My AWFUL Flight on Air India's Filthy Boeing 787

I was looking forward to flying on Air India's Boeing 787 Dreamliner. Sadly my excitement was short lived as my flight turned into a comedy of errors.

I had an Air India experience I'll never forget. I was flying business class between the US and India. Halfway through the flight, I wanted to go to the bathroom, there were two bathrooms at the front and back. Now I didn't know the front one was for first class passengers, I mean it wouldn't have mattered to me either way if I had to use the one behind me. So I get up and this guy attendant asks me what I'm doing and I just point to the bathroom and say I wanna go to the bathroom. He looks at me, narrows his eyes, gives me a growling and threatening look and through clenched teeth growls "Nootttt Heerrrreee" exactly with that speed as if I'm trying to steal some bathroom experience from him instead of saying "Oh I'm sorry sir, this one is for first class passengers, please use the one over there reserved for business class passengers". First I was puzzled, then eventually I realized why he was saying no, and just shrugged it off. I mean if they treat someone paying business class airfare like that, what else is there to say.

And once, I was on econ and tried to do the same (a different acquaintance) who was in biz and I was in econ, they were nice enough to even let me sit beside him for a couple of hours and provided me with a biz meal ! I think it's how most of us feel about our national airlines. I'm a born and bred Londoner who has lived in Australia for over 30 years. British Airways and Qantas are near the bottom of my list of preferred airlines - mostly due to their snotty cabin staff. I swear I am the world's most low maintenance airline passenger (just get me safely to my destination & I'll love you forever). I remember flying BA from London to New York and I was beyond excited. When the drinks trolley turned up I asked for a glass of Champagne - I was quite happy to pay for it. I was snottily informed by the hostie that they only served Champagne in first class. That just about sums up how BA cabin staff feel about economy class passengers.

Lufthansa (German airline) is okay - I used to fly them a lot, but haven’t in years. But yeah, I would say that of all the airways I’ve flown as a global traveller, I prefer to choose Virgin over any others. That being said, I’d love to fly one of the Middle Eastern airlines (like Etihad or something) because they sound like really great experiences, but I tend to factor in cost when I’m flying, and they’re quite expensive.

It was a long time ago, but I once had a very bizarre flight on Air India. It was a 747, and once we reached altitude, water started dripping from the ceiling onto the passengers in several areas of the plane. The crew went around with blankets so people could cover up. Apparently there were inflatable life rafts stored in the ceiling of the plane, and these had just been removed and tested before our flight, and put back in place without being dried properly. The altitude cause the moisture to condense and start dripping.

Air India never returned the $400.00 from the previous two way flight I had paid for. Where as, other air lines returned the money to a few friends who were also traveling. That would mean the oversight is fundamentally lacking since its the same "organization" (i.e. the government) basically just vetting its own "airline division". Your friends may have a different experience even if they are also on a state-owned airline....just as long as it is from another nation, then that stat-owned airline can't make up their own rules in India like they can under their own government at home. State-owned airlines are not necessary once a nation is large and prosperous enough to support a self-sustained (i.e. organic) airline industry....so hopefully the government appointees running the company will be ok with letting control go one day

When they stopped both AI and LH flights due to some argument over how many flights each airline was allowed to operate, I got first my LH flight canceled, not knowing why booked AI and they also canceled the same day. Got refund from LH within 3 days, from AI only after 2 years after a long fight and only because a friend knew someone in high rank at AI

There is a lot of propaganda in youtube these days against China, IndiaActually India is the fastest growing economic power currently earlier it was China!!! Poverty is currently shrinking rapidly as more and more Indians are entering middle class category! India has the fastest growing middle class and currently India is in its transition phase something which China faced in 1990s, South Korea in 1970s! Comparing an emerging typical Asian economic powerhouse with a backward Islamic Middle Eastern hellhole is ridiculous

My first Air India experience also started out of Delhi. I can only say that I would never ever schedule a long stopover in Delhi or on Air India ever ever again as a solo woman traveller. Even if transiting, you're required to go outside of the airport and come back in again - cue being accosted by taxi drivers nonstop like in your video. Then if you have an overnight/red eye flight, the airport is covered in male passengers randomly sleeping on the ground in every corner and direction around the gates. It just felt wildly strange and unsafe and I could not rest for one moment in such an environment. All of the women began to cluster or group together for safety in a very well lit area. And then I got onto my plane.... It was not better. It was the most run-down plane I had ever been in. However, I did get to sit next to some female indian engineers on the plane and they were very cool.

