I feel for you. I had them all too: tendinitis, plantar fasciitis, stress fractures on the ankles, incredible knee pain on both legs and hip pain too. Orthopedics put me on orthotics and told me to let go of the idea of running for good. I came home crying that day, because I had just decided to go for my first marathon. BUT: I was lucky to find a team of coaches that is superior to anything I have ever worked with in the past. Not only the way they program the training, but also their understanding of body biomechanics and how modern lifestyle affects them (leading to injuries). I started working on "stupid" exercises like toe exercises, deep resting squat, plyometrics and wearing barefoot shoes, the single best thing for our feet (not for running). Two years later, I have almost dropped the orthotics (getting there), knee pain is gone on both legs, stress fractures have never come back and I have run three marathons and going for an Ironman, and much more. They have followed and put back on their feet people much more compromised than you and me (someone who was shot on the leg, has the bullet still inside and is running marathons with me now). Happy to get you in touch with them.

@@ItzMcbob Of course! I'd have to make a 2 hours lecture on this topic but the essential is: 1) Toe Yoga: this is essential and over time will literally fix ankles, knees and back pain (Peter Attia had an excellent podcast episode explaining all the science behind this "296 ‒ Foot health." 2) Deep resting squat: it will rebuild your full range of motion, lubricate and strengthen your knee joints and ankles, back, calves and hips. Do this as much as possible during the day. For instance, I stay in a squat while reading, waiting for the train, replying to messages etc. It is also the only stretching position I ever do after a run. 3) Planks and glute bridges are a great start for core strength that is functional to the act of running. 4) Wear barefoot shoes in your daily life, stay barefoot at home. This is a non negotiable for me: I can do all the toe mobility exercises of the universe but if my toes are squeezed into tight shoes all day long everything will be vain and chronic pain will always be there (Peter Attia also talks about this in the podcast I have mentioned above). Then for running I use common running shoes, as long as 90% of my time is spent barefoot or in shoes that are wide and flexible enough, then even the most cushioned running shoe will not a problem. Could go on for days talking about this but hope this short YT comment helped a bit. Happy to answer to more questions!

@@xeno527 I did get X-rays yes, but I had got to a point where even walking would hurt so it was pretty bad. Took 6 months of orthopedic boot and rest from running (still doing cycling and calisthenics but missed my most beloved activity). Wasn't fun, and I am not sure of the effectiveness of the boot anyway. If you're early in your pain, just take a few days or weeks of rest until it goes away. I would not wish months of complete stop to anybody so make sure you don't reach that point! Then when you start again just make sure you become a black belt in running technique, and stress fractures and other common runners pain will be a thing of the past. That's my experience at least 🙂 Did I answer?

Crying a little bit while watching this because I started training seriously this year after years of stagnation and everything was going great until I injured myself about a month and a half ago and the initial injury uncovered a bunch of imbalances and range of motion issues and it’s a never ending list of things going wrong. What started on my calves, turned into an ankle issue, turned into a back issue and now my shoulders are also not functioning properly and it’s been one of the most demotivating (and expensive) experiences of my life. I’ve been struggling a lot to keep motivated, to do my recovery drills for the things we’ve identified but I’ve felt like my body is betraying me and a bit hopeless about being able to train again so thank you for sharing that you’ve also been dealing with something similar. Makes me feel less alone and a bit more hopeful. Sending you all the best wishes for your ongoing recovery!

Hey, sorry to hear about your injuries. I'm a physiotherapist and you mentioned using Ice for your knee. Using Ice might help with the pain in the short tearm, because of the gate control theorie. But what it does also immediatly is stopping the lymphatic system from working properly and thereby practicaly stopping the healing process. If you want to use something for the pain, it's much better to use a wet towel, the temperature shouldn't be below 8 degreees celsius or you can use a hot water bottle, which also reduces the pain, again not through some magic, but the gate control theorie is the reason. And maybe also consider that the pain in the knee might come from hip instability, which is often the case. (Assisted) single leg squats are one good exercise to stabilize the hips for example. I hope this was helpful and I wish you all the best and a quick recovery from now on!

