Geezer, you're not doing bad at all! One of the takeaways from your video is that you're making decent money, and you're home every night. I look forward to seeing the journey.
As a guy less than a year away from retirement, I’m looking for a gig to keep me busy and focused. In my engineering field, I could contract and do well. But I don’t WANT to work 40 plus hours a week. I want something part time on MY time. I’ve just started investigating what I might do…but channels like yours do a real service for a guy like me. Thanks a lot.

I appreciate you being honest about the business. Everybody make it seems so easy. But just like you said it depends on where you live as to say how much loads are out there
Soon as I heard you say expenses are nothing more than a way to reduce your taxable income, I was like, yeah, this guy knows what he's talking about 😊 good info, great video.

Be careful, my dad worked for himself for about 20 years between 30 and 50 years of age., reducing his taxes and SS payments as much as he could legally because of the cost of being your own boss. At 51 he went and worked for a company full time. At 65 he retired only to find out how much that 20 years working for himself paying in the lease he had to in taxes and SS tax. That 20 years cost him dearly when it came time to retire and draw Social Security. The number of hours he had to put in per week to feed us, his family and keep everything running was way less than the 40 hours he worked for the other company in the end and he still ended up with more time for use and less headaches.
Unrelated but I love that you called your wife/girlfriend the queen of your life. Im definitely calling my wife that from now on.
Keep going geezer. Do YOUR business YOUR way but also take some time to investigate input from others. Learn from your mistakes and move forward but don't give up and you will (continue to) be successful. Let people know in your videos you are reporting what you are doing, what works for you, how things are going, and that you are not telling anyone how to run their business. If your business works for you (and your Queen) then that's what matters. Being at home every night is priceless, can't put a $ figure on that one.
grandfather recently gave me his 2008 Ford econoline 5.2 V8. I'm a university of South Carolina grad, sill located in the downtown columbia area. Would love to meet up for a drink and get some advice from you. Currently i work in IT, however i don't really believe in free time. I'm trying to use all my off days to do runs, Want to grow as many streams of income as possible this year. I predict a 2008 like economy coming soon, i want to be ready and stable when it comes.
I enjoyed your honesty so many talk up the transport industry which has cause a flooded market of hopes and dreams.. it's not a get rich quick type of life but I have done well the last 3 years with hard work and dedication
There is 'stuff' to learn when 'cut-throating' on these bid boards. I'm sure there are some drivers bidding away without a clear understanding how this works. And it's quite simple. The closer you live to a shipper, the cheaper your bid. And vice versa. You have to take into account dead/head miles, m.p.g. and the cost per gallon to make this work in your favor. Gig is making it work for him. Thanks for sharing!!!
As a truck driver who saw this video in my fyp. My best advice is to build relationships with shippers. All the carriers do it and charge more than any load board will pay. Load boards may have had 2-3 people take cuts off before posted. Most local drivers make around 1500 a week local while also working 12 hours an day. You are doing better than company drivers. Most businesses have 80% fail rate within 1st 3 years. Slow steady growth is best.
Thank you for this video. I’m retired (relatively young - 55) and looking for something to do that also makes me additional income (no one wants to lose money). Having a review of the business as realistic as this one is priceless, especially for a brand new person.

Some good information. My advice, I heard you say there's not a lot of opportunities for vans in your area. Try going on your load board and look for loads under box trucks, give them a call and ask if that load can fit in a your type of van. From my experience, when they book loads for a box truck, it's not even enough to fill a van. Just make sure you know the measurements of the space in the back. Hope this helps. Good luck out there

I’m looking for a side hustle too but , I can assure you from a person who got out of the landscaping business because of overhead, if you are anywhere near the word “bid”, you aren’t going to make any money. The rule for bidding is that you’re willing to do it for less than anyone else
Great video. Great information. With people under bidding loads eventually, they’ll be out of the business once they have a breakdown or any extra added expenses to their vehicle.
SUBSCRIBED 🤝🏻..been OTR with dispatchers for about 3 months now I’m a bit worn out.want to do local be home with family every night but not sure where to head towards because I live in Florida and from my experience Florida is bad when it comes to rate per mile..but once I heal from my ankle injury I’m giving it my all 💪🏻
You don’t have to go under there company. There are dispatcher I talk to that encourages you to have multiple companies up under your belt so that you have work daily. Local, regional and OTR. She told me to have different opinions for work. No force dispatch! You don’t have to put money down. Title 15 usc 1662b and 15 usc 1605 when you do a credit transaction cash is not involved. Please look it up king. Good content new sub!
Very good and informative video! I haven't secured a van yet, but will soon. This video definitely helps! Thank you!
As a former semi owner op, I would add that in semis, the public load boards are full of mostly bottom-of-the-barrel cheap freight nobody wants, sprinkled with halfway decent scraps from fleet contract overflows. The main use is for finding backhauls, or maybe as LTL with multiple loads in one vehicle at the same time, which is tough to set up. The money is in finding a good company with specialized contracts, or in landing your own regular contract as an owner op. Basic 53’ spotmarket dryvan freight (“dog food and toiletpaper” as they say in the industry) is not going to build a retirement for a one-truck owner op. The retirement money is in building a fleet of 5+ to 10+, or again, some kind of specialized freight. Or ideally, both. Translating that concept into cargovans, you’d either want to get into something specialized (such as DOT regulated, hazmat, medical, anything higher up than “regular-guy-with-a-regular-van”), or else build a fleet - ideally a specialized fleet, anything above the basic entry level. As an owner op, offer some kind of extra service. You can start super easy by always staying tucked in and wearing a safety vest. Don’t worry if nobody at the pickup is wearing one. If you’re the safest guy in the building, that right there can be a leg up above the basic level, at least in the eyes of the people who matter to your business and decide which cargo van to hire. 😃👍

