Malyna Skafidas the case was a fruit art. the kids chose purple first because she didn't know what to do and we could choose what area and that would be that colour. nobody explained and she never said what colour we use first.

I remember back in grade 6 the art teacher assigned everyone a task to draw anime. I instantly knew this was my moment to shine, all my hard work will finally be acknowledged. She teaches everyone how to draw anime however I was already far too confident so I decided to begin drawing. So she’s complimenting people’s drawings and their versions of anime and at one point she stands next to me and looks directly at my drawing and her first words were... “aren’t the eyes meant to be bigger?” I felt so betrayed because my ego was getting larger when everyone was complimenting it and as soon as she criticised it I felt like she sucked out my soul. I mean, if she compliment your friends' drawings, most likely they are not so good, so she complimented to encourage them practise more. While she saw yours, she knew you already knew the deal, so she gives you criticism to make you better (according to her anime standard)

same thing happened to me. I was in fifth grade and I loved anime style eyes. I thought I was good at drawing anime too. then one day we were drawing owls. and I asked the art teacher if we had to do a specific kind of eye. she said no we could do what's kind of eyes we wanted. so I did anime eyes on the owl. when I showed it to her. she said my eyes were stupid. and I was like OK whatever, she doesn't like them. OK. but then the next week on art period, she gave me my owl back with the eyes cut out, and her own drawing of eyes taped into the empty spaces.....tell me that's not messed up!

Once my elementary school art teacher told me in grade 6 that I “wasn’t creative” I vaguely remember it but sometimes one of my friends reminds me of it and how she was so stupid whenever we talk about our old teachers

When I first started drawing I would draw nothing but cats, most likely due to the influence of reading the entire Warrior cats series, but anime changed that habit. When I got into anime I started to see humans in a new light since I usually despised humans and turned to cats, so I began to just constantly doodle characters in the anime style. And though i'm still not great at it, my skills at humans improved drastically thanks to the motivation given to me by anime. i have watched erased

the art teacher i currently have is really laid back. she doesn’t care what your art is like as long as you put effort in, and she always makes sure to assign projects with different materials so if jimmy is good at painting but bad at drawing he doesn’t have to worry because she will assign drawing and painting and then average the scores out :D

My art teacher in middle school just yelled at everyone and said their art sucked. The teacher literally made me hate art. This didn’t just happen to me or my class but anyone who had her. She was probably the most hated teacher in the school.

I love it when you encounter teachers that boost your talent! Now that's what a teacher is all about!

I little while back I stopped watching domics but then on Netflix I saw the show erased, and I remembered it from somewhere, now after watching this video I see where I've heard it from

I'm an art teacher! i was a school teacher for years then got sick so had to stop teaching. I do art professionally now and i run my own classes for small groups of young folks after school on the side cos i miss teaching mainly lol. I have always enjoyed DBZ and studio ghibli especially, but didnt know much about Anime outside of the stereotypes and intersectional history with western animation. But when i had a student who was obsessed with anime i went online and watched some docos and tutorials about the techniques and history of the style so i could critique their personal work better. honestly, when it comes to art i tell my kids there will always be someone worse than you at it, someone better than you at it, but never someone who is you. your experience, vision, passions etc are all intertwined in your art and how you choose to express it, im here to help you do that THE BEST way you can do it, who cares if it's a different style- its not about the final art produced- as a teacher its about the influence and teaching that you do with the student, so they are equipped to continue making their best art throughout their lives. People will move on from styles and trends and eventually find their own style, but one should never suppress a students artistic voice just cos they dont appreciate the tone. I'm glad you overcame the negativity!

Young teachers are always the best.

It's definitely important to experiment with other art styles, but it sounds like that teacher wasn't encouraging at all, which is terrible! The way to push a student beyond their comfort zone is to offer constructive criticism, not totally diss their drawing.

