What would you say to those who may classify Christianity as falling under "Conviction"? When I ponder all the different sects throughout history, they all (including Christianity) feel like blips on a timeline. Some belief systems continue on today, and others not so much. It is in this way I am inclined to consider the Christian faith as a sort of group-conviction. Many believers I've encountered shut out differing opinions or new information on the basis it could contradict their religious views. The longer I type this the more it feels combative though it isn't meant to be. If you see this I would love to hear your thoughts!

I very much appreciate this comment, @tuckerallen1421, and I did not at all take it as combative. You’ve put your finger on a key question here. I'll write my thoughts on this, and I hope you'll tell me what you think. There are several elements to your point (Christianity is one religion among many; Christianity seems to be historically contingent; Christians are wont to ignore new information when defending their faith), but I want to focus on the question with which you begin: is adherence to Christianity (or any other faith) a form of conviction, as I’ve defined it in this video? My response is that it certainly can be. Everything depends on what relationship one cultivates to one’s beliefs. I think that reason is inevitably compelled to ground itself in something superrational. It has some say in where it chooses to ground itself, but only insofar as it is conscious of its own limitations. To maintain human integrity, the superrational needs to be consonant with the rational, not contrary to it. Many people of faith, as you note, settle on beliefs that tend to enslave reason to nonsense or to artificially limited positions, and I would regard this as being an act of conviction, and ultimately unsustainable, save as one is willing to renounce one’s complete humanity. The challenge is in attempting to find that transcendent revelation, that set of superrational beliefs, which naturally accords with, and illuminates, reason. I admit it is not an easy balance, and it requires a constant and vigilant openness, as well as ongoing resistance to the temptations of “dogmatic” closure. But in a way, this is only the extension of the philosophical life itself. I’d very much enjoy hearing your further thoughts on this. Thanks again for pushing me here.

Another fascinating video, John. Keep 'em coming! Any likelihood that Man of Loxley will be available via other Amazon sites? The link takes me to what appears to be the German? version of Amazon only?

I appreciate it, thank you @BertoConsalvi-p1y! I’m not sure why the link is taking you to the German Amazon. I’ve tried the link on several devices, and it always takes me to the English version... Here is the unabridged link, in case this helps: www.amazon.com/Man-Loxley-Tales-Robin-Hood/dp/1735669156/ref=sr_1_1?crid=3RF0IJ4CJLVTG&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.hE9DNpCA_vJ1iqKuj6no0LQDCsBPLmPDYfZ2YDZTm2f-VTtwx9_6iSuj0zalrJJLMxUtXB4QVV6NP_UfhdWTV0r28a_c9k-fK88rsZ9KNhzs4HwX1YSUpB8WQHQFy4p4O1dN-D213Yukd8MpseB6aho4emyfLoCVGFg6Dm9mue3EwZKi1w4N-yb1tbY3FKv4KlVeJcIrQrGg3cvH-jl1W2HA76Ym_brNzgch_7XARaw.ZvMv-1aKtqu-akxR1PwI8EbaHs6BGBSMz_H9q2xedWo&dib_tag=se&keywords=john+bruce+leonard&qid=1720399622&s=books&sprefix=john+bruce+leonard%2Cstripbooks%2C121&sr=1-1
