My Belfast Falls Road Milltown Cemetery Walk Round

Over the years I have videoed walk rounds of most of our Belfast cemeteries and also many more graveyards outside the city. The other day I realized that I had never filmed a video walk round of Milltown Cemetery on the busy Falls road.
So here it is, my latest cemetery walk round video to rectify my error.

Hi DC. Thanks for that. One of reasons I do these walk rounds is to show far away folks all these remembered places. Yes that is a good way of putting it. I too love this wee pace.....warts and all! Best wishes from the Belfast Castlereagh hills.

Very brave Tom but also a fair disclosure and fantastic walkabout of somewhere that many would feel extremely uncomfortable. Appreciate this share!

Yes POAIP. I hear what you are saying. I was very careful about what I said and where I went. I stuck rigidly to the documentative style. Milltown is largely known for its Republican associations but as I found, there is so much more to it. I love the hidden history and unknown factor you always stumble across in any graveyard. Best wishes from the Belfast Castlereagh hills.

Hello Tom , another gem that would be a very interesting to go around , reminds of Glassnevin they are both so big you almost need a guide to show to you , I am learning so much about the city of Belfast through your videos . The Cramseys mausoleum was interesting there is a big old estate just outside of Ballymoney called O'Harabrook owned by the Cramsey family . Thanks Tom .

I think Winifred Carneys grave is up those stairs to the left, where you are at the end Tom. Yeah Milltown is a big cemetery. Everytime I walk through it I spot a familiar name on the headstones...

Yes I spotted quite a few known names, even on my short visit. Thanks for letting me know about Winifred Carney. I would never have found her on my own. Best wishes from the Belfast Castlereagh hills.

Well Tom what can one say about this unbelievable cemetery? It's one of the biggest I've ever seen, I dare say that you will be having a revisit at sometime? what amazes me about these places is the large moments that people erect in memory of there loved ones, no expense spared because they won't have been cheap, another great video Tom. By the way it's looking like another Scotland visit is on the books so I'll hopefully get another chance at videoing St Andrews Tower Cemetery at Peebles.

Hi chris. I reckon most of those larger headstones etc seen on the way in were erected to bishops and top priests etc. But large monuments etc was the order of the day for rich folk back in the day. There was an idea that if you were wealthy this was one of the ways to display it. Thanks as always for the encouragement Chris! Always appreciated!!! Yes a Peebles video would be very welcome but what about yourself?

I often wonder if those republican and loyalist terrorists that caused so much hurt and suffering to the other communities and their own had simply stopped and thought about what they were going to do. How many would have had second thoughts and stayed in and watched television or gone for a quiet pint, instead of picking up a gun or a bomb and heading out to cause mayhem. So much unnecessary suffering and for what?

That's just it CP. They didn't think. They had never met anyone from the other side to find out that they were just like them with mums and dads and brothers and sisters. They were conditioned not to think by all the angry propaganda they were fed from birth. Even when some of them did start thinking they often were in too deep to get out. If they did voice doubts it would be viewed with suspicion by their comrades and they might have been found in a ditch. It was was also only decades later for some of them that the penny dropped and conscience kicked in. Many had developed so far as to have no consciences or consciences that were warped beyond restoration so that all the horror killing somehow was justified. This is what SF preach today. 'We didn't like doing what we did but it was the only way to get what we wanted' -the end justifies the means. I agree, for what. There is a very good argument that the cause of Irish unity would have been a lot further down the road today if there had been no IRA violence.
