I couldn’t help but thinking you definitely need to edit this puppy. Cut it up and add an original score with the theme song entitled “Falling off the Mantle,” or maybe “Falling for Mantles,” playing throughout! Thank you, Dave, for treating us to some very intriguing Mickey Mantle eye candy. Hearty congratulations again for assembling a very distinguished array of Mantle masterpieces. I have to challenge you on your over-emphasis of the off-centerdness on your gorgeous 1951 Bowman rookie. As you correctly point out, the print registration is spot on just right, while the colors are rich and vibrant. I will always recall a poster on the PSA chat forums who challenged us all to remember that these are picture cards first. We often get too hung up on the centering, almost to the exclusion of the more vital, central issue---what does the picture look like? Short answer-----the picture on your 1951 Bowman Mickey Mantle "looks like a million!". As for your other four "TOP 5"----they look super duper also. Although you did not include your over the top beautiful 1969 Topps Super Mick which I noticed you have in MINT, I believe that's definitely an underrated card. The ignorant dismiss it because nearly every example is EX-MT or better. What they fail to take into account is the fact the '69 Supers were not sold to the public, save for a few Brooklyn candy shops that the head of Topps product development liked to use to test new Topps products. Well, by 1969-72, Topps began using a few selected dealers to test their new wares, people like Bruce Yeko, Stan Martucci, Irv Lerner, and Bill Haber. Mr. Haber was working at Topps in 1972, when I met him at the huge Midwest Sports Convention in Troy, Michigan. Mr. Haber had brought a satchel full of 1969 Topps Super complete sets, I suppose to defray his expenses at the show. This kind man showed me the Supers, and I had never seen them before. Looking through a set, I came to card number 23, and silently inhaled. It was Mickey Mantle, and one of the prettiest Micks I'd ever laid eyes on! I asked him his price----$30 a set. Since that came to the price of 2 complete 1972 Topps sets, I thought it was a bit much. Bill patiently asked me what I thought a set was worth. I responded, "Twenty dollars." He said that was fine, and I walked away a very satisfied customer. Remember, this was the summer of '72, I'm at my first convention, and I didn't know jack about the 1969 Topps Supers. Bill Haber's thirty-dollar price was probably fair, but what did I know? Eventually I bought a Mantle that looked as nice as the one in my set. In time, it graded out a SGC 96 MINT. So, why do I think the '69 Topps Supers are very underrated? Overall, few sets were ever sold. Those that got sold were sold to serious adult collectors who knew how to take care of their cards. We did not have the means to protect cards that today's collectors do, but we had a few tricks that worked---my set was wrapped with a single wide paper strip taped together. I wrapped it in saran wrap, and rarely let myself look at them. I knew handling causes wear. Eventually, one of my Mantles was graded..... Us adult collectors took care of our Supers, so that's why most are graded MINT. Be that as it may, the overall total submitted is absolutely minuscule compared to mainstream Topps. For example, as of 7/18/2023, there been 162 Topps Super Mickey Mantles submitted to PSA. Of that, they've graded 10 as Gem Mint 10s; 58 PSA 9 MINTs, 47 PSA 8 MN/MTs, and just 9 PSA 7 Near Mints. I reiterate, we adult collectors were the original owners of these scarce gems, and we took extra good care of them. Now let's look at the 1969 Topps---for the easier yellow-background last name, there's been 8,836 examples submitted, resulting in just 2 GEM MINT 10s, 64 MINT 9's and 520 8's. The very scarce white-letter last name has 1,175 examples submitted, with only 1 10, 4 MINT 9s, and 45 8's. Most collectors collect the 1969 Topps set, and there's a substantial number collecting the basic regular mainstream Mantle cards. Yet, there's plenty of dudes doing the PSA Master Set Registry of Mickey Mantle. The value of a graded MINT 1969 Topps Super Mickey Mantle ought to be substantially higher. There's just so few of them out there, and now you know why most are in high-grade condition. Well, I hope you didn't mind my using your video comment section as a diving board to jump onto another one of your great Mantle cards. Have a great time at the show. I hope you find a nice nifty surprise for yourself! --- Brian Powell

@@Bluejacket66 Hi, Dave. Yes, I think it was early this year I watched your video, "THE RAREST VINTAGE MICKEY MANTLE CARD". The video was well done, but I didn't "buy" the message. Regardless, it is beautiful, and I know jolly well there are collectors who take a deep interest in "work in progress" pieces. Sure, they ARE rare, just not terribly important. Still, they make a worthwhile display and conversation piece. Fortunately, you also own a PSA 9 MINT 1969 Topps Super Mantle; I quickly noticed it in this video. Now, please don't get me wrong. I appreciate those "works in progress". For maybe 20 years, I owned the progressive color proofs of the 1961 Bazooka Roger Maris panel. I wish I'd kept it, just for the education it gave me. I sold it when you couldn't get much for it; even today it wouldn't bring much. However, the point is those progressive proofs were fascinating, just as your '69 Topps Super proof of Mr. Mantle is! Take care, my friend; wish I could join you roaming the floor at Rosemont. -- Brian

I couldn’t help but thinking you definitely need to edit this puppy. Cut it up and add an original score with the theme song entitled “Falling off the Mantle,” or maybe “Falling for Mantles,” playing throughout! I really love the color and registration on your ‘51 Mantle, it’s incredible. I’m a real sucker for that fresh ink look, the ‘51 Bowman’s really seem to shine when it comes to that.

-- Brian
