My 28mm Roman Republican Army

Here is my Late Republican Roman army and a few friends and enemies. The army is intended for use with the Art de la Guerre war games rules. The figures are 28mm and mainly from from Warlord Games, Victrix, Aventine Miniatures and Old Glory.

    Glad you are liking the armies. I am helped by the great figures now available. ADLG is a nice game. You can see it comes from the DBX stable but with a changes that make it play very differently. I am likely to be using a version of this army at an ADLG tournament in mid September.

    Thank you. I didn't buy the mat from a supplier, a friend had it spare and I bought it from him. Someone else asked the same question recently and I checked with my friend but he couldn't remember who he got it from. Sorry. As for the basing, it's a bit fiddly but this how I remember doing it - I stick the figures on the base and when they are dry I put PVA all over the base. Then I took two different grades of grit from Gale Force Nine, which I applied in small mixed patches on the base (in a ratio of about 2 parts of the finer to 1 part of the coarser) These patches cover perhaps 20% or maybe 25% of the base. Then over the top of the whole base I put fine sand (childrens sand pit sand from a DIY store). Once that all dried I painted the whole base with watered down Americana "Desert Sand". When that dried, I dry brushed three, perhaps four times. Each with "Desert sand" lightened with white. Each successive dry brushing getting lighter in colour and lighter in application until the last one is close to an off white on the highest, most exposed areas. Then I applied static grass - I think I was using a spring grass mix for this project.

    Better option for gladiators is Gallio Warrior, dacians or hoplite, remember Murillo, hoplomachus or thraex, they look like normal Units of legions

    @blainhanlon15585 жыл бұрын

    Noticed there ain’t any sheathed gladii on your legionnaires. I was wondering if you had to manually remove the hilts that stick out from the sheaths to make the blades seem drawn, if so, nicely done. I always appreciate an eye for detail like that. How would you suggest removing the hilts without running the risk of epically mutilating the minis? Great job mein düde, a truly inspiring collection you’ve got going there🙇🏼‍♂️🙏🏻💯💯💯🔥 Many hails and epics 🙋🏼‍♂️👌🏻🤙🏻💦

  • @garethe121

    Yes you are right, on these figures the bodies come with a gladius in the sheath so if you use an arm with a gladius you need to remove the hilt from the sheath with a craft knife. I was a bit worried to start but the plastic is easy to cut and you can remove the hilt with two cuts, the first across the top of the sheath and the second down behind the hilt. I found it didn't damage the figure in a way that mattered and after painting the location is difficult to spot. (btw if you look carefully you might be able to see I missed one)

  • @garethe121

    @garethe121

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi and thank you. The shield transfers were all from Little Big Man Studios 28mm Caesarian Roman range for Walord Games miniatures. These can take a bit of time to apply. Each side of the shield is separate and you have to cut them out. Getting the bit that goes round the shield boss needs a sharp knife. They are not water slide decals I think they are the ones which are self adhesive.

    It is some time since I bought them and I am not100% certain but I think the cataphracts are Old Glory Parthian Cataphracts PRP-001 in the 'Imperial Roman' range. You can mount 4 on a 60mm wide base.

    I've enjoyed both your videos so far, but this one was better so your experimentation is working for me. I particularly liked the close ups where it was easier to see the detail, especially on the turntable. Very interested to see the Armenians which are out of the ordinary. Some of your figures were painted long before AdlG rules were published - have you been rebasing or is it a DBX standard basing? I've never tried the rules but I know they are popular in my area. Are you focussed on AdlG now, or do you consider playing other rulesets? The two questions sort of go together because the appearance of how figures fit onto the base size does have a bearing on my choice of rules - for instance your Armenian cavalry looked just right, but I have often found the energetic poses of Old Glory infantry figures does not permit them to be based four abreast and also hinders bases being stacked one behind the other.

  • @garethe121

    @garethe121

    Thank you for your very useful feedback. I played a lot of DBM, although most of that was with 15mm figures. My 28mm armies, although based for DBM almost never got an outing. I found the basing system worked well and have broadly kept to it. After not playing DBM for many years I briefly went back to it but quickly moved to ADLG where there are more players. ADLG is a good game, there is quite a lot of subtlety to the rules but I think of it as very much a game with soldier miniatures rather than an attempt to simulate a real battle. And it suffers visually from the flat representational terrain that is convenient. I am still looking for the perfect ancients rules as I am with all the other period I play.

    As for Old Glory, I find them very variable. I don’t like a lot of their infantry. It is a company where I need to see the figures before I buy.

  • @RalphAstley

    Often it is availability of opponents that decide on your choice of rules, which is what you hint at in your choice of AdlG. The only problem with that is I find wargamers are fickle in their loyalty and often skip from one fad to the next. At least the DBX standard basing allows you to follow suit. I settled on Sword and Spear some time ago but don't get to play it that often as I attend a club irregularly - it is worth investigating if you haven't come across it.