+Korin The thing is, you're mostly right. She WAS doing her job, and Domics even acknowledged that she did have a point. However, the point is that everyone has their own style, and since it was a personal sketchbook, the artist can show who they are through it. But Mrs. Holly was disrespecting the way Domics drew his art style and made him more discouraged about taking art in the first place. In a way, she is attacking him as a person because their preferences do not match up. Since it's a personal sketchbook, he's meant to experiment with style anyway. As you learn more art, your style changes with it, just like how Domics did. You don't have to learn the basics AND the style separately. Basically, you can teach people art, but you can also be nicer and respectful about it, too. Keep yo' class.

+Korin I have to disagree when you say you "have" to. It helps, but a artist can learn all those things through other styles. Especially those who practice an anime style, that if someone puts time into it, can learn proper lighting, perspectives, ect, ect. Though once again I will say that learning basics of realism MAY help ( it depends on the individual), but ultimately shouldn't be required.

Korin We'll have to agree to disagree, it purely depends on the individual. You don't have to be "special", you just need to take the time to learn, understand, and practice those things. The style you use doesn't matter, you're putting just as much work into understand the fundamentals as you would through realism. And saying which is better would be subjective because they're different styles and harder to compare. I'm not a talented or "special" artist, and never will. My art is mediocre at best, but I still understand these fundamentals and can put them into action.

+Korin Play that card huh? Once again, it depends on the individual, it clicks for some, but not for some too. It also works the other way around! Where other styles it doesn't click. Its just how people work.

***** Yeha. I mean sure, there are "rules" in art, so to speak. That's why we divide art into different styles, all of which may or may not appeal to us in different ways. But it's silly to force kids to conform to one genre/style if they want to go into a different one. A bit like forcing an aspiring fiction author to write news reports.

That is very true. I mean I understand teachers want to teach us techniques but sometimes it's better to just do something and learn from experience. Mine was even worse because he was forgetful and if he assigned us something he would tell us "don't worry about the due date" and then the next day ask us to hand it over -_- That or he would forget we did stuff and we would work really hard on it and he would be like "ok that assignment won't be graded".

How come every gosh darn time people talk about cartoon or anima the art teacher hates it?! I mean what the heck?!?!

As an art teacher and as a person who grew up watching/ recently fell back in love with anime, I feeeeeel you! I fell in love with art because of my interest in anime and arts freedom. I just couldn't (and still can't) draw in the anime style that well. Lol. I would also like to say that not all teachers are good teachers. As I've taught for the past 5 years, I'm surprised how many art teachers (or teachers in general) are like that and put down students! Granted, I've only worked in really bad schools in low income areas. I was just aIwas lucky and tended to have supportive, nice teachers. (Until I went into AP and got judged super harshly, because I wasn't as "skilled" as I am now. Granted, I get it. My ideas and concepts were always awesome though! ) I'm glad you got a better one the next year! You kinda confirmed my new idea to be a "KZread Art Teacher". I always put my demonstration videos up on KZread so I could play them for my kids, but this school year I told them to follow it so they could pull up the video they were needing and use it during class. My new idea is to use it to connect with them as well as the demo videos and become a KZread "personality". Hopefully it's not "illegal communication" somehow and cause parents to get mad at me. 😅 Its hard being a teacher that wants to connect with and support their kids and you only get to see them 45 minutes a day.😭

Here I was thinking that this video couldn't get any better and then he mentioned ERASED gosh first video I'm watching and I'm in love with this channel already

I loved drawing, but everyone, even teachers sid i coildn't draw. So i gave up for a while. Until, i read like 30 comic books and fell in love with telling a story via visual medium. So, while everyone said i couldn't, i bought like 3 how to draw books at the time, and watched thousands of tutorials. (Lot an exaggeration, i have over 2000 in my playlist.) I still have a lot to learn, but looking back, my art improved immensely. Do the point where i can make entire cover page esq pieces in a comic book style. (I suck at buildings though.) I now have about 20 how to draw books as of today, and practice almost daily. My 1 supportive art teacher has even put some of my art in competitions, which i came in second in pastel, 3rd in water colour. I love art, and i love the learning process. (I love very difficult and challenging tasks.) Currently my art is at a developmental stage of being gritty comic book/fantasy style, but i wish to develop it to the point of realistic dark fantasy, and something close to a jim lee james raiz mix.

I had one art teacher who is like this and she could not even tolrate guns
