Love these silly little tag videos! My three items when hiking are a pillow as I've never had a good night sleep using my down jacket under my hat, a pair of basic sandals for the evenings so I don't have to keep my boots on when I'm in camp/town, and my journal so I can write it all down while it's fresh in my head - there is nothing better than paper and pen.

My luxury item was to take my knitting and crocheting on the JMT. The first year I was knitting a helmet liner for a soldier, but realized that I did not need 2 skeins of yarn. The 2nd year I took 4 hand warmers,- then at Lake 12,250, I camped during a thunderstorm and invited a trail runner to share my tent as she was soaking wet and shivering (she had her own tent, but it is faster to set up a tent w/ 2 people.) After I gave her all of my extra dry clothing, and fed her a hot drink, I remembered that I had these warmers and she put one in each sock, and one for her hands. (I kept 1 for future emergencies.) I was very happy when she finally stopped shivering. We survived a stressful night without any lightning strikes. I know consider the hand warmers as part of my emergency supplies.

Binoculars! A small pair. ! My favorite reason for carrying them was when coming out of Yellowstone into Jackson Hole there was, at last!, a grizzly bear way far away out in a meadow. Just a little brown dot in the green. But with the binoculars, I was able to see that she was eating a big bunch of buttercups that were hanging out of her mouth. The juxtaposition of the tender yellow buttercups with huge grizzly teeth was a sight I will never forget!. At Canyon Lands and Arches, I could see beautiful cliffs and canyons far away that I couldn't get to. I really enjoyed having that thing around my neck and used it all the time!

Very good items chosen for comfort luxury over need. It's hard for one to really think about what they need versus what they want to take gear wise. Using the hand warmers on certain places help warm me up all over. Winter I use them a lot. worth the weight especially if you get the reusable ones like I have.

I used a Johnny heater at the small of my back for an Alaska trip. I also put a pouch in my sleeping bag for the little heater. It is basically a large zippo type lighter that has been around for decades. A little heavy (you have to carry fuel for it) but it really does a good job. I have hung it from a lanyard around my neck under my jacket, or just stuck it in a pocket..

Also it's got a wide base and doesn't spill over like ever. It's a Swedish design classic since the 70s, still going strong. Should be available on Amazon for $3 or something :)

Don't be. I've done up to 60 mile day hikes, with a full size camera, lenses, tripod, and a pack full of 'just in case' gear. I'm still often passed by hikers in their late 60's and 70's. In my 20's a friends dad, who was in his mid 60's, would hike a mountain with us each year. 11,700+ feet, 9,000+ foot climb, 17 mile round trip. His father would often beat us to the top.

Thanks for the video Dixie. Baby powder is definitely a multipurpose item. Luxury items for me would be coffee, wool socks and anti microbial hand sanitizer.

Wool socks aren't really a luxury. They are a necessity and it would be unwise to hike without at least two pair.

deborah gracie it depends on the person doing the hiking. Not every person thinks alike and what some deem a necessity others may see as a luxury.

Have read the journals of explorers in jungles etc and baby powder was an absolute necessity! Maybe even more for guys. Plus, if you check the videos of any Scandinavian trekker, they ALL carry a carved wooden cup, a kuksa, folding cup not a luxury at all.

Tip: if your shoes or gloves are damp, if you out the handwarmers inside over night, they absorb the moisture and might even be warm the next morning.

I cut up a closed foam pad to make a sitting pad. It so nice to not sit in the dirt and have a little cushion.

I am 100 % on board with Baby Powder a small trick to save weight is to transfer it into a ziplock style bag and not carry the container at all ? All your other items make lots of sense to me as well Although i am not well informed on the Garmin you speak about The majority of my hiking has been on the A T and cell service was usually ok and i always found the available trai maps pretty good making it hard to get lost o course not impossible and generally the trail is marked pretty well and well traveled IMO

My lux items are a full length ZRest with the short Neoair. SpotX instead of a PLB, And I use a TI 900 pot and truck stop beanie for a cozy to rehydrate stuff, use the pot as a bowl. The thing is big enough for a full 15 ox. Can of C store chili when travelling. (Food you don't tell your Mom about)
