Here are my 10 rules for photographing Epic landscapes
1. Go to a beautiful place.
That seems simple but it is the base for a nice landscape photo
2. Find the Right Composition during the day.
you can see better during the day and it easier to find the right framings
3. Balance the Right foreground element
This is probably the most important point for me in composition, finding the right foreground not too small not too big that helps communicate a strong story and give a sense of depths and from where to look
4. Follow the Leading lines
Again this helps direct the eyes and to give depth and interest to a photo
5. Avoid High Frequency textures.
probably the most frequent error I see, lots of sands and rocks that are confusing to see
6. Shoot Manual
it is a great way to be sure your exposure is right on, and you can easily synch a retouch from one photo to the next in Lightroom that way
7. Use a tripod with a self timer
Make sure you are at 100 iso and your photo is sharp
8. Manual focus on the Middle Ground
At night the focusing can be off by focusing on the main subject manually and zooming in with you lens to be sure you are sharp is super important.
9. Play with Long exposure
When you have Clouds and water long exposure is a cool effect. I recommend .5 second for waves.
10. Slightly under expose your photo
The best way to get the best sky while still having enough light for your main subject

Hi Serge I love this tutorial. I plan on going to Oregon along the coast during the month of August. I was just wondering I think you said in your tutorial that the photos you took were from Oregon. Is it possible that you could just list the places where you took the photos? If so that would be a great idea it would help me on my trip next month to the coast of Oregon. Thanks again for your great tutorials. Pat Hogarty

Good tip about the halos. Do you find that the light levels in the photos should be somewhat even (i.e. less prominent bright spots)?

I'd use the hyperfocal distance instead of focusing in the middle

Hyperfocal Dis. dont need. Just focus on the lower third of the picture. Its about the same like using the hyperfocal dis. Whitout a laser distance scanner u cant get the exact distance of your foreground Element.
I'm sorry if I missed this info from past videos but can you tell me what filter system you use ... lee, nisi, or haido (spelled right?)

Hi Serge --Recently bought your full package and will be getting down to work on it soon. Question about 4x5 for Instagram. They still crop to square for the feed. Are you not concerned about turning over your cropping to the instagram algorithm?
@SergeRamelliPhotography
5 жыл бұрын
Well I checked with statistics and the more space your photo take on one’s screen will get more attention so this is why I aim for the 4x5
@alrobertson1432

@@SergeRamelliPhotography Thanks for the quick reply. How did you check the statistics? Been meaning to mention to you that I spend a lot of time in Northern France, near Amiens. I saw a video a while ago where you mentioned that you liked visiting there. If you are ever there again, check out les etangs du somme--not far away and running for quite some distance up and down the river. My french isn't so good so I'll repeat in English. The etangs along the Somme River. There are lots of great photo ops, with large, calm, patches of water and tons of really picturesque stuff.

This doesn’t link in with the video much, but is it a bad thing to use the LCD screen instead of looking through the viewfinder to take photos? I personally use the LCD screen and achieve the image I want, but I always feel conscious of people judging me for not ‘looking professional’ and using the viewfinder. Are their pros and cons? This could even be a topic for a future KZread video

this isnt me being negative and im a very amateur photographer. the images look amazing. but my only reservation is it almost false. the colours were not there on the original image but "added in" lightroom. isnt the art of photography getting the best image of whats actually there and not making it look like what you wanted it to?
@SergeRamelliPhotography
5 жыл бұрын
Well as a raw file you don’t get the retouches version so I developed it in Lightroom the way it was when I was taking the photos, then you can add stuff to create an emotional impact but that is up to you!
i can't remember this.
Basically. The secret is to purchase any camera, but definitely purchase a expensive software editing suite.

Serge, youtube is an amazing tool and can teach to everyone anything about photography. I agree with your rules about landscape photography but your post-processing .....It seems that you try to teach people something while you have no evolution on that at least for the last 7 years I have watched some of your videos. Have nothing but respect for you but don't you think it is time to evolve your workflow in LR? I think that it is time for you to watch some amazing tutorials about post-processing from other guys out there.No need to name any of them...I am sure you know the best of them
@SergeRamelliPhotography

I am a very curious guy and I am learning everyday! I feel that my workflow changed a lot throughout the years but you are right I didn’t change dramatically but I feel that my look was way more hdr and saturated before and now it is much more natural :-)
@lefkris9596
4 жыл бұрын
@@SergeRamelliPhotography Have you ever seen with your own eyes so colorful magentas or blues etc out in nature? I don't think so because if you have probably we live on a different planet :-) Probably you like the colorful look on your images but they are far away from the natural look. When I started photography 7 years ago I watched some of your videos and after all these years I don't see any change to your workflow, to be honest. Michael Shainblum , Andy Mumford, Thomas Heaton , Jimmy McIntyreare some of the photographers that really love colorful images too but it seems that they have found a great balance to keep them ''real''.Of course, they don't use just LR but neither you do ;-).Maybe my critic is opposite to what you are used to but I will always believe that the bad critic is much more helpful than the good critic especially in photography. Have a great day! :-)
Another great video! If you ever come to Bend, OR and want to shoot some beautiful landscape & waterfalls let me know. I'm out on the trails all the time. And once I have taken your classes, I will actually be able to produce some decent photos of my own! Keep up the amazing work. Love It!
