0AK why would you say that? It’s not like he’s some uneducated prat buying a rare stone with 10% of his net worth to put in his ear or in order to impress a woman. He said himself it’s an investment that will live in a banks safe deposit box. It’s just like buying stocks or bonds, he feels that it will increase in value so he invested in it. In fact to me it says he’s a savvy investor, he probably has a vast portfolio of equity/debt and in this he diversified into a different asset class that’s value isn’t tied to the market as directly as most assets. Diversification when you are ultra high net worth like Michael is extremely important and any financial advisor worth his salt working with an individual worth nine figures will advise a portfolio consist of equities, debt, insurance contracts, art, property, precious metals, and yes precious gemstones, amongst other assets. So no, you’re entire theory that Michael is “weak minded” for buying a “red pebble” is completely incorrect and honestly ignorant. You do realize that precious gems have been considered a great store of value for thousands of years? Literally one of the oldest and most consistent asset classes. Not only are you wrong, and ignorant, but your entire demeanor is rude and demeaning, throwing around insults when you are so obviously uninformed on the subject just because you can, while hiding behind the veil of internet anonymity. Really good look that, you’ve coincidentally revealed quite a bit about your character and I’m sorry but it not looking good. So congrats, not only are you an ignoramus masquerading as informed but you’re also a prick! Hard to do in just a few sentences but you’ve done it.

Hello Katherine
The Argyle diamond mine has not closed down, Rio Tino's other mine in the Kimberly Ellendale has closed, it produced yellow diamonds. Michael's diamond would have been from their exclusive yearly tender sale. Also the Argyle mine has produced approximately 90% of all pink diamond's in the world. All the best from Australia.

As of 2020 the Argyle mine is closed. I bought a fancy intense princess cut purplish-pink back in 2011. As of now (2024) it has more than tripled in price.

Diamonds are like oil. There is so much out there, and it keeps coming, but the people in control limit the outflow. I will agree that the red is rare, but diamonds in general seem as rare as gravel in your driveway.

@bighands69

They are only limiting the flow because it would be too expensive to mine them. It requires lots of resources, security and skills to actually mine Diamonds. It is not the price of selling it is the price of production.
@gregschaust4298

Diamonds as a mineral are not rare in the slightest bit. High quality gem grade diamonds are rare. The better the clarity and color, the more rare it is. Probably less than 5% of diamonds that are mined are gem grade. Less than half of that are good color. Half of those are good color and exceptional clarity. So maybe 1% of diamonds are exceptional. Then you add the rarity of large size. I am sure you see where this is going. Which is why they are worth money. I see this argument so many times about the value of diamonds, but it always made by the uneducated in regards to gems.

They serve heads of state, CEOs, royalty, celebrities, athletes, essentially only ultra high net worth individuals, it’s a few steps above your average Gucci store that randos waltz in just to gawk at the price tags.