I was able to my first run 2 weeks ago. It was amazing. I only ran 1 km. But the process made it so special. If there is 1 thing I learned and want to give you as advice: Enjoy and appreciate the things you are able to do. Even if it feels awful you can not run and can not bike. You are able to climb, to hike and to swim. These things are amazing! I still dream of doing these things. I wish you all the best on your Recovery. I Hope you appreciate all the things you can still do and never give up.

This speaks close to my heart. When I was 17 I sprained my right ankle pretty bad and it didn't really heal properly, even though I did what the doctor told me to do. I started training 5 years later and have been training for 8 years now with consistent PAIN and aches all over: knees, hips, shoulders, elbows - I suspect it has all to do with that ankle. I've been to more than 5 physiotherapists, 3 orthopedic doctors, 5 chiropractors... I often want to give up training and sports altogehter - something that's supposed to bring me so much joy, brings me so much pain and frustration. On the good days, I just tell myself that the alternative of not giving up is far worse. I wish you the best!

I wouldn't overthink it that much. Many of us don't have a perfectly aligned body and as we get older the body becomes less capable of taking the loads being introduced in a mechanically unfavorable way. That's why many people tend to get these issues in their 20s. What really helps is working extremely hard to balance out these structural issues. That's more than just a workout twice a week though. I speak here from personal experience. This may take a year or even longer, it's worth it though. You can do it, don't give up, that's why I'm writing this.

I’m 30, and I’ve been injury free since ever.. until last year. I’m very used to runnning and cycling, so that last year I went for a 70 km run. It went well. However, after starting to train again after few days, I started to feel some pain on the top of my left foot. As you did, I thought it would be something that heals up just by reducing the training load a little. But it didn’t. I eventually ended up having even problems to walk. It took almost a year to recover from it. I can now run again and enjoy sport, although I can still feel that my left foot is not compleltely ok. That year was one of the hardest of my whole life. I would have never thought how an injury can be so mentally devasting. I completely understand your words. I wish you good luck with your recovery, and keep trying. I feel you, I am there with you right now. My back started hurting 10 years ago at around 15yo, probably of stress, but maybe it was a minor scoliosis, nobody has an answer. 5 years ago my right knee started hurting, I was standing on my knees on a cold surface cleaning windows, around that time I started seeking professional help. Fast forward to now and some 7 doctors, neurologists, physios, rehab specialists, osteopaths later, I still have no answers. Started bouldering and lifting weights a year ago bc i hated feeling weak, now i have shoulder issues, both knees are fucked, back doesn't give me a day off pain even tho the form is good while lifting. I want to start running to help with endurance while climbing, but the dilemma: don't do anything physical, so you don't hurt as much and pause the degradation of joints while becoming weaker or do sports, lift weights, run, become stronger, but deal with constant pain, injuries, stress on joints and back and never catch a break of running to the doctors like a chicken without it's head. I am 25 and I have a physique of a grandma, this can't be everything that life has to offer.

I ignored a shoulder injury for 4 months and could hardly raise my arm to shoulder level. I'm imbalanced anyway from an old back injury on top of a very old coccyx fracture. This is a fairly common thing today. It comes mainly from two things. The first is the amount of idleness we have today in our lives. We sit a record amount of time and move less than ever. Even if we train it's only 1-2h per today, the rest is not doing anything. Back then you were always in movement. If you look at how babies and kids grow up, they are naturally in movement all the time, they do some kind of movement all day. The other is that most bodies don't have good biomechanics to run. Coming from the first point you should never start running to get fit and only start running if you are fit. Applying the second point with bad biomechanics it's very easy to over train. The two combined together bring nothing but disaster. Especially in men where on top of too much weight comes a lot of ego and they have to run a certain speed or ride that 30 km/h so they don't look "weak". A lot of people go from 0 to 100, and it's always either they do 0 or they go 100. We have these hiking events where people hike 100km in one go. And people completely wreck themselves there, giving them nagging injuries that stay for weeks, months sometimes years. They always talk about mindset, but at this point it's the opposite, when you are already limping at kilometer 50 the correct mindset would be to give up so you don't injure themselves. But people just keep walking because they want that achievement, that will give them absolutely nothing.

