My 3rd Month Selling Digital Downloads on Etsy (RESULTS) 💸 & beginner Etsy shop owner tips

These are my results after having my digital downloads Etsy shop open for 3 months! This month, I hit a huge milestone in my Etsy journey and I’m so excited to share it with you!
In this video, I share my 3rd month on Etsy results, what worked for me and what didn’t, and I also answer some FAQ questions like how I promote my Etsy products, what’s my shop, do I use Canva free or pro, and more.
I'm a beginner at Etsy (this is the FIRST Etsy shop I created from scratch), so this video is a realistic summary of what you might expect if you start an Etsy shop as a beginner.
I hope this video inspires you to start your own Etsy journey or to continue growing your own shop.
Let's goooo! Leave a comment if you have a question or if you are also working on your Etsy shop!
"What is your niche? What is your shop?" 👉 I have decided not to reveal my shop on KZread, mainly because I don't want my KZread audience to click into my shop, not buy anything, and make Etsy think that people don't like my shop items (bad for Etsy algorithm). My niche is Canva templates for a specific kind of business owner (I won't reveal what kind of business owner.)

It is hard! But what I find so fascinating is that we're all coming from very different backgrounds, busy with a bunch of other stuff and full time jobs, but for some reason Etsy caught our attention. I'm currently trying to view my Etsy store holistically and leverage more from what I already have. I realised that I'm heavily undercharging for lotsss of content, so working to split it in into separate listings that can offer more to customers looking for a specific solution. This means that I'll be able to get to 8 - 9 listings in total on my store by mid March.

love the video and the passion you have for your store! Discount sales are fantastic as you are creating that supply and demand draw, another sale style is "buy 2 get 1 free" etc as it value based sale rather than a price driven sale. In turn you would get $24 in profit instead of possible losing >40% and it creates GREAT VALUE for the customer so the are more likely to purchase/leave good review. Instead of buying one template they are more likely to spend a bit more and get two because of the perceived value. Couple that with a timed sale its a solid combo. keep up the awesome videos and cant wait to see where you store goes.
@DinaLu
Жыл бұрын
Thanks! ♥️Glad you enjoyed the video! That's true, a buy 2 get 1 free sale is good, but not sure if that's necessarily a good strategy for my Etsy shop. Most people just buy one item only. And I personally think they don't really need 2-3 of the items. So I think depends on the shop!
EDIT: LOL, when I made this comment I was like 60 seconds into your video but now I'm 13 minutes into it and you basically said the exact same thing I said in the comment about KZread skewing results if you were getting sales from subscribers/supporters/people who just happen to like you. Great Minds, haha. --- Original Comment --- I just started watching your videos a little bit ago (w/ month 1, then month 2, now this one) and I like how you didn't reveal your shop because it'd probably skew the results a little bit... like people who just like you from KZread could have been helping and purchasing things if they knew so these feel like even more real-world results than otherwise, I'll keep watching the next several after this since they're helpful and I like seeing the progress... I've been trying to motivate myself to open an Etsy shop for literally years, I've had an account forever but never nudge myself into actually taking the steps and sticking with it for enough months to get stuck on doing it. Hopefully these videos w/ realistic results will finally give me the nudge I need finally, good stuff!

Aww hahaha thanks for the "edit"! I'm glad that my progress videos are helping and motivating you! Yeah I didn't want my KZread audience to skew the results, but I also don't want copycats haha. Cheering you on with your Etsy shop! 💪
Having a sale every day will teach your audience to wait for a sale. High-quality products are not usually associated with discounts. You don't see high-quality or luxury items on sale often, if ever. Doing so ruins the brand. As for the video, this is the first one I've seen from you. Great editing style!

You are correct for something like Louis Vuitton, but as for 'normal' things.. people LOVE sales and will make that product THRIVE! Even Elon finally gave a discount on Teslas. But I get ya.. I have owned several profitable businesses for 30+ years, have always been on the higher side with my prices in every business and have rarely ever given a discount.. but on the right platform it is the right thing to do and that's what this case is.

I want to offer advice to Dina and anyone else selling on Etsy… I have been selling for years (at over $100k a year). Your conversion rate is the most important stat to look at. Anything over 2% is fantastic! Etsy has become very unpredictable over the last 2 years but January is often one of the busiest months. I recommend setting up your payments to be deposited daily because numerous times - Etsy has had an issue where the payment doesn’t go through and people are left scrambling. It’s not really worth it to only spend $1/day on ads unless you have very low competition.

