How did you manage to get yours working? I've been having nothing with trouble with mine. First, I tried the method Rural Homesteaders did with a homemade crossover cable, and it didn't work very well. Spotty reception and it would just transmit static sometimes. It'd key up, but not transmit anything but static until I stopped transmitting myself. I got frustrated with that because I couldn't seem to make it work right no matter what I did, and so I bought one of these repeater boxes (K-Head specifically, it looks like you and I are using the exact same one) and it doesn't work either. It arguably does worse, instead of transmitting only sometimes, it doesn't work at all and just keys both radios up constantly. Does this to all of my baofengs and no change in the settings seems to fix it. Even just plugging in the recieving handheld causes it to be unable to unkey. I've been working on this project for months now and just can't seem to make any headway at all in getting it working.

The thing that does the repeat is a pretty simple controller, although it sounds like it's just passing audio and maybe uses the VOX on your transmitting Baofeng. Aside from ID requirements (don't forget to ID your repeater), my chief concern with this would be desense. With two separate antennas, of course you don't need a duplexer, but without sufficient antenna separation, there will almost certainly be a problem with desense. If you really run an amp on it, you're definitely looking at a desense problem. Also, I'd say not to run your transmit radio at high power. The finals aren't rated for that kind of duty cycle. And it's going to get a bit warm. ...

Cool video, just a quick tip from a user who's tried a similar setup, at some point the desense will kick in and ruin the RX. I've tried with both Analog and Digital (While digital mode will not work in this configuration due to other factors), this setup would work fine using a cheap duplexer. For close range comms (within building), this setup has proven to work at least once for me.

After I tested it I saw a video that was posted that confirmed it and called out to the manufacturer asking why there was literature saying you could. People need to stop making these videos about Baofeng repeaters. They dont work! The TX/RX radios interfere with eachother. The only way to make this work is to separate the radios and antennas. This works on the bench, but as soon as you try "Real World" application of the idea, it fails due to RF over saturation. I was able to get it to work as a cross-band repeater (GMRS to 2M), but never as a true in band repeater, such as GMRS RPT15. After considering the idea of purchasing a duplexer to continue the science project, I opted for a Retivis Portable repeater. You will spend more money and time trying to get this to work, then you will by just buying a commercially available portable repeater.

Actually used it all weekend at hamvention and it worked fine. Plenty of antenna separation and didn't even need to use the amp. Hooked it up to the dual band antenna on my truck for transmit side and used my CB antenna for receive. There is about 8-9ft distance from the back corner of the truck bed where the CB antenna is to the center of the roof where the dual band antenna is. Actually just bought 2 12v 5Ah batteries from hamvention to make a good 10Ahto connect to the solar. Its easily changed from ham to gmrs just by switching radios. 5w for a weekend camping trip or use the amp for if you have a large property and want to have coverage. I will be doing an update video soon. I still want to get a higher wattage solar panel for it. The 25w panel on my truck kept it charged all weekend. There is no problem with buying ready-made commercial equipment but I like experimenting and trying different things and this just so happens to work very well. I'm sorry it didn't work for you and left a bad taste in your mouth.
