Nice, I like the pointer about passing the top thread through the next hole. That has been my only issue with using the machine over a hand-stitch.

Thanks! Very helpful, joined the facebook group. I know how to saddle stitch also, but this machine provides another alternative. And it will work well with heavy fabrics such as canvas, I imagine. It's not very elegant, but it gets the job done. It looks pretty steampunky too, in my opinion.

Caroline Mernin what I turned was the tabs. That changes the direction of the pull of the feet, not the needle. But I can imagine your surprise.

To back stitch, turn the walking foot 180 degrees and stitch over your existing work. Then turn the walking foot 180 degrees to the original direction and lay down a few more stitches. Done

overlycreative1 the problem with backstitching with this machine is that it sometimes breaks the thread when you do that.

It looks like I will be experiencing a big learning curve as I just ordered one on E-Bay. I think it would be good for sewing knee patches on jeans. That's impossible for me to do on my old Singer. Thanks for the nice video, a very helpful tutorial.

towards the end he states that the pusher foot needs to be filed down a bit to reduce marks on the leather, this may help but the best way to reduce this damage using the spring tensioner on the underside of the arm. In my case the adjuster screw is too short to reduce the the tension enough, I made a longer one, it´s an easy job. As this is a "patcher" machine it shouldn´t be used to sew much more than 6mm leather (even though it can sew more). It should also use a pointed needle not a chisel point otherwise when you go "round a corner" the chisel cut will keep the same orientation

SO SORRY... did not see your question. The screw is standard, so turn the nut clockwise to tighten the tension.

I want to sew leather with the machine using heavy thick thread. What size needles do you use? The ones that came with the machine have very small holes. Your videos got me stitching this evening. Very good teaching-scommunication. Thanks.

Thank you for asking. This will be long, please bare with me. This machine is a replica of the Singer 29K model. As such, it has the similar if not the same capabilities. NOW... the machine I got came with the needles in a small package. The package has the following numbers: HAX1 | 15X1 | 16/100 The numbers when researched online lead me to believe that they are a general purpose needle that is made by Schmetz. On their website, they state that the HAX1 replaces the Singer 2020 needles. Link:sewingsupplywarehouse.com/schmetzsewing.html The thread used for this needle should not exceed the Jean size thread you will commonly find in any store, usually made from polyester. (I am using coat thread on mine currently, works fine, no bunching underneath; its thin so I get quite a bit on the bobbin.) General info says your eyelet sie should be 40% larger than your thread size. Now a Tippmann can use a thread up to a size 69 to 415; which means that this machine could/should be able to do just about the same, but the bobbin size is small, so take that into account. I also note that the part to insert the needle on this machine is different than my Singer Industrial which means that I can put a heavier needle into it. I still have not used thicker needles, but will have to do some tryouts now because of all the questions. Here is where it all gets real technical. Matching the thread size to the needle size is going to be the important part! Also, testing the machine with thicker thread by adjusting the tensions on top and bottom. So... the technical info I have found is the following (if you know better, and info is wrong, please let me know and I will correct typos.) Based on the following links: 1. www.thethreadexchange.com/miva/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Category_Code=needles_thread_size_chart 2. www.superiorthreads.com/education-thread-for-sewing-on-leather This machine's needles need to be: Needle Type - Wedge Point -- Thread type Size 14/90 --- 40 weight thread -- Bonded nylon Size 16/100 - 30 weight thread -- Bonded nylon *Important!! You must remember that thicker thread will take up more space on the bobbin, so less thread for heavier as this machine has a small bobbin. You will need to reduce the tension on the spring on the top with heavier thread, and also on the bobbin (if you use the leaf spring on it, with thinner thread, I use it and loosen it just a tad) to keep things running smoothly. Dose this machine works good.

My string is breaking as I sew. I start with one stitch and another stitch and my string starts to fray and then it breaks. What’s going on is it too much tension on the string or do I need to adjust the pressure on the needle inserting the leather. Thank you

Could be a bad needle. They need to be changed often. A small burr or sharp edge will cause that.

I purchased my cobbler shoe patching machine and made all adjustments lubed it up and got the needle to pickup the bobbin thread, but when I start sewing the first two stitches the top thread break off like its being torn in the bobbin are, do you have any idea to fix this, I have cleaned and polished the shuttle for the bobbin and bobbin its self.