Hey Dina! Thanks for sharing your experience and tips with us! Lots of great info here! I'm a graphic designer, and opened my own Etsy shop a month ago to sell some POD shirts. I spent a little over a month researching other shops, trending products, popular niches, Everbee stats, tags etc., and of course designing my own creations, with high quality mock ups. I feel every move I've made has been very calculated with high quality in mind, while making designs that are different and stand out from the rest. Unfortunately, I haven't made a single sale yet. I'm keeping positive, though I did have a few down days. I'm considering selling some SVG files that I'll create for other sellers, hoping the lower cost can help me roll in some sales, get some reviews and build some trust for my shop. I'll keep you posted! Thanks again! Subscribed!

@@DinaLu Hi Dina! Thank you very much for the kind words and motivation, it means a lot to me! You're totally right, I'm definitely going to change things up a bit, offer some new things and see what sticks. Since I started running ads ($1.00), I'm getting over 100 views a day, with a couple days having over 300 views. Click rate average overall is 0.9% with a couple designs I have doing 1.9% at 162 views and another has 0.9% at 639 views. The 3% click rate design has 234 views. Which I think is pretty good! What do you think? I think no one trusts my 0 sale/review store at the moment lol. I hands down agree with you, coming from a background in sales - cheaper is not always better. That was one obstacle i faced in sales, but I killed it anyways. When you believe in the product you are selling, and believes it has value you can sell to anyone. However an online shop is a lot different lol can't really have a convo to try and say your products, unless they message you. I personally tend to buy higher priced items.

Yup!
1. I wouldn't reveal what your Etsy shop is on KZread. Most of your audience is here for education and your competition will try and steal your ideas. They snoop around silently. 2. Keep in mind having a sale all the time will teach your audience on Etsy to never want to pay full price. I understand the scarcity mentality but you are also training your audience to never pay full value of your product. Keep going! Good luck!

I wouldn't concern myself with people seeing my Etsy shop much, there are so many in depth guides that if they don't get the information from you, they will get it from someone else. Of course since she is selling template's, she would want to keep the actual content of those items private. Definitely makes sense for her to not link her shop though since she wants to see how much she grows on Etsy alone.

I’m not sure if the daily-sale strategy is a good idea! It might seem like it! But if you want to list your item at 12$ because you want your shop to be more “premium”, than having a 40% sale might not be the best imo Think about physical sales in a store (like walmart). Usually sales are for products that need to be sold faster. So either out of season, out of style, a bit ruined, going out of stock, etc. I think, for what you want to create as a brand (a premium-feel), having constant sales is undercutting your product value. Make a sale every once in a while, maybe once a month, but not every single day (in my opinion)
@DinaLu
Жыл бұрын
Hmmm that's fair, but I feel like on Etsy it's different than a physical store. It's a completely different kind of shop and even though I want to be more "premium," I still think it's worth it to have sales more often than not so that it creates urgency.... but I could be totally wrong hahaha!
@feliciagrande128
Жыл бұрын
@@DinaLu i do get where you come from with the urgency mindset! However! If you have a daily sale, it doesn’t create urgency because people know, whatever the day, they’ll be a sale! It’s not like you do it every once in a while where people have your product in their favs and they see a great sale! You are more likely to sell it then, I think :)

HI Dina Lu, your sharing is so helpful for a new starter. Where can I see your Etsy shop? How many shops do you have till now
@DinaLu
Жыл бұрын
Thank you! I haven't revealed my shop on KZread/social media. I just have the one shop.
It's against the law in the U.S. to have a permanent sale. It's not a sale if you never list the items to sell at regular prices. The "sale price" is just your normal price. So it's considered "deceptive pricing".

Thanks for sharing that, I'm going to look into this more
Congrats on your progress! May I ask does it matter to show where your shop is located when you’re selling digital or POD (especially for those aren’t in the US)?
Thank you so much for sharing this! I'm on Etsy for quite a while and I am still not making sales.. :(( I was wondering if you have any tips on SEO and maybe some tips on naming your products...Thanks in advance

You should track "items sold" instead of bulking it into "orders" which could show you another stat/metric

What products you deal in? How to make them? A particular category products etsy shop or variety products etsy shop?
Been tracking your progress since month 1 and how exciting!! With Canva templates, is it possible to use graphics that you have bought a commercial license for? Will the customer be able to see it? I’m worried they might not be able to see (like when using Canva pro elements)
@DinaLu
Жыл бұрын
I personally don't add Canva Pro elements to my Canva templates because I don't want to force my Etsy listing buyer to get a Pro license! But I have seen some Etsy shops that specifically tell the customer that they need a Pro license to use the template.. so it's up to you!

Nope! You can use a free Canva account and still create a template link!

