My 1978 Jeep CJ5 "SARGE" modifications

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This video details what modifications I have done since purchasing in May of 2021. I've always loved Jeeps. Since I was a kid I would look in awe of them in how they can go anywhere and climb most anything if you're willing to hang on. This video is about my 1978 Jeep CJ5 or as I call him "SARGE". He's the basic no frills Jeep, the fun kind!

Thanks for the Video. I have owned several Jeep. Mb3 or something and a 2000 Cherokee Sport. I am a TN Caver since 1967. So I caved wifh guys that had 4 wheel drive. In Oct 1977 I purchased a 1978 CJ-5 Sun Orange CJ-5 and Drove it for Over 250k miles with very little trouble. In 86 I traded it for a Truck for my Business. My wife and kids all cried. It is a jeep thing. Nothing Like a jeep. My wife put many miles on it as well. So a few years ago I decided to find an old 78 to restore. Wow. I have a ton of work..New fuel tank. Rebuilt Calipers and wheel cylinders. New Seats New Top Repaired Blinkers Steering Shaft Bearing Rebuilt Carb twice Carter 1 bl. New hoses Heater Fan Mtr. Starter Front links Valve cover gasket Change fluids marker lights parking lights tail light oil presdure gauge volt meter wiper blades floor plugs spark plugs distributer cap rotar pads brake shoes and more I have forgot. Oil pressure (real gauge) is great cold but will drop to 12 idle and about 30 35 at 40-50 mph. It is the 232 I-6, Dana 20, Trem 150 3 speed, Dana 20 transfer, Dana 20 rear w 2 pc axels Rear and 30 front.. Stock Stock. New Tires n Wagon Wheel Rims. It was a Moca Brown Levi Edison with Tan Interior. Chrome Rocker trim, probably Renegade, Dash Pad and inter lights. Chrome Custom Bumper front and Hitch. Bumperets Rear. Trim Detail is on Vin tag on the 78's. I have some body work Rust and Welding to do yet. Needs Body mounts and Paint. Drive it a lot. These engines don't develope a lotta oil pressure. the factory gauge is all but useless. Unless someone put 12 volts on your temp / fuel gauges you can power them with a LM 7805 5 vdc regulated chip and use original old bi'metal gages. I have built a new valance from 1/8" to replace the body valance on the rear and some flooring and support channels with 3/4 unistrut. No tailgate. 15 miles per gallon. Thanks for your video. The 78 was the first year the cowen vent was set on top of the cowan. TN Caver and getting a bit old to rappel 200 ft pits now. If you been to Fall Creek Falls the big cave the state bought was me and my NSS caver buddies Find in 1978. Camps Gulf Saltpeter Cave and many more.. It was in Barr's book but location was way wrong. My jeep ran all over TN. Better than New. I can repair anything on it. No Service Shops Needed. LOVE YOUR JEEP. THANKS AGAIN. RON

Thank you for your reply! I have done some caving myself around my house (Carpenters cave in Holland KY). Looks like you enjoyed your ride and you're right, the 258 has low oil pressure! I have a "real" gauge as well :)

I bought my "sarge" in Hilo Hawaii, same year '78, Renogade... 1999 I dropped in it, a '64 chevy 327 with headers, 4 barrel, flowmasers, 91/2 inch ovrstock ranch lift. Still have it now in Texas. Thanks for sharing your jeep.

Great zjeep! The syar logo comes from the jeep used by Gen. Patten during World War II. Kind of patriotic if you think about it.

I used corroseal on my jeep - remember that it's only a metal primer, and not a paint! Corroseal will let go, because it's not UV stable, and will flake off after about a year. (It's happened to me) I did that two years ago, and the rust has not returned. I first while wheeled everything with a drill and an angle grinder, then I washed the area with dish soap and water (rust is a result of water, or contaminants, the soap and water gets the contaminants off), then I used corroseal to get the rust that I was not able to remove with grinding and washing, that was in the pits. I think I did 3 coats. Then I painted over it with tractor paint, or herculiner depending on the area. I preferred using a brush over a spray can - it's cheaper, and you get more paint on the surface. The thicker the paint, the more protection you have. Scuff with sandpaper between each coat, and remove the dust with a rag and mineral spirits. My jeep was all rusted out in places, and I had to weld it back together, but wanted to save what I could. So far that treatment of the rust has worked very well! I also sprayed part of the bottom with wax undercoat, but it just seems to make everything hard to work with. Sarge is better than a Rubicon - he doesn't need a badge to know that he will make it down the Rubicon Trail! He probably gets more attention than a new Rubicon anyway! My jeep does!

Fun video and great jeep Jeff. It looks like you started with a solid platform. I have a YJ project that started a little rougher and still has many leaks that I am working through as time and budget allows. Keep up the good work!