Not even worth being an owner operator since the big boys are putting most of them out of business. The new ones and even the older ones with 5+ fleet are getting killed since the megas can take hits on shitty loads and the hits aren't even bad since they have drivers everywhere. Industry is changing being an owner op is 90% guaranteed to fail.

I've driven a lot of Lyft and Uber. The things you're talking about shows how much the overlap is. Can't take those dead miles for long trips where you're not gonna get anything back. It's a roll of the dice at best, total waste of time at worst. They tried to get me to drive someone from downtown Chicago to Milwaukee, 3 hour/184 mile round trip for $80 ($0.44 a mile - one way would be almost a dollar a mile). They were gonna charge the rider $280. I tried to contact the rider to work out a deal, because yeah, that's only $26/hr round trip, minus gas (prob about $30). That'd be $50 for a 3 hour 184 mile ride--aka H3LL NAW. Better to take the rides within your market, even if they're shorter, because you won't have as much dead mileage, if any at all. I try to explain ti to guys and they're like, "IT'S GUARANTEED MONEY!" Yeah, but you can't be driving a vehicle you probably financed or rented, pulling in $16/hr and $0.27/mile.
Good content, I got my DOT physical today and passed, getting closer to being ready to drive.

Highly recommend keeping stats so you can figure out your cost per mile. You must know your numbers so you can know when a load just isn’t worth it. You have to have maintenance costs, profit, and pay yourself and hopefully reinvest money towards your business.

Your video is much appreciated and I wish you the best of luc attaining your goal!
I’m starting new and I needed this.. thanks
You gotta be willing to hustle.... Also your main goal shouldn't be brokers, dispatchers, or even gigs... Your goal should be working with customers directly... Saving them money and putting more in your pocket while building a partnership... Ive been a broker for 7 years and know the ins/outs of the industry and ill be jumping into a Cargo van within the next few months. Also look into medical and auto parts transport locally... Big big business. If you want to go over the road make sure your van is set up to do so... Over the road can get expensive in smaller costs you take for granted sleeping at home.
Super informative keep posting keep striving
Loved the segment! I’m looking into driving but, do a lot of research first before I make up my mind. These numbers help out. Thank you.

What a great and informative video. As someone looking to start out studying this business I appreciate it. I live in a little town in NC about 1h30 from Chattanooga, TN. Is it much worse to find loads because I live in a small town? I was thinking that there couldn't be many options to work with cargo van because I live in Murphy, NC. Hopefully I'm wrong.
Your payment on the van and insurance are fixed costs. All other expenses are tied to the miles driven - especially gas. As long as you are covering your fixed nut anything after that is mostly about taking loads that fit your criteria for when you want to drive and rate.

Funny thing for me is that none of my surviving cousins, well, maybe one, would make any attribution of me for anything.
Just going to add to what you're doing... I own a tractor trailer and my own trucking company and am thinking about adding a cargo van to my company to supplement the company's cash flow when the bigtruck is parked... I've done cargo van work before years ago as a driver for a fleet owner with Panther... The key to making more money is to try and cut out the middle man when you can... I'd say get some business cards made up with your basic information and try to make contact with a logistics manager at some of the places you've done loads for so you can communicate with them on future orders...I know that sounds easier than it looks, but it can pay off to have local businesses work directly with a local to move their orders versus those shippers calling up some app company to place their shipment in some que... I like the videos by the way...
so Unc stays local and is happy with making $100 a day. nothing wrong with that. i can respect it.

You sir made me a subscriber. I just got in the business and did completed the LLC and DOT, BOC3, UCR as of yesterday and now shopping for insurance but I hold up on purchasing a van as I am looking at the rates and the carriers' choices to contract with them. I might go back to 9-5 to save some money and do the cargo van as passive income and chose rental since purchasing and leasing are a bit much due to the current rates and the markets. What is your thought on that? Still doing research and learning everything I can before I fully dive in...
