Diesel engine aside the Cutlass Ciera got to be a really good car for Oldsmobile and a very good seller for many years. My grandparents had several of them with zero issues

Adjusted for inflation, this car cost about $42,000 in today's money. For an 85 horsepower engine with known issues. Holy ****, no wonder Toyota and Honda were eating their lunch.

The title is inaccurate, this is the 84 model not the 82. Folks don't seem to understand that pretty much all the bugs were worked out of the 4.3 diesel by 84. As with lots of other GM cars, the damage to the reputation was already done. My aunt had this exact car, same color and everything. I remember it fondly well into the late 90s. She never had a problem with it even in frigid Midwest winters. That said she WAS an experienced diesel operator having owned a Scout and a Mercedes Benz that were both diesel before she got this ciera. I'm sure that experience made a difference in the reliability of it. The 43mpg highway rating was legit too, she made many road trips between Central Iowa and the high country of Colorado averaging well over 40mpg every time.
