My #1 Go-To Piece of Winter Running Gear & Why You Need One For Cold Weather Running

Спорт

Whether you’re a seasoned runner or just getting into running you might not know where to start for cold weather gear. I have been running in the freezing, snowy Utah winters for more than 15 years. It has been my experience that adding the right outer shell can make the biggest difference to cold weather running. Before you disagree, let me explain why I feel this way, and how to choose the best shell.

My gore shakedry rainjacket is the most breathable jacket I've tried

I absolutely agree that the windbreaker is the go-to winter running gear. Big fan of my Patagonia Houdini, but it can leave me cold and miserable after a rocky mountain monsoon.

I haven't run a lot in the rain with mine, but the few times i have they seemed to insulate fairly well and dry quickly. But it was never a full-on monsoon!

Look at Brynje mesh base layers, Polartec Alpha Direct tops and Pertex Quantum Air windshirt.

Scandinavian fishnet/mesh base layers: +Breathability +very warm when there is a layer over them (does nicely with a running jacket over it) +minimal skin contact area-->even if it is soaked it's mostly not too bad (Most consistent insulating performance I've encountered.... I just don't think much about the danger of soaking the base layer when I'm using them.). +doesn't hold much water compared to solid shirts +Oddly suited to use with a T-shirt and running sleeves at intermediate temperature ranges (~ 40F), which provide better temperature regulation options than simply layering a long sleeve shirt. +/- If you aren't careful, you can create a layering scheme that is so breathable that wind just goes right through it. I've had pairings where I'm perfectly fine going away from the wind and freezing going into it (first time I've really felt that directional windproofing would be nice). -Socially unacceptable unless covered Cycling mesh layers: Basically a worse version of everything that I listed (and chafes like mad). More surface contact with skin and less separation created with next layer. Example, the soaked shirt. If I submerge a T-shirt in water and put it on over a cycling mesh layer, it's pretty horrible (less horrible than on bare skin, but not by much). If I put the soaked T-shirt over scandinavian mesh, it's pretty ok.

I love the button on my Salomon windbreakers as well but when it comes to breathability it's just not enough. In situations I know I need wind protection and I don't want to compromise on that by "simulating" breathability by opening the zipper I simply grab another jacket -- typically a one made of a ultralight softshell or Pertex Quantum Air or equivalent material. Salomon windbreakers are good but their noname materials cannot compete with the best of the best and I've already regretted taking them on a few occasions where I then suffered from moisture buildup despite having the Salomon button and also vented armpits. For moderate and low intensity activities they are spot on tho. Also, if you want a waterproof jacket that is breathable in a way you would never expect from a hardshell jacket try anything made of Pertex Shield Air. No, I'm not sponsored by Pertex :) Their materials simply are top of the game and are ubiquitous to a point where it's pretty much impossible to not register them (at least here in the EU) if one has any slightly higher level of interest in outdoor clothing.

Very interesting to hear your perspective! I think the reason I may have had a better experience with the Salomon windbreakers is likely due to the wind here. I rarely go on a winter run without at least some sort of breeze. So when I use the salomon button it really opens up the jacket! With that said, you have piqued my interest in this Pertex brand. Unfortunately after a quick google search I'm not finding options to buy them here. I'll have to keep looking. Thanks for the recommendation!

@@JustAnotherRunner There are quite a few outdoor companies that sell in the US and carry Pertex Quantum products, including some of the biggest ones - Patagonia, TNF, Marmot, Mountain Hardwear (not sure if windbreakers tho, more likely insulated jackets combining PQA with Primaloft or Climashield Apex). And then many of the european top brands like Ortovox, Mammut, PeakPeformance, Millet... Actually, even Salomon uses PQA on some products :)

@@JustAnotherRunnerbtw, I actually bought my first Pertex jacket when I lived in the US for a brief period of time ;) Marmot Alpha 60 - epic active insulation layer that combines PQA with the best active insulator on the outdoor market currently - Polartec Alpha. That was in 2019, not sure if they are still selling it.

@ oh I thought that was the name of the jacket. I didn't realize it was the material that brands can use. Makes sense. Thanks!

"creating a greenhouse in your jacket...". That. was. good. And true for my rain coat. Side question: is there ever a point for you and others there in the town where it pays to live where the snow gets too deep to run?

Haha I'm glad you appreciated that! I'm not sure what you mean with your side question. There are many lower trails here that are runnable year-round. It's the high trails that get too much snow and not enough traffic. So I do miss them for a couple months.

Inspiring me to get out in the snow as always! What are your thoughts on waterproof shoes? Does that elevate the winter/snow running experience dramatically??

Max! We need to get out on a run sometime. I miss the cache valley trails. I personally love my waterproof shoes for snow running. Are the absolutely necessary...? Probably not. I didn't have waterproof shoes for years. They do make a difference if you are blazing trail with 4+ inches of new snow. If the trail is already packed then there's arguably no need.

100% #1 is a water resistant compressible shell. I do switch to waterproof in high wind or really wet conditions. My list continues #2 wool hiking socks #3 a buff #4 glove liner and wool cap....

That jacket is 2 years old. It was the "Bonnatti Wind" or something like that. I don't think they make that exact jacket anymore but it looks like they have a new version. I haven't tried it tho.
