MY ANOREXIA RECOVERY // New York City // the spot where I relapsed

Фильм және анимация

I had a work trip to New York last week, and filmed a little bit whilst I was there. New York is actually where I relapsed just over a year ago, so I tried to use it as a challenge to myself to eat and enjoy all the things I missed out on when I was getting ill there. Not going to lie it was a challenging, emotional and triggering trip, but I'm glad I could practice new behaviours this time and actually enjoy all the amazing food there.

    You are such an inspiration and really helping me. Thank you for sharing your head thoughts! I found can be SO hard to extract what is the disordered thought and what is 'normal brain' thought, as for ages they were so entwined, it took me donkeys years to separate the two and then recognise them for what they were. Oh and I can completely empathise about how hard it can be to revisit places due to all of the memories it sets off. I couldn't go somewhere 8 years for that reason. You did stirlingly - I hope with all of the conflicting thoughts and perhaps sadness it conjured up you still enjoyed yourself and the foods you tried. I have found your self-pep talks really helpful as I have started to apply them to myself! Your inner light shines through these videos - anorexia is weird, as an outsider seeing your intelligence and beauty in and out it hard to believe anorexia took hold (or that you have the same thoughts/feelings as myself!!). But then I suppose that is the strange nature of it (do you think some are biologically predisposed?!) You are still so slim, keep going :)

    Cannot tell you how much this video resonated. I hit my lowest point in New York (lived for 9 years, in a relationship for 8 of them). My job is still based there...I have a trip booked for the end of October and you have completely inspired me to enjoy every moment of it and say yes to all of the things I previously said NO to.

    I can’t even explain how much your videos are helping me! I’m so glad I found your channel and have gotten so much support and help from you! I’m not usually very active here in the comment section but I just wanted to say that I’m so thankfull for you making these videos and it has been lovely watching these and getting to know the beautifull and strong person making these videos! I’m only 14 but I’ve struggled with orthorexia and anorexia for a few years and am recently going through some what of a relapse and your videos give me hope. It’s crazy to think that you’re twice my age and have still been able to help me so much!❤️ also I just got back from a trip to New York yesterday so it’s crazy to see you there in all the places I just visited. I also watched tons of your videos on that trip whenever ed was trying to ruin the trip with restrictions and you really helped! thank you for being you and hope you have a great time💕

    Megan, I just want to say thank you. Your videos are amazing and so helpful for me. Going trough recovery is obviously not easy, but watching your videos and seeing that those feelings that I have are normales, it helps me going further and not letting my ED having the power on me. I can’t wait every week to watch it and I always learn something new or feel like I’m on the right track. I can’t say how many times I repeat “opposite action” out loud or in my mind, and that thing your said about dog breeds helps me accepting the way my body looks like and the fact that I can’t change it. You’re me idol!

    I must go back to New York. I went in 1996 and was sick with a heavy cold and it rained for 3 days! Thank you for showing us a bit of NYC. Also, that you are NOW able to enjoy the food in NYC. Part of my hobby is wandering around the supermarkets here and looking at all the food on display. It is rather sad really and I did the same in Rhodes when on holiday. Don't worry. I'm in a much better place than I was, but I'm still focused on food and starring at food related shops when out in public. I adore bagels and have the multi grain ones here with peanut butter and a banana each weekend. I'm so envious of you! Take good care and enjoy yourself. Ax

    Hi Meg, it's so good to see you're doing so well. I feel like I'm at a similar stage to you... I had severe anorexia as a teenager and had to be admitted to hospital and tube fed- after a few months I was then an outpatient and reintegrated to school etc. I did my A levels - did really well at uni etc but was never 'fully well'. By that I mean I did enough: I ate to be able to do activities etc, Ihad a boyfriend, did well in exams but food was always on my mind and by any means I never let myself just eat whatever I want. Over the past year I feel like I've made really good progress on that front and now eat so much more and intuitively. My mindset has completely changed (although my weight is still low unfortunately - but I have just been diagnosed with severe hyperthyroidism which is when you have a super fast metabolism). I'm on meds for that now but just really want the weight to come on. Anyway, after that preamble I just wondered if you had any thoughts on the media's portrayal of 'clean eating'. The reason I ask is because, although I'm doing so much better I'm still affected by trends such as this and although I know it's B**lS**t it still bothers me! X

    @megsyrecovery191

    Lucy Kingsland no, luckily clean eatings never appealed to me 😂 & it’s one of those things I now avoid learning anything about because I don’t need another obsession. I eat all sorts of junk food & it’s fine so I don’t want to start thinking it’s not & avoiding it. By the way, get your weight up. That’s been the biggest help for me in shifting my mindsets!

  • @lucykingsland1

    @lucykingsland1

I’ve gained weight. I knew it might be coming and I was prepared for comments. I’m not sure what to do to present it differently or to acknowledge in public to people that I’ve gained weight. If you know what I mean. It’s like, I don’t want to go back to restriction and rules. I just want to enjoy life. Great you went back to NYC. Thanks for sharing your story.

So I do these every day for now on and not feeling that much guilt, but I still try to compensate with healthier carb version lunch or dinner. Do I still challenge myself althought it feel comfortable or should I change this for like croisant,pizza slice sth. similar? I also feel like if I eat to much pastry then I wont get all the nutrition thaht I need to recover ( I ve also lost my period, and I am underweight). I love watching your video!!

    Ah, yummy! New York bagels. My father is from Brooklyn and when he first moved to Seattle in the late 60's he was appalled at the bagels there. (They have improved but still aren't quite up to NYC par.) Have you ever seen the movie When Harry Met Sally? Sometimes, when I am tempted to specify my order I tell myself I don't want to be a Sally (you have to have seen the movie to get the reference.) Thanks for being an inspiration!

    I feel you are still obsessed with food thoughts as is per normal in recovery (all the all about food you dont want to miss out on) recovery is when food becomes a non issue

    Dawny K agree. Sadly food is still probably my money dominant thought, getting less so, but still very important in my day. I’m sure a normal response for a body coming out of starvation though

    @@megsyrecovery191 yes which is why I said per normal. Tje hal would ultimately be to get to a place where food is not a constant thought. Seemingly impossible for a lot of those in recovery or fully active disordered eating
