As someone who WORKS at a ren faire as an interactive actor, these are real questions we will ask you. We are in character, we are not allowed to break character, as far as we are concerned those are REAL horns YOU grew on your head lol! If you dress up at a ren faire, just be prepared to be asked odd questions like these. Im extremely glad you decided to play along though, we enjoy interactions where patrons dont give us the cold shoulder for doing our job LMAO

One time at ren faire a strange man came up to me and said “mlady there you are! I have a message for you! “ and proceeded to hand me a piece of paper. Me, assuming we’re playing said “ yes here I am, thank you good sir” and he left. It was a baby scroll saying “ we’re trying to reach you about your chariots extended warranty “ 😂 ren faire is fun it just takes a second to get into it

It takes me days to recover from the Ren Faire and I'm not very social when I am there. I wish I were, I love everyone having fun and being silly, but my anxiety cares not about such things. One day I will go in costume and dance and sing and pretend I don't care. Then have a complete nervous breakdown on the car ride home and ditch my friends for a couple weeks, because I'll be too burned out, but at least I'll have lived it for 1 day.

Thats an RP conversation, do t go to a ren faire in costume if you arent prepared for an RP conversation. My favorites are when I encounter random star trek costplayers at the faire because I always hide a commbage on my kit just for that occasion because I then get to dress them down as a SO would a JO who just ruined a vital mission or breeched protocols. Its hilarious to watch them freeze up.

As someone who works at a RenFest, it’s our job to remain in character and do stuff like that. I’ve asked people if they grew their wings themselves, if their horns shed like deer, what kingdom they’re the princess of, etc.

That's all honestly so adorable... i love ren faires 😂

(Like "Your outfit looks good captain, I hope your next ship raid goes well" to a pirate or "You're looking wonderful, I hope your wolf hunts are going well" to someone dressed in fake wolf pelts who I overheard talking about hunting wolves in the ren faire) They probably just realized you weren't really into it/got shy and wanted to disengage

That feeling when you're trying to overcome your social anxiety and it swallows you whole. (also your outfit was STUNNING, obvs)

Basically if you wanna cosplay, make sure you ACT the part hahaha

This is the fun part of Ren faires imo. You can just become this character and have fun interactions with other people playing characters. It's pretty much just, larping or roleplaying. :> I remember last year I went to one, I was a ink cap mushroom that was a small forest spirit. There was this guy who goes each year to it that dresses up as death, and he's a big deal there. He usually doesn't interact much other than pictures, but me and a few others tried "annoying" him by running around him and playfully chanting stuff and giggling around like idiots. He ended up playing along, chasing us around with his scythe N shi. it was honestly really fun :D It might seem cringe as an outside perspective, but it's honestly all about just having fun and not worrying about having to be "mature" or "proper". :3

Lots of people at the festival role play as if they are in that actual setting a fantasy land it’s magical

in dnd, it takes tieflings a little over ten years to grow their horns. she was either just seeing how into it you were or LARPing her character

i doubt this person knows what a tiefling is. she only dressed up and went to a ren faire for views. that's why her story is kind of boring and stupid. the little girl probably sensed she was false.

There is this joke in fiction, where a mythical creature goes to a cosplay convention and thinks the people are their people so she might be one

She probably wanted to role play animals discussing shedding the horns, but realized that the topic was too niche (hence why she bailed), since she knew it was nearing the season for her animal to shed its horns, but you had absolutely no idea what the lifetime of a ram’s horns even looks like conceptually.

"Omg she grew hers in three years now I feel insecure"

This reminds me of my first time at band camp where someone came up to me during our evening snack break on the first night and asked me completely out of the blue something along the lines of “what animal are you” and I was so caught off guard I didn’t know what to say so I said human, and they walked away so dejected. I felt so bad for failing the NPC dialogue. They then did that to me again the following night at the same time and this time I replied “fox” and I made a new friend :D

This reminds me of when I was a butcher in a local grocery store chain, I had a single guy come up looking for turkey for Thanksgiving but it was only him and didn't want a while one. He also said he'd never cooked turkey before so I showed him some boneless turkey we had and he actually asked me with a straight face if they were grown without bones

I've done A LOT of cons...that's just not how it works. If I don't want to "be in character" I don't have to.

This always happens to me at cons because I always assume theyre being 100% serious when theyre trying to talk to me as my character. I do realize but only after an awkward interaction or 2

Quick tip for anyone planning to visit a Ren Faire: If someone's in costume, expect them to be in character. Approaching in character is like a handshake. This is as much to unsettle the Normies as it is that we're all just there to escape the real world. If you know someone well, in character, you can have a normal conversation off-stage later. Another reason is that Faires hire "flavor actors" who are like Disney characters: they are not allowed to break character. For some people it's a challenge to be mistaken for a professional character.

Depends on the Faire. Some are actually about historical accuracy. Some are casual but not about fantasy. In fact I'd say most are welcoming of fantasy but they're not themed that way.

I have done something like this once. I was recovering from social anxiety and part of that was to expose myself to conversations. Meaning actually talking to strangers and such. At this point I had made it quite far in recovery, but boy, oh boy, I hadn't regained my social SKILL yet. So I'm at a gas station and try to force myself to make small talk with the cashier. Two sentences into the conversation I have nothing left to say, so I try to make a joke but since I'm awkward as hell it came out wrong. I just deadass asked him if he's seen any elephants around this part recently and burst out laughing. That was in central Europe and the guy looks at me with a stone-cold expression. This used to make me cringe so hard...

Well, there is a lot of roleplay involved in renfaire and the like. At least from what I heard.

I’ve grown up at a ren faire my fam and I have been doing for abt 20 years. It’s a favorite pastime of participants to mess with patrons and play into whatever you show up as/with. So Yknow if you show up with something unusual, prepare to get poked at lmao.

Im using the npc line, the next time im at a convention lol
