ADVERTISING
As content creation is our business and how we earn our living you will see advertising in our content from time to time in different forms:
We are very selective about what brands we work with on paid/sponsored content creation and as a rule we don't work with any brand that we don't already or wouldn't spend our own money on. We are incredibly proud of all our brand partnership content and it will always be disclaimed in the most transparent way possible so you know exactly what is with 'AD' on screen and in the description box. If the entire video is an 'AD' this will be in the title of the video.
Because we don't work with a large amount of brands on sponsored content we do rely on our KZread ad revenue. Any adverts you watch during the duration of our videos will earn us a small percentage of 'ad revenue' from KZread and we really appreciate you watching the adverts in full (and not skipping them), but only if and when you can. We also know that time is precious so no pressure.
We also use 'Affiliate Links' in the description boxes below our videos and if you make a purchase via these links we will earn a small percentage of commission depending on the sale amount. Not all links are affiliate links but just assume they are.
Any items/links marked with '[AD - Pr products]' are products which have been 'gifted' from the respective brands without a contract for sponsored content. This is still classed as a form of advertising because nothing is ever "free", brands are gaining exposure to our audience by us featuring them, so these items are marked as 'AD-Pr product' in the description box but we are under no obligation to feature these items. And as with our paid content, we never accept gifting/pr products from brands that we don't already or wouldn't spend our money on. If we have received a press discount on anything featured this will also be disclaimed.

All 5 principles are spot on. I lnow you have mentioned before, that once you have your colour palate, have a day of try on, mix and match, get the full wear out of an item. I tend to think of 5 outfits at least with one new item that I can create with my existing wardrobe. It really does help you stop waisting money, and feeling a sense of an investment purchase. I'm 57 and just learn more from you than any other influencer. Especially ones my own age 😮😊 Thank you ❤

Yes!!! 0:00 Intro 0:43 First: I don't follow or buy trends 2:20 Second: I invest in my basics 4:00 Third: I stick to a specific colour palette 6:08 Fourth: I prioritize comfort and feeling confident 8:22 Fifth: I care for what I own 10:00 Outro Very happy with my wardrobe as well -- feeling content is everything.

I do follow these rules myself and I find them quite useful! I also have an extra rule: when buying something, I try to rest the idea for a few days or weeks just to be sure that I am not buying on a whim. I always ask myself “do I need it?” and “am I sure I will keep wearing this for a long time?”. All these tips have definitely helped me curate my wardrobe and get rid of the feeling of “I have nothing to wear” once and for all 😃

Emma, I'm so glad I found you, must be over 4 years ago now. I can't believe that I didn't even own a single plain t-shirt and I used to buy items because I 'didn't have something in rhat colour '. Your advice has completely changed my wardrobe and I love it now. I have so many pieces that mix and match and feel so much more polished and confident in rhe higher quality items that I now possess. Thank you, thank you, thank you ❤❤

I so appreciate the transparency, Emma. There can be this frenzied feeling of “get your perfect wardrobe RIGHT NOW!!”. Or even that you can figure out your own style quickly. It is a process that takes as long as it takes. I did an overhaul of my wardrobe a few years ago and began this process of curating only what I love and what works for me. I did buy quite a few things over the course of a few months but then didn’t buy anything for over a year. Not intentionally as a “No Buy” year. I just paused every time I thought about purchasing something and went through my criteria first and if it didn’t meet those criteria, I walked away. The result was, I just didn’t buy anything. Having that amount of time to really get to know the wardrobe I now have, waiting through those emotional impulses to get something just for the novelty high, I’ve compiled a list of the few items I know truly are missing and that I have consistently been drawn to. Refusing to budge on quality has been the real game changer for me. I no longer “make do”. I’d rather wait and save and search for deals on a good quality piece than assuage the desire for immediacy. The mark that I have indeed made a fundamental change is that I no longer buy cheap shoes lol. Shoes are my absolute weakness. It’s the only item that trends have massive influence over me. I want them ALLLLLLLL 😩😂 But I know now which ones I actually wear and I know the difference being comfortable makes to my overall confidence and I won’t budge on it. You have been a very good influence on me and I appreciate it so much ❤