I wanted to ask, I'm also going to start selling digital cards and i use canva Pro... So is it lik my client's shud pay for the cards which contain the pro elements.... Please do reply 😭
Hi Dina x I been loving watching your little series 🫣 what is a niche by the way? Does it mean you have a certain style for your store,,,? I’m still pretty new to Etsy. I am sticking to paintings, digital images and digital prints is that all too much? I think it all kinda links to each other in a way. 😅
@DinaLu
Жыл бұрын
Thank you so much, so glad to hear that! A niche basically means a specialization in something specific. So I wouldn't say it's really a style, but a set of products for a specific audience, or a specific product for a more general audience
Thank you for this Awesome

I’ve been thinking about giving Etsy a try, but get stuck overthinking and postponing it 😮💨. Also, I am concern about some legal aspects, if you or any experienced Etsy users can shed some light: 1. There won’t be any legal conflicts when using customized canva templates and their illustrations, right? I’ve heard mixed opinions. 2. For tax purposes 🇨🇦, do you sell under your freelance persona or do you have a registered company name? if not, when is it a good idea to transition? 3. Is there a way to protect your original templates (if you make them from scratch or pay an illustrator) besides watermarks? Thanks 🙏🏼

1. You can use the stuff on canva but only if the end product is different from what they provided (so it's kind of a gray area I believe)... Many Etsy forums discuss the details 2. I have a registered corporation in Canada for all my business stuff. I used to be a sole proprietorship but then switched to corporation later on (many aspects to consider, useful to talk to an accountant first) 3. For me, I don't really...At least I don't right now for the templates I've designed
Hi Dina, I am happy about your new shop's progress. I want to say a few things about my occasion; the pricing is confusing! I've had an Etsy store since December 2022. I prefer to compete on quality rather than price, but there are some stores that produce personalized artwork and offer it for as little as 4-5 dollars! This is so absurd. Reviews and sales for these kinds of cheap stores are raving. So it forces me to do it that way. Otherwise, I lose traffic to my shop! Additionally, I believe that customers look at reviews first. For example, I have 77 reviews, and all of them are five stars. However, other well-known stores have thousands of positive reviews but also very lesser quality designs. Any suggestion about the strategy for this situation?
@DinaLu
Жыл бұрын
Sadly, my niche does this too. I see people selling things for $3 and they get a lot of reviews, while I'm here selling it for $10+. Congrats on your 77 5-star reviews - that's amazing!!! I'd say keep doing what you're doing. Getting so many sales and reviews with a 3-month old Etsy shop is amazing already. If you believe your products should be at a certain price, keep them there. Don't lower your price just because others are doing it :)
Keep going!

hi Dina, i really need your opinion on ads. its my first time making ads, should i spend my budget on etsy ads only or should i divide half my money for etsy ads and the other for google ads. thank you, im loving ur videos so much

Hey Dina!! Another awesome video thank you for making it!! I wanted to ask you since I am also in Canada-- have you opened a gst/hst Business Number or anything, is that something you would suggest to do after your first few sales or can the profit go into a personal account?? Thanks for any insight you can provide! :D
@DinaLu
Жыл бұрын
Thanks!! I am registered for GST / HST, but if you check the rules, you don't have to do it right away. Once you surpass a certain amount of sales within a certain time frame (I don't remember what it is now) you must register for gst. It's always best to have a separate bank account for business purposes.
Hey Dina this is awesome! Love the sheet also. Might I ask, how you track the amount of listings uploaded each month? Do you do this manually? Thanks in advance!

Hi Dina, I recently started following you, I got a better idea, and also made me realize it is super important to study the market first. Could you give which platform for finding a niche? I was using Erank but I realized the number they give you is inaccurate.

I actually didn't really use any market research tools when I first started my shop since I was pretty confident about my niche just from looking at the Etsy platform itself. There are a lot of market research tools - check out some youtube videos maybe?
hi , if i got sale from digital Products, advertising charges are Deducted from the customer money or we have to pay it

I have a ton of suggestions in my video titled "0 sales on Etsy from your digital products? Here are 10 ways to fix it." !
NEVER share your etsy shop, that will kill it. Everyone will go look with no intention of buying and everyone else will copy you and literally just steal your product. This is your more popular content because many people CANNOT succeed their own (mindset, laziness, ineptitude) and that is why they watch videos instead of get to work and learn. You deserve your success, don't let people pressure you into ruining it for their curiosity or gain. Just pin a comment that your shop is private and never mention anything remotely specific again. Just say you sell B2B printables. Good luck! Congrats!

Thanks so much! This is in line with my thinking :)
I'm not sure if you said this in another video or not, but do you do ads outside of etsy? For example do you post ads on tiktok, instagram, etc? Besides word of mouth to friends and etsy ads, how do you get your product out there to the people who want to buy your product? I have also started an etsy shop at the start of December and I've been struggling to figure out how to get my products in front of potential buyers. Any help/tips would be greatly appreciated!
