My 13-Year-Old Child Drinks Vodka Every Friday | Health Documentary | Absolute Documentaries

From obesity to alcohol misuse, from rotting baby teeth to hearing problems caused by passive smoking - Britain’s largest children’s hospital is treating younger and younger patients for health problems that are ultimately preventable. Many are the result of kids’ lifestyles and are, according to the experts, causing them unnecessary suffering.
With unprecedented access to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool, this documentary meets the kids, the pediatricians treating them, and follows them home in an attempt to uncover the root cause of their problems. It is clear that some of the basic health messages from the doctors are not getting through to parents.
The A&E is a busy department and having to deal with cases such as drunk children is not only time-consuming for staff but can be upsetting for other young patients too. Operations on dental, glue ear, and obesity cases are helping clog up a system that’s already under considerable strain. The hospital estimates they spend around a million pounds a year on treating preventable conditions, enough to buy them a new MRI scanner.

At least she understood it was her fault though. Too many parents are like Leon’s mum, trying to point fingers everywhere other than themselves. When I worked in operating theatres (years after this documentary was made) I saw a lot of kids having rotten teeth out, many kids also overweight, and mollycoddling parents insisting that it wasn’t their fault (despite them being the ones to buy the food and drink, to back down at the tantrum not wanting to brush their teeth, to give them sweets constantly). At least these are milk teeth that are being extracted; we had a boy of about 11 who had several adult teeth pulled because of decay, facilitated by a mother who treated him like a baby - naturally he behaved like a toddler.

This documentary glosses over the fact that this hospital is serving and many of the patients shown are functioning well below the poverty line. They try to brush off the poverty angle, but poverty is frequently the reason kids have poor nutrition, poor dental health, rely on sugary drinks, and have a lack of education (to say nothing about the correlation to smoking). Case in point, I drank from a bottle until I was 6 for better or worse at bed time. I never had any tooth decay or any teeth removed, but I had access to good dental care and parents who were home and not working multiple jobs to enforce brushing.

Leon’s mom is absolutely detached from reality. She’s insane. It’s clear that she loves her son, but she is literally killing him. And frankly, her unwillingness to accept ANY responsibility for his condition (force feeding him too much food and forcing him in a wheelchair) makes me fear for his life in the long run. He will be dead if his mom isn’t stopped. Her facial expressions when she is put on the spot about over feeding him actually scare me. Her eyes get so wide and crazy that you can see something isn’t right with her.

Actually, her part of the story sounds a bit different. The crew had 2 hours to film and they wanted to capture everything. Hence, she is constantly asking him about snacks, although he is clearly not hungry, so she can show what he usually eats at home. She claims, he only had a couple of spoons from that dish. Same with the wheelchair - according to her, it is reserved only for longer outings. The reason she was offering him the chair so much was, again, so that he can be filmed on camera while sitting on it. And while I agree that that plate was way too large and that there is no real need for the wheelchair, may we also agree that this video is very manipulative as well?

Yeah, sounds legit but have you considered that the welfare system isn't equipped to handle these children any better than their parents? It's chronically underfunded, with all forms of healthcare dramatically underserved, not to mention that there is a strong tradition of good foster families but also extremely abusive ones as well, in all Western countries that employ this system. It's all very well to denounce the parents but if you're not aware of the wider political situation in the UK, and specifically the circumstances in the countries these people live in (because the UK is made up of multiple countries with multiple systems of government, though England lords it over Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales), then it's ultimately incredibly unhelpful to just lay blame and expect the government to pick up the slack. The government is CAUSING this situation. Check the Tory attitudes towards these issues - they only care enough to blame, not to help. This is coming from someone who grew up in a neglectful, abusive home and who is genuinely grateful I was never taken into care, because it could have been a lot worse. Yes, it could have been better, but that is the exception, not the rule, under these circumstances.

I was really smacking my head when that woman was claiming that her 5-year-old's obesity couldn't be her fault because the massive amount of food she's feeding him is healthy. She obviously loves her son and wants him to be healthy but she can't seem to grasp that too much of a good thing can be harmful.

Oh my God, Leon’s mom has serious issues. Even ”healthy” food can make you gain weight when you eat way way way too much of it. Calories are calories. I despise her defensiveness. Mistakes are one thing, but when the doctors tell you what you need to do for your child’s health and you refuse, that’s absolutely not okay. She should be ashamed of herself.

She's just in denial, and doesn't want to accept responsibility for his obesity. She's not intentionally harming him, she is stubborn, and refusing to accept what the doctor is telling her.

Yeah, she should've been counting calories, the poor kid was only 5 and eating adult sized portions. She was probably too afraid to let him exercise and run around which is what kids that age do for 25% of the time anyway. If I was the doctor and she said she wasn't going to change I'd be threatening to call CPS because that says she's 100% okay with abusing her child.

And they actually asked him to sit in the wheelchair, he didnt ask to. So evidently he probably would have continued walking but the mother and Grandmother but a stop to that. And most other times he was sitting down, normally with food.