If its being torn... 1. Make sure there is not too much tension on the top thread. Loosen the spring screw on the front a bit, try again... 2. Pull on the thread from the bobbin... if its too hard to pull, then the tension spring on the bobbin is too tight. Open up the bobbin, loosen that leaf spring, try again... 3. Look at all the holes where the thread runs.. make sure they are clear, also make sure the bobbin thread holes are large enough to let the thread move freely (this has been the case with some people and they have to grind the holes a bit larger.) Hope one of those options fixes things!

Thank you Sir, and I found the issue, I was using to large of a thread and to small of a needle, so I need to get a larger needle for the thread that I want to use which is a T210 or T270, and that thread size requires a 25/220, so thanks for the help.

If you file down the presser foot teeth so that it doesn't leave marks on the leather surface will it still grip? I know what you said but I'd like to see that demonstrated. Thanks.

I filed them down just enough as to not cut into the leather. If you look up the walking foot of say a Cobra Class 4, it is actually smooth. IF/WHEN I get replacement parts, I will try to completely smooth one and see how it behaves.

@@user-eo2wv3jn7g The teeth of the pressor foot can be filed down with a flat file a little at a time, then re-test on the material you will be using. Leather will show the sharp teeth more than other fabrics but may also tear up vinyl real easy. Just go flat across the teeth until happy with results. Replacements pressor foots are available from Bantam Supply shown in other posts. Hope this helps you sew with results desired.

I got the machine the other day, but for some reason I am unable to crank it easily. It gets stuck in the same spot each turn. Would any of you have suggestions on how to troubleshoot it? Thank you.

Try to be sure to oil the areas with bearings. Check to see if all arms are running in their correct indentations on the back of the crank wheel.

Chris Ladson check the comments below. From what I gather you have one of two problems. 1. Your bobbin thread does not have the right tension. 2. Your thread is not the right size. Solution 1. Check the video where I explain the bobbin winding and the tension spring. After installing the thread and cranking it once, your thread should come up and you should have to pull with a bit of force to get the thread up. If it takes too much force or too little that is because the spring is too tight or too loose. Solution 2. Check to see that the hole of the needle allows the thread to pass through easily and that it is inserted from left to right (towards the hand crank). Threads not freely moving or in the wrong direction cause problems. Lastly. Of all that is correct. Check the tension spring on the front of the machine with the two plates. Thread should be between them and should have some resistance to pull. Too tight or too lose is not good. The rest you will learn from dialing it in. And just in case. Make sure anywhere that there is a hole where thread goes through... is clean and burr free. You may need to make the hold where the needle passes a bit larger, or the divot on the front under the plate a bit bigger if it’s catching the thread. Do this with a file and patience. Do not take too much off. Hope this helps. Sorry for the delay in answering.

Check EVERYTHING. Something is definitely not in the right orientation, place, or tensioned.

I bought one of these. They work fine BUT...the bobbin is way to small. I ran a belt through using button hole thread and one bobbin worked for the belt. When I switched to T90 thread to get a better thread appearance the bobbin ran out 2/3 of the way through. I didn't catch it right away and had to try to match up 30 holes in the belt to finish it. Lost a lot of time on this. Once you punch leather you have to hit the holes exactly to fix errors. That said, it's a great machine for small projects with shorter stitch runs.

I agree with you in some parts. Especially if you want to use thicker thread. BUT I do believe that all machines will suffer this. Thicker thread, means less on the limited bobbin space. For a belt... I do it by hand.

What do you do when it doesn't make tight stitches?

You will want to play with the tension. First tighten the top a bit, and also take out the bobbin and ensure your thread is under the spring leaf, if that is okay, then tighten that screw a bit. That is the way to tighten the stitches.

I have been using upholstery nylon thread. If you want to use thicker. You will need to get a needle with a larger hole.

mendezboy tv - I would recommend putting some spray adhesive down on the shoes first and then sewing them on for a more permanent application. The small part of the machine could go inside the shoe and you could sew it while the shoe is intact. I would recommend looking up videos on adding fabric to shoes, just in case you have not done it before. The machine WILL go through the material.

Raul Rodriguez make sure that the walking foot is rotated to face like in the video at the beginning. Email a picture of your setup to help better.

Drop your needle into the material FIRST to accurately place your first stitch. Use the crank @ 7:00-7:30 position to turn the foot without the lift lever => speeds up the corners immensely!

