My 2021 Desk Setup - M1 Mac Mini
Here is my 2021 Desk Setup. I took the plunge into this setup once the M1 Macs were released at the end of 2020. I was using 2 Macs prior....a 2015 15" MacBook Pro and a 2017 27" iMac. Both served me really well but the updates with Apple silicon were too powerful to pass up. So here we are!
Below I'll have links to all the items I got for this setup.

Have you taken the plunge and bought a M1 Mac yet? What do you think so far?
@normitos
3 жыл бұрын
Nope. Let me me preface that I am a senior tech at Apple. I think they are great machines(some issues because they are first gen that make em a headache for me) but whilst I have a ton of work supplied gear(and Apple does not skimp with it's employees) I do purchase my own personal use stuff and i have a 2013 Imac quad core i7 with 32 gigs of ram and a 2 tb ssd(that total cost and upgrades, I am out 1700 usd which means I am out 212 bucks a year) it is stuck on Catalina but it is driving 1 32 inch curved display, its own Screen and connected to a 4k display(res does not get up, but I got a good deal). Docs say it does not support 32 gigs, but it works in mine. I do not do music. But I run it is a Plex server, and I can stream HD video to the apple tv in the living room, in my mothers room, and my wife can watch a video in our bedroom while I am fooling around on the web and working in various Adobe products. That being said I am only about 35% use of the resources, and you have to consider that Plex is transcoding on the fly.) I want a new Mac, and I can get one cheap. But I need 32 gigs of ram to future proof me. 16 will not cut it. Nor will me having to buy a dongle for extra screens. And honestly my 8 year old mac runs like a scalded dog. It is hard for me to justify the money Apple gives me to buy a new machine when my old one runs so well. BUT. Your video is awesome, and your set up is envious. I have a similar one but I love your desk. The good thing though is we are bringing back more ports. But keep up the good work, great vid.

Bro, your setup is 👌🏾! This video has been super helpful as I'm in the market for a new desktop. I currently have an iMac '27 (late 2013) and it's time for an upgrade. I'm a grad student, so my computer needs are mostly for writing and reading, with the occasional KZread rabbit holes while I'm procrastinating -- which is how I found your video. I was debating between buying the M1 Mac Mini and all of its accessories or waiting for the larger iteration of the M1 iMac (and who knows when that's dropping). I tend to be indecisive with big purchases, so seeing your setup helped eliminate the stress of selecting the "right" monitor and accessories. Thank you!

I would probably have the new Mac Air or Pro in the same set up in my bedroom, and have a full spec Mac mini set up in the Office..... these M1's are next gen over every Intel Mac and pro's on the market, at a huge discount over intel... cant wait to see how intel catches up in. few years...

Great instructional video. Man, Macintosh has come a long way. My first Mac was the Macintosh Classic. I went through each evolution up to the Power Mac G5. Fell in love with them. Last week I ordered the Mac Mini M1 (16GB). It will be here in a few days. Anxious to road test it. I also ordered a OWC 14-Port Thunderbolt 3 Dock. Watching your set up has helped me with regards ergonomics: The monitor on a stand and mounting the Blue Yeti (which I have) on a boom stand. BTW, I love your computer table. Kelala, awesome set up. Quick question. I’m really torn between this style setup or the new M1 IMac. How much do you miss your IMac display vs this current wide screen unit? Or do you get used to it fairly quickly?
@KelalaSeichi
3 жыл бұрын
I love this widescreen setup. I have so much more real estate when I'm doing edits or having multiple windows open to do work stuff. On the topic of which to buy...its tough to say, the beauty of the iMac is that it's all in one and no need to buy a separate monitor and stand. However, if I'm thinking what's on the horizon for Apple...there will be a 30" iMac coming at some point that'll likely feature an updated version of the M1 chip. That will be a beast for sure. And again, it'll come with an amazing monitor as an all-in-one setup. For now I'm partial to the widescreen setup here. Hopefully that helps!