The reason the engine was started before you got off the gate was because the APU was probably not working. That is why the plane was so hot and why it when dark, the ground staff probably pulled the gate power and everything shut down because the APU failed. The engine start at the gate allowed them to have electric power on the ground while being pushed back before they got to the place on the apron where they would normally start the engines and turn off the APU. Engines are started far from the gate for safety reasons to protect the ground crew from getting sucked into one.

Tata before the government took it from him). Since Air India is getting privatised and the Tata Group already has experience running Vistara and AirAsia India, Air India's reputation can be built back up. They just have to fire all the staff and employees with a mindset of working at a government setting and poach experienced employees from world class private airline carriers to propel the airliner to world class standards of service, maintenance and experience. But... then again having worked with the Tatas (as one of my clients) I can say that the predominantly old management are trying their level best to keep up with the radically shifting new management styles of this era and generation. Thanks for honestly sharing the Air India, not so Business class flight experience. After watching this video, I will never fly Air India. Once, I went on vacation to India with family. Our luggage didn’t arrive at Mumbai airport. A Security guard suggested to look for it myself. He even opened the door to the runway for me. I walked up to the plane when it was dark at night and heavy rain. At least the guard was right, my luggage was sitting on the ground. Dragged 5 suitcases, one at a time, into the baggage area. You can have an idea about their airport security.

India is overall very diverse from inside The crowd, chaos which you see is just a tiny part of that with the rest of the parts being completely difference For example you can experience a silent forest trek in Himalayan mountains with old buddhist monasteries if you go to Northeast india, you can see a version of Tibet in Ladakh, you can see a natural retreat in the mountain valley in Himachal Pradesh You can experience a typical seaside beach in Goa, you can experience the beauty of tropical backwaters in Kerala and a old European town vibe in the city of Kochi You can be amazed to see the flora and fauna of Ooty a hill station in South India + mountain railway ride in Darjeeling, Himachal Pradesh Moreover you can even experience snowfall in Kullu, Himachal Pradesh Better watch the travel vlogs of India made by american, british youtubers like Ride with Gabi, Those happy days, Dannys Gotta world loose!!!!

That's because Indians have given up their original culture which really had high standards of hygiene, which modern Indians don't even know about. And the Mughals and the British brought their own culture and showed it as superior to that of India. British eat meat like bacon and pork in the morning without bathing or even brushing teeth, and might have tapeworms in their intestines. Is that hygiene? And you wipe up with a piece of paper and leave after the business with no anal hygiene. Externally you may look polished with a suit and a necktie, but is this civilized behaviour?

I've had the displeasure of knowing a few Air India employees. They're full of themselves, arrogant, huge sense of entitlement, smug in the knowledge that no matter what happens their jobs are secure (this was true until Air India was privatised - hopefully they no longer have this ridiculous sense of security), highly unionized, highly political and prone to threatening the management, crafty tactics about how to stiff the management and skirt the law, and rude as hell. The shabby aircraft are merely a reflection of their shabby attitudes and the general fatalistic/corrupt mindset that pervades the country itself. Hopefully the Tatas will turn this airline around and restore it to its old glory, but with thousands of dinosaurs working for it and everything in India subject to political whims that will be a challenge.

