I think it's crazy to think that Gurren Lagann isnt as popular as it used to be. Forget how old it is. Literally the biggest reason I watched Kill La Kill was cause it was coming from people who worked on Gurren Lagann. Just knowing that got the community excited for Kill La Kill and I think it really helped jump started Studio Trigger's fame in the community Also just realized Gurren lagann is as old as my little brother... Legit this is how I feel whenever anyone talks about how Serial Experiments Lain is lesser known/obscure/whatever. For me, it was one of the only series that the local video rental store had the whole thing of when I was like 12-14. During that time it was basically inescapable online in anime circles. Age is one of those things where even a few years makes a really big difference in what you do or don't know, I think.

I did a video about Haruhi a couple of weeks ago and the first thing I noticed when researching about it was exactly this situation, I was amazed by how little people had watched or even knew about it now a days, it used to be everywhere that you could never get away from it for too long, now... I found that extremely curious and made me think of how many huge and famous shows back in the day are now just a spec in the vastness of the community.

The Endless Eight still exists in public infamy, and I find that modern shows still make plenty of references to it

As a Gintama fan myself I don't really engage in the ratings debate because what's the point? Gintama fans are just really dedicated for their love of the series and we know the series isn't for everybody. With that said it's definitely a show you should at least try once with all preconceived notions you had removed.

The hell…I had no idea ANN had such a function. Sifting through their list, I was pleasantly surprised their top 100 still listed shows such as: Nana, Planetes, Honey and Clover, Aria, Kino’s Journey, Welcome to the NHK, Haibane Renmei, Whisper of the Heart, 5 Centimeters Per Second, Eve no Jikan, etc. Don’t get me wrong though - I’m not some cynic who thinks that every new &popular show is somehow automatically bad, since there absolutely is some great stuff coming out every year. But I have to admit it’s definitely refreshing to see a top 100 list that doesn’t consist of 50% titles that only came out in the past 5-10 years.

Eh one thing I'll give credit to Shonen anime now is I really think they make it more dangerous for characters so to say. In old 2000s anime nobody really dies. I mean a few do. But none of our main cast or in those shows they never really felt threatened. In some more modern shows they will kill off people. It just honestly makes the show better for me. So yeah. Well, ANN and MAL top 100 both have their weird stuff. Maria sama being one example, but I'm surprised to not see Sangatsu no Lion on ANN I use MAL and the score here is often a good indicator whether some thing is good or controversial, personally I find a lot of shows over 8,5 overscored, like with Made in Abyss S2 which is getting a lot of criticism in discussions but it is what it is And I'm watching Chihayafuru rn, at the end of S2, actually have dropped S1 like 2,5-3 years ago but back at it and I love it, though I have my complaints about some of the characters

@@lavq7000 I'm finally going back and watching all the anime "otaku classics" I never saw. The movie was fricking great. The show pissed me off so much though, I have very mixed feelings on it, and I watched it in order. I feel attached to the characters but frustrated by the lack of progression, poor writing, and bad production decisions. There was an incredible amount of potential, great setup, but just never headed in a concrete direction. Haruhi never changes and is a horrible person. The other two girls are walking archetypes with nothing more to their personality. Ones an infant and the other is a brick wall for most of the show. The *endless eight* has to be up there with some of the worst production decisions I've seen in anime, I'm surprised the shows ratings didn't go down the shitter over it + the episodes airing out of order. Like this is a TPN S2 level tragedy. People must've been losing their minds when it was airing. I almost get the vibe that Haruhi is just a meme and just like we don't talk about "fight club" we don't talk about how bad the show actually is and how the bad qualities are a net negative and outshine the redeeming qualities of the series. The dance in the opening is really mesmerizing, but no it doesn't make up for it. That aside, I also saw "Welcome to the NHK" a week later and that was actually a genuinely great show, very unique, with a powerful message and great psychological material going on. Up next is K-On and Lucky Star I guess. I better not be disappointed. But I probably will.

I don't like anime, but even I've watched, and rather enjoyed Haruhi. So I don't think it's niche as much as it is the passage of time. Niche would be when it is catered or made towards a specific subset of people.

It's not exactly anime-only but Criticker does have a superior rating system. e.g.: If a person only rates everything between 8 - 10 , 9 is basically his average score, or just 50% in percentile terms when adjusted relatively.

KyoAni shows always demand its audience to be emotionally mature to a certain extent to appreciate it. A plus if you have an eye for good animation. I watched Hibike when it first came out and it was mehhh. Now almost a decade later, it is very much on top of my list , alongside Violet Evergarden and Haruhi.

if you think of chihayafuru as a sports anime instead of a anything else the tags might say... some people might find it more digestible... just as a sports anime... i was gona say... i personally don't give 10's to anime/mangas like ever... since theres always something to improve or fix so like one piece and ttgl are a 9 for example gem's on their own right, chihayafuru is an 8 for me...

You are comparing Spotify to KZread. The vast majority of people use MAL to make their Anime List, it's in the name. The main focus of ANN is news and rankings of anime. You can use both, they are not mutually exclusive to one another.

What the purpose of watch in endless eight if the episodes is almost the exact samething. It the last episode that is important. I watch like 3 episodes then I quit. The manga that is based. The plots of the storyline is probably like 30 - 40 page. The melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya.

I feel like mal ratings is way over hated just because it's not 100 percent accurate which is stupid imo since like as everyone said its all subjective, people who is way to obsessed about scores and stuff are generally the one hating it, from my experience as a mal user who used it for a year, I understand how everything gets rated now shounen gets way more ratings than it should be(also popular shows) but I can still pretty much guess how good it will be, that goes for every genre as well for me and since I understand how this works I can still pick shows based on mal ratings without having missing out something(also it's not really that hard to understand how it usually works) though for me the main reason why I still used mal is because I can pretty much know any information about anime there whether it's voice actors, directors, author works and stuff Edit: also mal has more wider audience so it's better for me to know what generally the wider audience likes
