My 20 Years Playing With Rory Gallagher by Gerry McAvoy
Музыка
Rory Gallagher is one of the true guitar greats and has been cited by the likes of Brian May, Eric Clapton, The Edge and Johnny Marr as an influence on them. I spoke with his long time bass partner, GERRY McAVOY, who played on every one of Rory's studio albums across nearly two decades and he tells stories of how he joined with Rory, what it was like in the studio creating music with him, how they had no set list when performing live and what Rory was like as a person too.

Gerry was a substantial part of the success of Rory. Man, what a rock solid bass lines! Am a bass player myself and hear many bass players not timing right, a bit after the beat. Gerry never did that. Always right on the beat, also in slow songs, which made it sound so incredibly tight. Rory must have had a thorough base from that to go loose on it. The same goes for Ted on his drums, by the way.
Gallagher, McAvoy, Ted McKenna - a power trio like no other.

I saw them a few times in the early seventies. Gerry McAvoy is the bass player you dream of if you're a guitarist! He's the soldier who holds your back, gives you power and never ever lets you down! What a stroke of luck!
such an underrated bass player
Gerry‘s autobiography is highly recommended.
The best rock/blues Bass Player! 🙏🎶💚☘️ You have the same vibe and energy as Rory! 🎸🎸
The best pair ever in rock music are Rory and Gerry. So enjoyable to watch Gerry play on stage. Great guy too!
Gerry is up there with the greatest,he complemented Rory perfectly.Absolute monster on the bass. That live version of Shadow Play is savage, shows both of them at the peak of their powers.

Amazing back in the day when I went to watch rory gerry mcavoy great bass player xxx
When Band of Friends in Germany : I go to the Concerts ! Thank you Gerry for the Music! Greats from Germany ....the Bullfrog !
Merci beaucoup for this interview. For as great a musician that Rory was, I was always amazed at how much the rhythm section contributed to his success. Gerry was a MONSTER bass player.
I like it when Gerry mentions that telepathy, music wise, existed between the two of them.
Thank you for the Memories you are an awesome bass player
Gerry... thanks so much for your support on all those tunes! Your bass just kicked ass so much and added so much to Rory's tunes!!! Your energy was such a huge part of the performances I've seen, not to mention the recordings.
Gerry was a fantastic member of Rory Gallagher’s band. He is a top class bass player, his playing blows me away.
Gerry laid the foundations for Rory's live performances. I liked Gerry's "Band Of Friends" activities and also experienced them live. Honorable!
An absolute beast of a bass player, seriously seriously good
Gerry is a monster bass player, and the perfect fit for Rory's pure raw energy!
Wow Gerry Mcavoy nobody rocks like Gerry what a player he is Gerry and Rory were brilliant together
Great bassist and musician. Great guy. Make no mistake that he watched Rory's back. Those Irish boys were tough.
Rory is my absolute favorite guitar player and Gerry is my favorite bass player.... this is gold 🎸🤘🍻
Best bass player in the world, this guy is the real deal
Hi Gerry! Thanks for mentioning that special gig at the Ulster Hall, it was January 1st 1972 I was only 12 years old and went with my neighbour who was older than me but a complete Rory and Taste fan. I still have the ticket in my Rory Gallagher scrap book. It was my first gig and you guys made the front page of Melody Maker that week. What an experience it was for me, means a lot that out of all of Gerry’s gigs that he did with Rory he remembered and mentioned that one. 🌌💕🌠🕊🙏🌅Best wishes to you Gerry from the County Antrim coast . Thank you for the music 🌅🌠👌🏻
Great interview. Thanks gerry
Watching Gerry and Rory on stage with their almost telepathic awareness of each other shines and comes across every time as two musicians at the peak of their powers. The drummers came and went, and very good they were too, but Gerry was a monster on the bass and Rory was one of the best guitarists ever. This humble, shy, special man truly was a one off. RIP maestro.
Awesome interview! Very cool to hear from this legend! Thank you!!

Nostalgic to hear from gerry mcavoy such great bass player
rory gallagher , gerry mc avoy and wilgar campbell ! THE trio !
Fantastic bass player. Saw him with Rory, 3 times at the Ulster Hall in Belfast back in my youth.
Gerry always seemed to be in the same zone with Rory when they were stretching it out. This interview reinforces what a great bass player he was to anticipate such spontaneity WITHOUT A SETLIST - amazing!
Hi gerry.. Love seeing you. You made rory complete. Thanks for everything.❤
Thank goodness for Gerry (Brendan and Davy Knowles as well), as he continues to carry on Rory's legacy with the Band Of Friends.
Very underrated, they gelded😮 perfectly great musicians
Your solid powerful stand while playing base is unforgettable.
His playing on 'Souped up Ford' was insane !
I so enjoyed this. Thank you both for the interview and thanks Gerry for the music
Such a fantastic down to earh guy. I saw him with Rory a couple of time and also with Nine Below Zero
Gerry and Rory good music couple! Thank’s for all the years of playing with Rory and your loyalty to him! Just great
Why did everything cool happen before I was born? I’m so glad we have stuff archived so future generations can experience it again

