casual viewer to your channel. The *Small frames one page* and then filled with _several individual illustrations_ are *fabulous* Keep sharing Stay happy (everyone)

Wonderful!
Lovely video Toby! Might try this next time I'm out urban sketching. I still need to lighten up (mentally, not tonally😅) and this looks promising...
I loved the organization of the page with the small paintings

Thanks 🙏🙏
Oh no! I have just purchased watercolour pencils and said to myself "no more new materials for a few months"!!! These crayons look fantastic! They might be my next "treat".🤫 Brilliant idea, Toby!! Relueved to know that I'm not the only person who has the occasiinal mishap when peeling off masking tape!!
I love this idea. What a fun way to travel journal. Adding small scenes from each adventure. Thank you for sharing your day with us. Tip: the oil/water crayons can be pricey when you buy the set. But I found that the store Dick Blicks) had assorted broken crayons for a huge discount in small bin. They still work just as good and building a set this way can be a lot more affordable.
I enjoyed this sketching walkabout, Toby. The final result looks great! I've never worked with watercolour crayons but used to do all my sketching plein air with a water brush back in the day. The small size is less daunting for sure.
Love those little thumbnail sketches. I got a small set of those crayons last birthday. Not had much chance to use them yet but impressed with how much pigment they have and hw vibrant they are. Hoping to use them with watercolours for summer postcards this year.
I looove these micro sketches! I always loved small sketches - and found myself being quite alone with this preference. Digging out my neocolor II to play with them in my sketchbook.
12:07 love that sketch!
Great idea for a day out! You can use a hairdryer to get the tape off.

Loved the water soluble crayons...am totally going to pick some up!
You're the tops Toby 😊
These crayons have been one of my absolute favorites for many years. Love to see the work you did with them. Beautiful!
I love this Toby. The crayons look really interesting and I can’t wait to get some to try.
So cool
Great idea!!
I ordered the same neocolour II set last week, its due to arrive tomorrow! A few artists ive seen use them and ive felt inspired. Good timing on your part to add to the inspo!
I really like this idea. I am definitely going to give it a go . Great stuff Toby
I really enjoyed this video and it's inspired me. I find that in a morning or afternoon of urban sketching I start out to do a small, simple sketch and end up spending a couple of hours on one of a more complex scene. I'll definitely give this idea a go. Thanks Toby.
What an inspiration. Thanks for the idea - I love your relaxed attitude and your eye for simple subjects.
That looks like a fresh new idea for urban sketching. These are all inspiring for me. Thank you for tips on using my water soluable pastels.

You are so welcome!
Love this idea, must give this a go! And the crayons seem like great fun lovely lively colours, I wonder if my family might consider these for a father's day present 😅
Once again you’ve inspired me, Toby! 🎨 I’ll crack open my Neocolor IIs and try out this grid pattern. If you and your lovely wife have any plans to visit California in the future, I’d be honored to have you join the L.A. or North Orange County group for an urban sketching trip 😀
Wow! Great Idea! This was very inspiring. I have the neocolor II for a while now. I love to use them. I am going to try a sketchwalk with mini scenes. I liked the video.
Oh, I love the way you've divided up your paper. I'm going to try this. It seems much less overwhelming. Thank you for the inspiration, Toby
Love this for urban sketching. Its new and different looks like fun to .thanks for all you
This is brilliant and fun! Thanks toby 😃
That was fun to watch... I think I'm gonna try this too. Thanx❤
I love how you used your tape as a test strip and brush cleaner! I missed your splatters though!
I love this sketching method, and I am absolutely going on one of these walks soon! I have been using Neocolor ii for years, and they are now tiny stumps spread across home and studio spaces. I really love them! If you warm them up with a hair dryer they go on super thick, if you need a thick line on i.e. a mixed media piece. Just make sure to seal it after :) Thank you for this wonderful video!
Great ideas ... fun times 👌 The blue 😊. Caran D'Ache Cobalt Blue. I actually take the 10 set with my WC pallet. It's small & skinny. The C-Blue is gorgeous, bright, & dissolves great ... well all of them do.
Really enjoyed the scenery in your walk, ( perhaps the sunshine helped ), the little pictures turned out well! Thanks
Lovely!
Love this!
I love this idea! The finished page looks really good! Thank you for sharing this!
Good idea. I'll try it.

what a great idea thanks toby
How delightful! That was fun watching and I would love to do that with you. I can’t 😢 but I can do it by myself in my little town. 😁
Great to see you in our home town Toby! Lovely idea & end result was really good
Fun to watch and explore with you. I've done very little sketching but need to start doing again. New subscriber and I will definitely try this.

Very informative. But could I make a request? Unless I’ve missed it, could you do a tutorial on how to effectively make a loose watercolor scene with both sky and water? Do you have any tips on how to differentiate between a definitive sky and water, and how to make them both clearly different from each other?

Nice thumbnails, I think watercolours would be better than C/D crayons.

Theres a reason why everyone uses watercolours - they are fantastic. Still, fun to experiment.
what pastels are these? water soluble?

Yup! Neocolours
Any exercises to work on the 'kinda loose, but not too loose that it turns into pasta and not in a good way' kinda thing? Also, I had an idea, maybe commentors could help , im new to doing some style of sketchs, I recently got into that 'Urban Style' sketching or whatever its called. my Idea for a series of sketchs was 'Views from a Bottleshop' and I only draw what I can see from my work. I have cool old buildings near by, a bus stop. But I cant get the style down. Thoughts on trying to do bodies, I need help doin a single human standing beside the bus stop.
