My mobile amateur radio (ham) station has been evolving over the past several months. My antenna configuration is finally at a point where it may be ready to stand still for a while... MAYBE! ;-) Here is the latest on how I've configured the roof.

    I've had my ATAS120 just about as long as you, I think people poo-poo the antenna because it is small, for several years it could only be used with two rigs, the 857 and 897 and it isn't made in the USA. My biggest thrill with this antenna was to bust a pile-up with a VK station from Victoria, BC. I'll have to admit that it was a happy accident though, sure wasn't superior operating skill. My other thrill was I had my kids in the car, we were at the pear of the Malahat pass on Vancouver Island, we worked Italy. Any mobile HF antenna is a compromise no matter how big it is, where it is made or how much it cost. Poo-pooers of this little giant should consider that none of the equipment we enjoy today would be here if there weren't for the early amateurs all over the world who have experimented, not for personal gain, but for personal curiosity and to discuss/share what they learned with anyone interested enough to ask and listen.

    Thanks for sharing that! I recently removed my roof rack to investigate some tree damage. I'll be without a rack for a bit and may move my ATAS to my rooftop NMO mount. I'll be able to do some direct testing against my Scorpion. Stay tuned!

    Unfortunately, I won't be driving the full setup to MD on the 29th. I considered bringing a smaller Yagi setup that's not yet built or featured here. But I don't know that Yagis are practical for POTA on 6/2m. So, I was considering just the loops. What do you think?

    Outstanding, my friend! I enjoyed listening to you explain the purpose of each antenna, why, and how you have them all mounted. Though I know nothing of all the frequencies and bands, it was cool to hear you explain the purposes. The bonus is that they're on a cool for which we both have a passion.

    Hi 👋 there Scott. It was very nice meeting you in Berryville Ham radio festival. I was the one who wanted to try to get the same set up for my grandpops car. I was wondering if you would be able to help me by the same Tower set up, you have on top of your car? If you can contact the person you bought it from and ask them if they can make another one for me If you can get a price on it for me, that would be great. Thanks.

    What is the mileage on your GTI? It's got to be up there with some of the higher mileage Mk7 GTI's. Do you have any other cars or just the GTI. Very interesting set up, it's cool to see people make the most of their cars and purpose build them in unique ways!

    I'm approaching 184,000 miles (just past 295,000 km). My previous driving schedule had me predicting that I'd reach 200,000 miles in 2023. But I don't think that'll happen. I WILL surpass 300,000 km soon, though. I'll share a milestone video at that point for my metric subscribers. As for my garage, my wife drives a 2018 Jetta that just passed 40k. But only she drives it. My GTI is my daily driver. 👍

    The top Moxon's feed line is 16 feet long. I think 17 feet would have been a better choice. That's especially true now that I have a different Moxon that's not yet fitted to my mast. Thanks for visiting!

    Are all of those steel harpoons DOT approved to stay on the car during an accident?

  • @StealthGTI

    @StealthGTI

    Жыл бұрын

    No. But I'm sure none of the commercially available cargo boxes, baskets and other cargo management items are DOT approved, either. IF they are, I suspect ALL rooftop cargo can and will separate from a roof rack in the event of a catastrophic accident. Their plastic and rubber fittings can take only so much force. Given my steel hardware, I think my setup is as safe as any other rooftop cargo and safer than unsecured pick-up truck/trailer cargo. Still, I don't want to find out first hand. ;-) Thanks for visiting.
