    Grandpa was born 1900.. And 18 yrs old then.

    ​@@snowtrailstv Sorry, it was the France part that had me confused, and calling them commandos as the Royal Marries did not become commandos until WW2. Did he mean Belgium instead if France? If so, could it be the "Zeebrugge Raid" in 1918 he is talking about?

    @@snowtrailstv Then your Grandfather may have been a "Victoria Cross" recipient (UK military's highest award). The 4th Battalion Royal Marines was awarded the Victoria Cross for the action. In a mark of respect to those involved in the raid, the Royal Marines have never raised another 4th Battalion.
