MY AU PAIR EXPERIENCE | I WAS AN AU PAIR | WHY I LEFT MY HOST FAMILY WITHOUT A GOODBYE!?

Ойын-сауық

I’m sharing my experience when I was an au pair, it doesn’t mean that everyone’s experience will be the same. This is for someone going through the same thing I went through to let them know that they are not the only one, be strong and for someone who is thinking of becoming an au pair. I hope you find my story helpful.

    Being an aupair is not easy... I'm so sorry you went through that 😢 I'm currently an aupair in Germany, but I'm South African...my host family became horrible and intolerable, they put me through hell for 2 weeks then i changed, now I'm with a new family in Berlin...i now have trust issues wen it comes to host families but i hope I'll have a great experience with them

    I am from SA and was an Au Pair 20 years ago. Your experience seems like a story out of a horror movie compared to the experience I had. I doubt back then the agency would’ve even allowed you to stay with the family when the needs of the child changed. I was blessed to have had a support who was 100% for the Au Pair’s wellbeing. It was totally normal back then to have Au Pairs switching families 2 to 3 times until they find a perfect fit. I had a lovely Jewish family.

    Thank you for watching. I don’t want my video to scare you from doing au pair, it should be your guide and learn from it. Au pair experiences are not the same, I have friends who had an amazing experience and even after my own experience I would still recommend it to someone because from it I learned so much and it made me stronger as a person, I met amazing friends from different countries that had my back until the end. My advice to you, take your time to match with the family, when you get there enjoy the journey cos you might have a good experience, if it doesn’t work out it’s ok you have an option to rematch. If it doesn’t work out after rematch, it’s still ok because you gave your all and were brave enough to try.

    I‘m so sorry that this had happened to you! My first host family lived in Chicago too. I left them after 3 weeks because they were just weird did inappropriate things and treated me like an employee. When I left the family I had a horrible time. After 3 weeks and many many horrible things they had done to make it as hard as possible for me to find a new family, I rematched and moved to a new host family in the Washington State. I can just say that they are the best thing that has ever happened to me! They call me their daughter and I know that they love me. I truly enjoy my experience here and I’m thankful every day for my miracle (that’s what like to call my 2nd host family). Especially since I also know how horrible being an au pair can be. I’m so sorry that you didn’t find your miracle in the US 💔

    I’m glad to know that you rematched with the best family. Some families just don’t deserve to have au pairs. Crazy that after I left they were given another au pair that stayed with them few months and left, she reached out to me asking why I left the family. Things they were doing to me, they did it to her too. Me and that au pair didn’t even know each other to make this up.

    I was also an Au Pair and went into rematch. I have to agree that at the end of the day the agencies aren't that concerned about the au pairs. Sometimes it felt like we were just cheap labour. But I had many friends who had host families who just treated them like cheap labour and it was all about the families taking advantage. I still think au pairing was the best experience I could have done for myself. I learnt so much about myself, but its not as whimsical as the agents make it seem when you first apply.

  • @AfricanCalifornia

    @AfricanCalifornia

    I agree, when you apply they promise to protect you and you gonna have this amazing experience, you’ll feel like part of the family but that’s not how families treats us. I was feeling the same way too, cheap labour. The only thing we can appreciate is how it changes us and we learn a lot about ourselves. When I started, I was shy and couldn’t stand up for myself but I came out strong and now I can speak up if I’m not happy about something.

    I also went without a goodbye. The family I lived with was from California, I had just moved fro Washington state because of the weather and decided to go to a two weeks annual camp meeting. While at the camp meeting I met a family that I shared my situation of wanting to get a job and settle down. They were trying to sign up their aunt for Medicaid so she could pay her caregiver. I waited the time they had given but nothing happened and I could not be paid if she hadn’t been approved. I called the social service (inhome supportive services)since I had my provider no and their aunts case no and I was told they couldn’t approve her. I had stayed there for like 5 months no money but a roof under my head I used to buy my food. I dint feel right since my life was at pose not working and not in school but just taking care of their aunty “as we I wait for her approval by the government Medicaid” I decided to just live and look for work, I walked in at the Salvation Army lancaster and the fact that it was Christmas season they were hiring the bell ringers (kettle donations) the people who stand outside stores in Christmas outfits wishing everyone a merry Christmas rigging the bell 🛎. I shared my living situation to the Salvation Army managers and they found a need to host me till I get enough money to rent a place even thought they aren’t allowed to since the houses they live are company houses. Still while ringing the bell a sweet lady approached me after she detected my accent she asked if I was in school I told her I dropped my schooling and I was trying to enroll to a new school since I was still new. She told me she was and ELS teacher in the neighboring city. I also shared that I dint have somewhere to stay since my Salvation Army host are never allowed to host people but had decided to give me a roof. She offered to take me the college she worked, offered to help me look for work and stay with them till I get on my feet. In short I don’t wana waste more time since the family I live with kept telling me that their aunts social worker told them that she was getting approved soon!

    I am a single mother of twins in Atlanta seriously considering getting an au pair. I’m so sorry that this happened to you. They seemed not to care about you. I definitely do would not want my au pair to walk away feeling like the way you did. What advice would you give a potential host?

  • @AfricanCalifornia

    @AfricanCalifornia

    3 жыл бұрын

    Thank you😊. Au pair is a really great program if both host and au pair has good intentions. From the point of an au pair I’d say that being in a different country with people you don’t know really well is not easy. So making your au pair comfortable and feeling like the part of the family is important. The first month is usually not easy on Au pairs. So my advice is that while you’re doing interviews, be open and be honest when au pairs ask questions, Could be about your expectations. Understanding that au pair is a cultural exchange program is really important, so on days when your au pair is off allow her to explore and make friends. If au pairs feel cared for and a part of the family, everything will flow naturally. Take your time doing the interviews cos not all au pairs are good too. If you’re not sure about someone, possibly it’s not going to work. Communication is key, make your au pair feel safe to come talk to you about anything. That helps so you know if there’s something going on or if they are not happy about something. If you’re not happy about something too, voice it out right away.

    Sthandiwe so by the time you left the family. Did you come back home for proper healing and went back or you continued to stay with friends until you were healed?.. I'm sorry you had to go through such hard phase 🤗🤗

    I was a Aupair in Spain . I had a terrible experience . Can’t believe it’s been a year since I left Spain . My the host mom had a bad drinking problem & the host dad was awesome . But it was too much too handle & the kids were cussing a lot to be 7 & 10 years old . I left right away back to the United States 😐🚫 lol 🤣

    okay i have a question. is there anything that they can actually do, in your type of situation, if you just get fed up with them and decide to leave? can they actually prevent you from getting a visa back into the country again?