Especially as our shape changes as we move on in years and we also generally start to appreciate our uniqueness, it feels so good to celebrate that sense of arriving into our own style! 💃 Also appreciate your honesty and down to earth approach. I'm definitely with you Emma on feeling comfortable and confident, two of the most important aspects for me in able to get on with my day wherever it may take me without having to worry about what I'm wearing. I love feeling happy in my clothes and thinking about the things to wear that make me feel good, even if I'm out walking with my dogs/cleaning/ exercising. Feeling good in your clothes is such a mood booster ❤ Also caring for things, folding them carefully or hanging them and putting them away, definitely helps them looks good and last longer. Also colour pallettes help our lives become easier as we can always put something together quickly without thinking ' but does that go with that?' 😂 Great tips Emma 😊

Been loving your videos this year, I’ve finally got in to building my capsule wardrobe after getting sick of the dresses I was wearing daily for work and constantly looking for new ones. I started with 3 pair of wide leg trousers, a couple of cashmeres of Vinted and going with those. I need some more basic T,s and I have a Vinted trench on the way. But even with the few pieces I have I’ve been enjoying getting dressed each morning for work. Making sure I add my necklace and belt just to add that extra touch.

Great video, Emma! Funny, my husband and I were just talking about this sort of thing yesterday. I taught him to buy the good quality basics over the years, and now we both have pretty solid wardrobes! I’ve inherited a lot of things from my mum, and it’s such a joy to see how many of them are so current looking, and fit into my wardrobe! Clearly, she taught me well. 🥰 I greatly appreciate you encouraging us to shop wisely, and feel fabulous…and comfortable…in our clothes! 👋 to Simon!!

Thank you so much for sharing, and I especially enjoyed your points on taking care of your garments. I still do find that after wearing an item that you bought at a "lower" price point, does tend to lose its form after a few washes, even if I care very much for that particular item. But I guess that that's what you get when actually buying quality items. Things where love and care actually gives you wearability in return.

I completely agree with all principles but especially appreciate #4. I’m grateful for reaching the age of 60 for many reasons and finally do not feel the need to try too hard by following the latest trends. I am now drawn towards an updated and modern take on casual-classics. I still want to be stylish but also feel comfortable and look timeless. That includes wearing my converse sneakers with a “soft suit” look. 😊

In my opinion trends or a source of inspiration & therefor not just to follow. On the other hand: sometimes, specially when you know your own "likes & don't likes" there will be a trend that has written your name all over it . Like the chunky boots (from Dr Martens to lun Bottega) & bc you feel like you wayyyyy before it became a trend you are on with this one .yk? ✌🏻🪻

These principles are so spot on! I dont follow trends as such, but I am aware of them, especially as my colour palette is navy, red, most clear blues, and ivory, so some items are hard to find when these colours aren't trending (there's never as much choice in navy as there is in black, fo example). And whereas in my youth, I may have felt confident in heels, like you, comfort has become way more important to me. I've found out what basics work for me (I don't own a black blazer or plain white tee, but I do own a tan trench and navy chelsea boots), and am willing to invest in good quality versions. I've always tried to maintain my clothes by debobbling sweaters or re-heeling shoes. What I need to work harder on, is letting those things go that don't work for my lifestyle - I already make sure new purchases that may be bought with occaision dressing in mind, can also be dressed down for every day, but I maybe need to de-clutter some of those things that don't get worn often enough. I love how your style has changed over the years (I think one of the first YT videos I watched was one showing your collection of handbags, sharing their pros and cons - the Chloe Faye comes to mind here). We all have our style evolution, and it's always interesting to see and take inspiration from others.