I hope my experience can help you in your journey to recovery : You mention you've seen a few Physio but no Osteopath. If that's the case, I'd suggest maybe seeing one. Specifically an Integrative Osteo. I had a similar injury : 3 months, 4 different physio and a ton of rest and the pain was still there. Turned out a nerve was blocked in my ankle due to a sprain ankles that probably happenned years before. That blocked nerve was shutting down one of my gluteus muscle. That shut down gluteus muscle meant my TFL was taking over and was overworking. Attached to that TFL muscles : the IT band. When I started ramping up my training, the TFL became really tight and created a pain in my knee. All the physio kept on massaging my knee and telling me to reinforce my gluteus. Turned out it was useless because my body was intentionnaly shutting down my gluteus because of that blocked nerve. And the body considered that there was no issue in my ankle si it was bothering fixing anything. Doing some reinforcement was making things worse because no matters how I was trying to activate my gluteus, I was just putting more stress in my TFL/IT band/knee. The solution was to do some Prolotherapy in my ankle (injecting glucose) to create an inflamation and a stress reaction so the body start healing that area because of that inflamation. And while it will fix the inflamation, it will as well start fixing the strained tendon that is shutting down that nerve controlling my gluteus. What I mean by that : Your accident with your big toe may have damaged a tendon that never properly healed. That damaged tendon may be shutting down one specific nerve that is controlling a muscle in your body. That shut down muscles means other muscles are taking over and are overworking. And they may be creating pain in your knee, lower back ect ... Why do I recommend an Osteo over a physio? Because an Osteo looks at joints and look for the cause of the problem. Where a physio looks at muscles and often treat the consequence. But if you keep on releasing a muscles but doesn't bother fixing what's making it tight in the first place, it will not go away. So instead of trying to fix your lower back, knee ect ... I suggest : try to fix your toe. See an Osteo and see if he can put things back in place. Ask a professional that do Prolotherapy, tell him/her about your problem and see if it makes sense to them. I hope that help. good luck!

Well this is quite the wake-up call for me. I love to be on outdoor adventures, whether it is running, cycling, swimming, kayaking, hiking, skiing... As long as I'm outside and moving I am happy. I am however not that good when it comes to listening to my body, my love for exercise and challenging myself surpasses my actual pain limit. Since somehow breaking my ankle (fibula bone) two years ago without noticing, I've dealt with a lot of lower limb injuries, calf, shin but mostly ankle. After getting yet another calf injury yesterday morning, the timing of this video is oddly confronting. You inspire me to get a more serious check-up than just the physio... Thanks for posting!

i do sports quite often, but not structured and when i do it, mostly a tad too hard. a couple weeks back i have decided to do my first ironman next year. for that i am using a structured workout (computer generated, rebalances regularly). didnt think much of it first but the longer im doing it, the more convinced i am. the computer program gives me many but quite light workouts. its taking care a lot of base and build phases. currently i am still in base. to stay healthy i think its good to follow a plan and not doing it like you feel that day. overtraining is a real thing and quite dangerous. so i am glad that this program takes care of that and gives me the right loads every day. myself i would overdo it. i hope you will have a good recovery soon. take care of your health and good luck!!