Amazing interview, Gerry is a legend.
I met Gerry in Barcelona what a great guy... Gerry McAvoy the only bass player that could keep up with Rory
Gerry, you are one of the greatest bassists of all time
Saw you guys blazing away.. one of the best live bands ever. Thanks G.
Saw Rory Gallagher play live in Belfast in the late 70's. Great guitar player!
and it will stay with me forever
He signed a copy of his book for me. Very friendly guy.
Gerry was probably the only bass player that could keep up with rory......
Thanks Gerry,
Lovely to hear your joy in the talking of memories with Rory, and great questions, too! We love him forever! 🇺🇸🇨🇮🎸 Thank you
Saw Rory and Gerry 4 times, great together.
I’d loved to have had a bass player like Gerry when I was a gigging musician back in the 70s-90s. He was/is a bloody powerhouse and just knows what to play and when to play it. Rory and Gerry were the perfect combination, and when Ted joined the band ( a hard hitting drummer like myself) it was just perfection in my eyes…even if it was only for few years.
Both Gerry and Rory were fantastic together on guitar
My favorite tune from Calling Card...Country Mile. The very epitome of a rocker, Rory showing everyone how it's done. RIP great one.
Calling Card, To me, sounded Mono. Or, filtered... Just say'n Gerry, your the Sh*t... Jamm'in every song 120%... Your Will boosted Rory up and away... "Thanks A Million" Gerry

The production on Calling Card was lifeless. All the energy was drained out of it. Compare it with the marvellous live feel of Against the Grain
Great interview, another legend never mentioned that much, deserves much more recognition, big part of Rory history
I hope you return to the states for another tour with Davy and Brendan now. We miss you all.
I would love to play with this guy. His energy and presence on the bass is really something else. Always looks like he's having the time of his life
Wow just wow
You are a Treasure, Gerry McAvoy.
Thanks for letting us know that you have time to get together with the Best Music and hope your new stuff is soon out? Thanks love it!!
Had the great pleasure of seeing him play a small venue in Detroit and talked a bit after the show great bassist and nice guy
Great interview thank you☘️☘️☘️
Went to Band of Friends like two or three years ago. They were awesome, especially Gerry, even though he wasn't too happy with me not being loud or cheerful enough. Come on, give a Frisian a break, Gerry. Loved the show ♥
Gracias por el video , como seguidor de rory y tambien tuyo estoy muy contento , tengo 65 años y soy fan vuestro desde que empezasteis , el pobre rory nos dejo , pero su musica siempre estara presente en mi vida .
In my opinion the best Bass player ever I learned alot form this interview. I was always Purple fan and loved Roger . Thanks and have a pint .

Fond memories of the Brighton Dome gigs Rory played at.
There's playing with and jelling with, Gerry n Rory were fortunate to jell and reach that magic dynamism...Rory had some great musicians along the way, their live contributions will live on
Thanks for everything Gerry! I enjoyed your book so much it very much helped me finally be at peace with Rorys passing. You were so fabulous at making the Boss man sound as big as possible all the time and it is so much fun to watch you at work on stage. I last saw you with Band of Friends at the Dakota in Minneapolis in what must have been one of Teds very last gigs (RIP).It was a great gig and it was so much fun to chat with you after the show and confirm that like Rory you are a really nice, fun, down to earth guy that seemed to honestly enjoy chatting with a thrilled fan. I hope to get a chance to see you onstage again.
Interesting vid. I saw RG in concert twice; once in 1972 and once in 1980. The 1972 gig was at the Pier in Portsmouth (or maybe it was the Guild Hall) anyway, the only amplification Rory had there, was his Vox AC30, which seemed very inadequate, for the venue. The 1980 gig, at the Lewisham Odeon was mesmerising. It was him at his best, I'd say.
Waiting for such an interview for a few weeks ! So good to hear and sea Mr McAvoy! Thank you sir for the wonderful solos you played on Bullfrog and all the others, for your enormous sound on the studio recordings which supports so well the thrill given by Rory's voice and guitar! And thank you for having survived to the mad life of musicians in the seventies!!! So much have payed the strong price for having given all their energy and creativity to please themselves but the audiences first among them Rory, Lou who was excellent as none and same for Rod. ♥ Thanks to this channel too

Great video.....I saw Rory 13 times......6 with Taste and 7 with RG Band,
Gerry just like Rory you are amazing musicians.👌👌👌👌👌👌
Really interesting, thanks very much.
Loved Rory but Gerry's base lines were a big part of the music, awesome.
Best trio since ,cream or ZzTop , had some lessons with Ted when i started out ! 💜🍷🔥
The hardest working bass player of all time.
Great JERRY! xxxxx
Who would have known that Michael Caine played such a mean base back in the 70s? He kept that quiet, did Michael. Not a lot of people knew that!
Respekt. Realität a time for history.
Gerry's book, Riding Shotgun, is a great read as well
Gerry was the only bass player that could keep up with Rory
Gerry McAvoy is one of the best basest
There is occasionally a kind of telepathy between players. When it does happen you become almost unstoppable. I don't know how many players get to that level. Those that do know exactly what i mean.
I think Rory's best sounding album was Top Priority........It sounds so crisp !
Hi, has anyone located the base error in Laundromat? TIA. I don't have much of an ear.

Gerry must have beeen possesed to keep up with Rory´s pace. Loved them both. I saw them three times with Rod de Ath and they were more than great.
Always been a pleasure watching Gerry rockin that thing. Very few made it look and sound so good. Cheers!
Gerry McAvoy, Gary Thain and Trevor Bolder (both Uriah Heep) are my 3 favorite bass players of all time.
Rod dias was a machine too
