My 1968 AMC Rambler American 4 Door Sedan

A little video to introduce you to the 1968 Rambler American sedan I have. It went from a trailer tow home to the runner you see now. This summer, we have more upgrades for it. Going to keep it just a fun little cruiser with the 199 ci straight 6. Check back from time to time to see progress.

I have been an AMC/Rambler fan since a teenager, my parents having owned 3 of various sorts. They were the underdogs that I always rooted for. Sad to see them go under in the late 80's. Never owned one myself, as my interests turned to VWs as my first drivers. Great to see your wonderful example of simpler times! Also, your reference to WLS jogged my memories. I grew up in Lansing, Mi. and could get WLS late at night. When I moved to Springfield, Mo. for college, I could still get it late at night and most anywhere in between on those trips home from college. :)

Thanks for the view. I got my first Gremlin in the mid 80s and loved them ever since. WLS was truly a treat. No radio like that anymore.

I learned how to drive on a 68 Rambler. I remember the smell of the interior, I believe it was natural fiber stuffed seats that gave it that smell.

That ole-girl is basically in fine shape. That Teal color is classic AMC! I VOTE✔️ that you reconsider painting the engine bay - instead, clean it up, detail it, and leave it original. That matt black does that car no justice. Pah-leaze return it to original, pah-leze! That car is so basic and easy to repair and work on. May I suggest that while you are working the kick-down on that old Borg-Warner that you have the reverse bands checked - they are notorious. In my AMC enthusiast enthusiasm [🤔] you have a ever-so-slightly gem in the rough there. In my amateur opinion it won't take a whole lotta effort & $ to do it right! Just sayin'... Good luck.

This brings back some real memories. My high school car in the early 80s was a 1967 Rambler American 220 4 door, pale yellow, 199/3 speed on the column. Stripped almost to the bone. No lighter, an AM radio with no push buttons, dog dish hubcaps. It was a good little car, bought it for $275 from the older gentleman down the street that had used it as his fishing car. If you decide to modify there are some terrific upgrades that are pretty simple. The AMC sixes became the Jeep 4.0 liter and it remained in production through 2006. This swap is very straightforward and has been done on many Jeeps, Gremlins, Ramblers and Pacers. Many modern conveniences and added power plus durability. People talk about V8 swaps but these chassis are built pretty light, and that later six would make it much more drivable. Probably even more important would be getting disc brakes on the front. AMC's use of bolt-on spindles (friend to trailer builders everywhere) makes this another very simple upgrade. Disc brake spindles from a later Hornet or Concord will go right on, and that's a huge improvement in safety. Hopefully there are still some kicking around salvage yards in your area - spindles and proportioning valve needed. Since AMC sourced the brakes from Ford new calipers and other components are still common and affordable. Good luck with your project- looks fun.

Thanks for the view. It’s a lot of good ideas. Some of these I wouldn’t mind doing. There are still plenty of Jeep parts around.

Seen quite a few trailers built with AMC front spindles (1). The Rambler still has the old trunnion front suspension. Not sure if the front spindles are the same. While an upgrade to front discs is probably a good idea bigger brakes do not necessarily mean an outstanding increase in braking performance. The tires have a lot to do with it. Swapping in a 4.0 and automatic should probably be a great increase in drivability. But your mileage may suffer. 1) Another donor rear axle setup l have always thought would make a great light utility trailer is the rear suspension from an Alliance or Encore. Torsion bar on one side with a torsion tube over the torsion bar on the other. Trailing arms. The whole unit bolts in as a complete package. Probably pretty hard to find now.

Bought a 1969 model in 1975 in Toronto and drove via the US and Canada to Vancouver over a couple of months. Basic 4 door with power brakes and auto. Was very surprised that it had vacuum wipers, but going up hill you just had to back off now and then to get them to wipe. Other than a little trouble with the auto choke stopping working, the car did well and I sold it for what I paid for it C$ 800. Please restore it to original, very few left that are not modified!

I would consider gloss blue like the trampoline behind you for the wheels although I like red. I'd also consider new brakes like Wilwood, suspension, front end components and steering to support a 383 or more cubic inch engine, tranny and rear end.