Excellent video. The good thing about a mac mini is that, you get to design your own desktop set-up noticed, you have lots of none Apple, Inc. devices which, is pretty cool. I went the other direction, prefer as many of my desktop items as possible to from Apple, Inc. Own a 2010, mac mini (the last model with a built-in DVD super-drive) paired with an Apple 27-inch cinema (none thunderbolt) display which, of course includes a built-in web camera and speakers. @KelalaSeichi
2 жыл бұрын
Depends on your ASUS monitor. The Mac Mini has thunderbolt 3 ports as well as an HDMI. My monitor is a thunderbolt monitory so you're able to connect multiple devices to you and have a single cable run to the mac mini at full 40GBPS bandwidth. Both options work really well even if there are limited ports on the mac mini.
Great video!! how's the mac mini so far? looking to get one soon
@KelalaSeichi
3 жыл бұрын
I have to be honest, I have a video coming out soon talking about this. I will say that the Mac Mini was a game changer for me. The M1 chip justified me selling 2 computers I had. If you're thinking of getting it, I say do it!! You won't be disappointed. However, I personally needed some mobility. I'll be dropping the vid soon on the M1 Macbook Pro setup I now have. Thanks for watching!
I've purchased my first-ever iPad with the M1 and am loving it. I was originally saving for the 14" macbook pro to replace my 13" pro, but got antsy when they didn't announce anything concrete at WWDC. I'm considering selling the macbook pro now and getting a mac mini as the iPad really handles all of my portability needs anyway. I keep going back and forth on my monitor though - from LG 21:9 (3440x1440) to LG 16:9 (4k) and back...I just don't know which screen size I prefer. Something about the "crispness" on the 4k I really enjoy, and don't find myself utilizing the extra space on the 21:9 all that often anyway - as most of the windows I view are placed dead center (in the space that the 16:9 would fit anyway).
@KelalaSeichi
2 жыл бұрын
I hear you there. If you don't need the added real estate, then I'd say save that money for something else and go with the smaller 4k monitor. The M1 mac mini will be a great match with that!

Thanks! Took some hard work but love how it turned out. I’m currently using the iPhone 11 Pro in midnight green.
how do you deal with text looking blurry af on non-4k displays with Macs? I went through 4 different ultra wides before settling on a regular 4k which solved the issue. It has something to do with antialiasing being turned off post Mojave.

I will say that this 4k ultrawide has not been blurry at all with regards to text or images. I have MacOS Big Sur as of right now.

hi I wanted to ask a question, which one do you think is a better purchase. A 38 inch lg wn95c connected to a 2018 macboook or the new 8 core imac.
@KelalaSeichi

I’m not gonna lie I’m a huge fan of the M1 macs so diving into the new iMacs might be a better choice depending on your workload. However, I’d be patient and wait to see what the new rumored 30” iMac’s turn out to be before pulling the trigger. Might be some sweet surprises there!

@@KelalaSeichi mmm yeah I agree with you. For now I wanna. get a Shure sm7b and just connect. it to my Mac before I pull the trigger on an iMac later on

Don't you think the new iMac would have saved you some money, with its studio quality mic and gr8 built in speakers. oh and I forgot the 4.5K monitor. Plus clean look with less cable management

I hear you on that! I think in the inspiration of a clean, seamless machine to do great work...the new 2021 iMacs are amazing. I think the M1 Mac Mini has a place where people have existing setups and need something to integrate in. I do love this wide monitor as it replaces me having to do 2 monitors to get this same amount of real estate. I will say i'm excited to see what the 30" iMac will be...could be a reason to upgrade!
Is 8 gb ram enough, what application do you use?
@KelalaSeichi
3 жыл бұрын
I use Premiere Pro as my heavy lifting video editing app. A few others in the Adobe suite. 8 GB actually isn't bad to be honest. However, I moved over to a 16 GB M1 MacBook Pro recently. Check it out here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/ep95tJWGqbS-hZs.html

Hi I got the motion sensor and lights do you have any instructions on setup like yours
@KelalaSeichi
2 жыл бұрын
It'll depend on your smart home setup but I use smartthings hub to tie everything together. Then I create routines with the motion sensors to trigger lights to turn and and colors they change to. You could also use the sensors with Google Home and Amazon Alexa.

Do you need a sengled hub as well in order for the smarthings hub to pick up the lights?
@KelalaSeichi
2 жыл бұрын
@@alpineda6134 Hey Al, no you don't need the sengled hub along with smartthings. Just run the smartthings hub and any smart bulbs should connect no problem. you'll be able to manage any automations directly from the app. Something to keep in mind that some bulbs do require you to connect to their brands app first then integrate through smartthings. Totally depends on the brand of bulb though. Each one will come with instructions on what to do.
