My 5 Tips for *PEACE* in a BIG CICHLID TANK!

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Why don't my big cichlids kill each other? How are those new additions to the 300 gallon all still alive? Here's my theory, my 5 tips on why my big cichlids don't kill each other and why there's finally peach in my cichlid tanks. It wasn't always like that. What changed? Let's talk about it!
Do you keep big aggressive cichlids? What's been your experience and successful actions in curbing aggression?

All excellent points, and 100% accurate. Something I think you're not giving yourself enough credit for is also keeping fish who are compatible and removing the ones who aren't, quickly. As much as I wanted to see you succeed at introducing the red terror into the community predator tank, when it showed signs that it wasn't going to work, you didn't hesitate to pull the problem fish out. You've done the same thing multiple times in the African tank, I think the most recent being Skittles. There's nothing wrong with throwing ideas at the wall and seeing what sticks, but you have to have a Plan B... and sometimes a Plan C and occasionally a Plan D... for when things go sideways. I applaud you for that.

You’re right, my re-home the problem fish FAST policy has played a big part in getting me here.

Beautiful fish, Ben. I'm glad to see it all pan out wonderfully. I always suggest plenty of water movement as well for mitigating aggression, esp with territorial attitudes.

Hi Ben, I also have a 300 gallon African Cichlid tank 96x24x31. I put 50 male juvenilesin it a year ago. All purchased at the same time from the same place. Light are only on a couple hours a day with plenty of flow. I have not lost any of them and they get along very well. There is even a flew doubles in there. Most are 5 inch range but some are 7 or 8 ish.

As crazy as this sounds, I recently put a Sicce Xstream Wi-Fi controllable powerhead in my Malawi mixed cichlids 90 gallon; the aggression has completely changed. Also, I catch several of the cichlids swimming in the stream of the powerhead.

Yes, water flow is mentioned in the video and I too think it can make a difference. Maybe it's a distraction or maybe they are too tired from fighting the current to fight each other, LOL!

After 25 years attempting "community" aquariums with all categories of Africans the only thing that has worked for me is having them with larger Central and South American cichlids. The variables that seemingly trigger a "cage fight" arise without warning and I found to be uncontrollable. The nature of the fish

Hey Ben, Could the cause of your calm tank have something to do with the majority of your African Cichlids being different species or sub species? They may not see the other fish as competition. I've kept African Cichlids (haps and peacocks) for about 15 years in my 340gal main tank. I've tried all of the popular solutions to combat aggressive behavior, and adventually, they return to chasing, nipping, and killing. I think I may be done with African Cichlids in the near future. Their just not relaxing to look at anymore. Maybe I'll switch to Fancy Goldfish 😊.

That certainly has something to with it. Hang in there. You might be one jerk fish removal away from peace.

I have 2 cichlids that I have to take out. Especially the one, chases all of them forcing them to the top and hiding in the corners.