Great video Emma and agree 💯 percent on all your points. We all evolve and go through changes, looking back at things we wore 20 years ago is crazy, but like you say it’s experimentation and wearing the fashion at the time. Unless a trend takes my fancy or actually suits me I won’t follow it, In fact the rebel in me thinks I don’t want to wear what everyone else is wearing 🙊 I am glad that looser 90’s style jeans are in fashion though, love a baggier jean, here for the comfort very important 😉 Your advice has helped me curate a wardrobe I’m still working on, but investing in quality leather bags and shoes, learning more about the best fabrics to splurge on and also fashion sustainability has been so so helpful. Buying classic items that I can wear for years to come that will fit into my wardrobe and also your 3 colour rule when dressing. I also started shopping secondhandbutgrand thanks to you and discovered some real gems. Your advice on using sites like Vestiaire etc have been amazing. Finally side note your hair is freaking amazing in this video 😘

I don’t consider comfort a style criterion, it’s the first hurdle before I consider any style aspects. If an item is unlikely to be uncomfortable, I never take it any further than that, it’s just disqualified from any consideration. The principal reason for dropping or filtering out items is synthetic fiber content, if possible I try to not even look at them. It can be annoying as even searches for “100% genuine mulberry silk” on websites still bring up hundreds of polyester “satin” pieces. I only buy synthetics if they won’t touch my skin, like for rainwear. Footwear is by far the trickiest for me, I’ve bought many pairs of shoes that seemed comfortable at try-on, only to find they’re miserable after a minute or two of walking. I have a dismal success rate with shoes, only about a third do I end of keeping as wearable. Boots are easier because I can size up without them actually coming off my feet as skimpier shoes can if oversized.

We have very different styles. I've tried the basic colour palette with clothing, and found myself bored. I think its just the phase im going through, but I'm having so much fun with colour. But the point of cohesion is valid. I have three very different aesthetics. Whiskey grandpa (button down shirts, and pleated trousers) 80s mom on the go (vintage mom jeans and cashmere). And edgy teenage boy ( modern slouchy denim and band ts) One common thing we do have is a sort of androgynous way of dressing, i take a lot of inspo from those types of looks for sure.

@@EmmaHill ha ha 😂 🤣 ha 😆 🤣 That's a good 👍🏻 one! But it can be another color (orange , not neon orange but true orange or a tone between grass green and forest green, ...) it's just the idea : • simple •minimum color but impact full •on budget if needed or not •versatile

Mass-apparel market trends are created by brands’ designers specifically to utilize cheap synthetic fibers by making them “trendy”. Every season we see these, this season it’s sheers, lace and mesh fabrics, all 100% polyester. Only those better, often smaller, brands use natural-fibers, so they’re the only ones that get my business!

Forgot this season’s “satin” polyester trend, it’s ubiquitous!

Hi Emma, I follow your principles, but I'm often not feeling confident due to fit. I'm 5'7" and uk size 10 so sounds like that would be straight forward. Unfortunately it's not. I'm a jeans and T-shirt person. Even if I find something that fits well and say for example I want the same jeans in a different wash, the sizing is off (same brand same size) I've found this with all brands that I have tried that sizing is so inconsistent!

You’re not alone, I think regardless of height most women find inconsistencies with sizes these days 🙃 It’s definitely a lot of trial and error but once you find ‘the one’ it’s worth the effort 🙌🏼

How do you wash your cashmere?

My washing machine has a gentle wool wash and I've washed all my cashmere jumpers in it - even the ones that say dry-clean only! - as it's only a 40 minute cycle at 30*C with a 800 spin speed. I always use a little Woolite (they don't need much), which smells lovely. Can do 3-4 at a time. Dry flat afterwards - I spread mine over my airer. You can put a towel underneath to help it stay flat and not get marked from the airer. However I would say that cashmere - like most wool - doesn't need washed very often, being a natural product. So don't wash unless marked/smelly!

Emma how can I dress like a classic looking like you in a humid tropical country where I can't wear blazers or jackets. Only pants or shorts with tshirts no blazer then it looks boring

Maybe try a linen or cotton shirt over the top instead of a blazer. It can gave a similar effect but is much lighter for hot weather.

Don't forget to accessorize! Makes all the difference in the hotter months for me, also look at light breathable fabrics in structured silhouettes, or like a t-shirt with an interesting detail to make it feel fresh and you.

One of your principles is not to follow a trend just because it is a trend and I try to do that too. But how do you manage that, even after this decade of construction and subsequent decades, your clothes don't look like they were from yesterday, but rather contemporary? Not trendy, but in the here and now?
