    You're the GOAT of slack pulling (and pausing). Hopefully the #shorts algo boosts the hell out of this

    I like this. It allows you reach maximum force production (takes 0.4 seconds) before you actually start the lift. Very nice. Problem with deadlift is indeed that you usually have a slump in your deadlift at the beginning, near the sticking point, because you have that force production delay problem - if you're aware of it, you know to just keep pushing and things will smooth out and the pull will push through. But the problem is that this kills your momentum. This technique demonstrated here will give you a better momentum throughout the lift. Very interesting.

    Thank you so much. I've been struggling with trying to keep my back straight/tight after "pulling the slack out". Slightly lifting the bar up made me lose a lot of power off the ground and my back form was breaking down.

    Hi Brendan, This series on true leveraged slack pulling is amazing, thanks so much for sharing and doing so in such detail and with the degree of articulation that you have. One question; what would you suggest as good assistance movements to help practice the ‘start’, when setting the back etc. strict rowing from the floor maybe? You’re 100% when you say the technique can’t be practiced slowly either. Once I just went into a natural tempo it became so much easier.

    This 2 part movement is very technical and difficult for me to perfect.

    I guess my question is how is this different than pulling the slack out of the bar during a regular deadlift?

    So this will essentially cheat the floor so your back doesn’t bleed as much because you leverage the weight against itself. The video explains well!

    I tried this today, fasted ive ever pulled 85-90% my 1RM. Its really hard to sit back into the lift after the pull. Something im definitely gonna have to work on. How would you train this technique? reset every lift and focus on ironing out flaws?

    Hey Brendan, I just finished my second run of the sumo submax DUP 12 week program. I love the program! I was curious, do you have recommendations on maxing afterward? If I want to max, should I deload after the last week or just take a couple days rest?

  • @BrendanTietz

    @BrendanTietz

    Yo glad you’re liking it! Unfortunately I designed it as an extreme base builder hence the really hard weekly progressions and volume. It’s not really built to peak and rather just train capacity like crazy! Although if you really had to what I recommend is running it and then second to last week reducing volume by 50% and rpe by a few points and then test the last week. But it won’t peak very well, it’s a base builder

    Hi Brandon. My knees tend to get in the way of the bar when I do this kind of tension pull. I set up about an inch away from the bar but when I use your technique and lean back I pull the bar into my knees and the lockout becomes a lot harder than usually. Any idea of how I am messing this up? I filmed myself on a stiff bar the bar. The bar stays bent (as much as I can bend it) all the way until the weight comes off the floor...

    Most likely you aren’t actually starting the pull with the wedge and break and starting behind the bar which causes you to hit the shins. You have to break the bar up on the way down right as you get into directly above the bar with shoulders. The key is thinking to wedge and press right when the hip shoot descends and start to almost initiate the lift and right when you get above the bar it’ll break off the floor without touching the shins. Look up my client Aubrey hogan on Instagram, I believe his name is Ahogan or something and he’ll be a good visual

    @@BrendanTietz hi Brandon. Thanks for taking the time to explain everything in detail. I think that is exactly what I’m doing wrong. I was trying to maintain the maximum amount of tension (in terms of bending the bar as much as I can) and then start to wedge under the bar on the way down. Somehow I thought I have to wait until my shins touch the bar again as a tactile cue/signal before initiate the lift/breaking the floor. I’ll check out your client. I’ll keep on practicing and go from there. Thanks again, you are a legend and your content is golden 🙏🏼

    Yes it is! You just can’t “attempt to lift” which some guys will rip a bar up to get aggressive and then slam it down again and that can be red lighted but not this