There aren't enough negative superlatives that I can say about my experiences with Air India, from everything being broken, to dirty, to late. But about 3 years ago, I finally had enough. We had a AI 777 do an emergency landing in Germany (medical emergency) in the middle of the night. Everyone was asleep and the captain announces that after refueling we'll be up in the air in under 30 minutes. I look out my window and see my wing covered 85+% with a sheet of ice, likely from the rapid descent through the clouds. I look out at the other wing - Same thing. I tell a steward who is like, "Sir, that's very unlikely, it's summer." I drag him to a window, he looks out, his eyes widen, and he all but runs to the cabin. A few minutes later they announce departure will be delayed due to deicing. We were never "deiced" but sat on the tarmac for 3+ hrs watching the ice melt. Finally, after it did, we took off. At no point did I ever see either the captain or co-pilot outside doing a walk around. I think I maybe saved the lives of everyone on the plane that day. That was when I decided I was never again flying a non-US/UK (or non-El Al) flag carrier again.

Was Air India much cheaper though than a western airline? If you are paying roughly the same price, it is shameful service from a company. Having said that, you can still get outstanding service from 5 star hotels in India, so it is possible to fix things, but not on Air India where it seems knowing someone important or your caste is how you get a job (the latter concept is bizarre to westerners). Or cheat if you are a pilot, which is really scary. It is a pity, because a country the size of India should have a really good airline, maybe things will improve with TATA?

The complete mgt and staff overall are I guess not from any premium institutions... And are either recommended or pass outs from B OR C grade colleges or dime a dozen MBA programs.... Half or most can't pronounce and poor in language delivery... Unprofessional and don't really know the meaning of Hospitality.... Most are arrogant and have massive attitude issues... In the end, the only difference from economy from business was the seat, the rest was more or less the same experience. Not worth paying extra for such a "service".

it certainly is more than the seat. it depends on airlines; business and first class have their lounge with free drinks and food, choice of drinks and food on the flight.

@@willengel2458 That review actually reminded me of some Aeromexico business flights I took pre-pandemic (I assume now it can only be worse with even less competition). It really was just the seat, the attendants were really aloof and unwilling to do anything. The lounge? In Mexico City it was crowded with upgraded econ passengers, and nowhere to sit!

I also hate the crew controlled windows. The cabin always feels so much more confined when they are locked closed during daylight and they do provide eye shades for those with issues. One of the promoted features of the 787 is the extra large windows but not much point if they are darkened out is there. A means of crowd control to the crews advantage me thinks.

I really don't mind though. If that the decision of cruise, well we have just to cooperate. I know it would be frustrating for many people, and we want to enjoy the land at that altitude, but I guess each airlines have their thinking.

I had cause to fly to India seven years ago (business class as well, as it happens). When planning the flights, Air India seemed the obvious choice but after reading a few reviews I dumped that idea and went BA. Looks like I definately made the right choice! Have to agree about the presentation of Indira Gandhi Airport though - clean and easy to navigate. You failed to mention the travalators that go on for ever! I also have to say that immigration was a dream - I was called up to the desk and presented my visa. The gentleman at the desk ran his finger down a list of numbers, found mine, gave me a really welcoming smile and hammered a big blue entry stamp into my passport. That was it - done.

In spite of all the coverage, I found the 787 quite underwhelming. And, Noel, filthy shade button was just as not clean on the BA flight that I was on to Hyderabad from Heathrow, and that in business class, if it matters at all. All in all, the BA flights were among the best flights I had experienced in a long long time. Great service and such friendly flight crew; no sarcasm there :)

I can speculate that the reason the power went off. The Auxiliary Power Unit (that's the hole at the end of the tail of the 777 at 10:57) stopped working while the Ground Power Unit wasn't plugged in and running. It would explain why they'd start the engine at the gate. It is very common in the airline industry and is nothing to worry about. As a matter of fact, I was once working on a Airbus A330, when the APU literally blew up. Much like your dreamliner in the video, we still ended up pushing out that flight and it arrived safely at it's location.

I've only flown long haul out of Delhi once, but it was in 1975 on Syrian Arab Airways (I was doing it on the cheap!). It involved two super-annuated 707's, changing at Damascus... Both aircraft were ex BOAC, ex BEA, ex BEA Airtours....etc. The route was Delhi, Tehran, Damascus, Munich, LHR. Certainly an experience!

The remote control windows are a HUGE reason why ill never fly on the 787 or A350 Whats the point of paying extra for a window seat if you cant actually look out the window?