This is brutal to watch man. I work as a physio and I can confidently say we don’t have nearly the laser guided rehabilitation skills we need for the world. Your an inspiring guy and listening to your body is always the start. Wishing you luck man. Usually heavy slow repetitions and eccentric training helps most tendinopathys. I would look into Peptide therapy if I was you. BPC-157 or TB-500

sorry to hear you've been struggling with injuries! I have been working through an injury myself and it has been a long and discouraging process. I ruptured a tendon in my knee and it's prevented me from running, hiking, cliff jumping, biking, flips, and doing everything I love for the past year. just as i am reaching the end of my recovery(9-12 months) i just received the news that the tendon in my knee healed wrong and i will need to be operated on again and restart the entire recovery process. this has been devastating news for me. keep documenting your recovery journey! it's inspiring to know that even people like you with a high level of athleticism deal with injuries too. have you looked into bpc 157? It's a peptide that is supposed to have powerful healing properties with connective tissues.

Really loved and enjoyed this video. I also participated in the 60-day running challenge, and was fine back then. Currently though, I'm dealing and recovering from a bad case of runner's knee, which means that I've been unable to run for 2 weeks myself. Really relate and understand your struggles, as I'm going through this nightmare of injury myself. Hope you recover soon, and and become able to run again, can only imagine how much you may miss running after 2 years. I've struggled so much just being off of running for 2 weeks. 😊🤞

Hey man, I just randomly stumbled across this video. I can relate to what you're going through as I haven't been able to run for a few years due to different pains and injuries. I've felt lost, depressed, and discouraged. But I think I'm finally finding the right path to be on. I don't know if you've heard of David Grey. He is incredibly knowledgeable in terms of feet and he has an approach that I haven't seen from anyone else. I would highly recommend looking him up. I believe you can work directly with him or someone on his team. I've gained a lot of knowledge just from his youtube and instagram. Keep pushing brother. Injuries suck, but they can be beaten.

Great from you to share this story! I played soccer for 15 years, when I stopped I was totally broken. Ever since I train for injury prevention and longevity. But still, injuries happen. Just this spring I started doing 1hr stair master as cardio on my off-day. After a month I felt light pain in my upper Quad/ hip. Two days later my roommate asked to go on a bike ride. Just before halfway I suddenly feel the same pain when lifting my leg. Had to paddle 1 1/2 more hours on the way back. Really aggravated the injury, had to pause all cardio for a month, it hurt from walking every step. Being patient, listening to the body and knowing when to stop. Great video, great lessons!

Thank you for this inspiring video. I hurt my leg (calf, hamstring) two years ago as well because of overtraining. Absolutely sucks. I am back to slow running, but anything beyond 6 or 7k (even if I run really slowly, sprinting in general is a no-no) is still basically impossible. Wish you nothing but the best! Looking forward to other videos and documentaries in the future.

I feel this man. I'm about the same age and always started running out of the blue and overtrained many times. This year I started doing extensive warm ups and stretching afterwards and now I hurt my lower back during stretching, exactly at the same place I normally have problems due to an incident a few years ago, even though I also started training my core better this year. Sometimes it just doesnt seem fair and the work you put in doesnt seem to give the results you want, but good luck man, you'll figure it out sometime and will be back on track 💪🏼

Thank you for sharing this. I was recently diagnosed with tendonitis in my left ankle, and it's been about 4 months now with no improvement. Despite trying rest, rehab, taping, stretching, gentle exercise, and supplements, nothing seems to alleviate it. Each morning, I hope for even a slight improvement, but every day I wake up to the same discomfort. It's disheartening to hold back on activities I love for fear of aggravating it further. The hardest part is the waiting-not just the pain, but the anticipation of recovery and getting back to my usual routine.

Therefore I know how hard depression can hit if you have to stop training for weeks or months and all your progress and strength is gone. It is good you are being public with this. Feel like there are fitness KZreadrs who don’t talk about it, or are freaks of nature that don’t represent the average athlete. The public push themselves to keep up with the brags they see online. If you’re consistently exercising and eating well, you’re doing well. Don’t get sucked into the bubble of trying to optimize and forget the joy of living.