@@BrassrootsLeather I just used a large flat bastard file to dress my pressor foot. Also, the marks disappear after a few minutes. I see the bobbing thread on the top of the stitch, I have played with bobbing tension using #1 bottom to #2 top with better results using #136 thread on top, but T90 on bottom. Have you had issues using longer stitch and keeping it from twisting? Certain needles with produce a twist, but I have tired 7 types and different tensions, top & bottom. I am going for the "Visible" French seam reinforced stitch and finding the twist in the final results. Short stitches, not so much, but longer like 1.5 per cm / 10 mm. Any thoughts? ASE Master Tech / Retired Nice clear video & demo.

@@deankay4434 Sorry about the delay... I usually try to keep my stitches at about 1/4" distance while using this machine. I have also not used different needles than those that came with it. I know there is a facebook group that has a lot on this subject now and many folks have been making charts for needle usage and thread. I do sometimes have thread breakage, but its usually due to something I did wrong, like the bottom thread not in the right place, or the tension is not set correctly. I see the price of this machine has doubled to a point if you consistently sew leather one may as well buy a machine made for leather work. As far as sewing shoes, when was the last time you needed to sew a shoe? It was a novelty toy worth buying at $100 but not anymore.

YES, this is true. But, as a hobby leather crafter, I use it for other things... it came great to sew a reinforcement piece on a glove, and the machine was inside the glove, the head rotated and I got it on there in one shot without rotating the glove. Also, this thing is not an edger... so its hard to do that side seam that some specialty machines like the Goodyear Xs0045 can do quickly. But this machine's small footprint does let it get into spaces other ones like the COBRA cannot, as it is made for flat, long, open pieces... not tight spots.

Cowboy sells for 1200. Old Singer 8-1200. etc. I get your point quality, nice stitching ! Im very interested in this one for the reachability. I saw another in China that had the lower arm set lower and the bobbin part was on a higher level like an upside down shoe/heel... You can stitch right around the inside front of a shoe with no problema ! Don't know if can do with this unit too. That would be worth the price of a toy. banggood for under 140 right now. In China I have a feeling they are not novelty so much. Crappy tools crappy work but in the right hands it's not always the price of the tool but how you use it. Minimalism is premium in other countries than the US and they learn to be very crafty with less. Where they us a chunk of trash metal to make a beautiful sculpture, we use the finest steels... it's often in the hands that makes a difference. For me this will be an all around tool canvas leather tire sandals. Am looking forward to my new Toy. Not purty not perfect but functional ... get things finished, perhaps not a holster or knife sheath. ...... I'll probably never want to try one of the fine units as It would only make me sad ! Still though.

@@moonolyth With turning head pressor foot, I was able to sew the knees, inside and out on 6 pairs of jeans that I wore out. I took cuttings from blue jeans completely gone but found matching material and glued a folded edge for backing. Sewed the inside patch first, then outside over it. That alone made back what I paid for it.

(picks up microphone) Oh... you mean that handheld process where you use two needles on one thread, entering a sequence of holes from alternating directions along the edge of your leather until it is all sewn closed... yes... I know it well, and I use it in most of my projects. If you want examples, you can find my IG and FB accounts and you will see how I make most and do sew them this way. BUT The reason for this video is not saddle stitching... its how to use this cheap machine do to what you need it to do... straight stitch. Its not the best machine, and it has a lot of issues, but with perseverance and some patience, you can get it to sew a good line and through about 1/2" of leather. } Thank you for your wonderful, and stimulating comment. I am sure it will help many who read this in knowing how better to sew with the Chinese Leather Patcher machine. This concludes my TEDtalk. (puts down microphone)

I'm sure you can saddle stitch quite well, My comment was mostly aimed at anyone who's thinking of purchasing this cheap Chinese leather patching machine. From what I've seen and read about this machine it's a pile of junk and I've yet to see a nice stitch line made with it. So for all you people who are thinking of purchasing this Cheap Chinese piece of junk, save your money and spend it on a decent set of pricking irons and needles and study the technique of saddle stitching.

Thank you for clearing that up. NOW... if I ever get money to buy a more expensive machine... I will make a new set of video with that one, and we can compare the stitching and all that. The good thing about this cheap machine... you CAN modify it and won't feel guilty of doing so as its cheap and a knock off of the Singer 29. There is a page dedicated to it now on Facebook and there are many who have motors now attached to it! More than one thread above! ...and a better bobbin winder! Be creative people... keep making, and keep sharing great ideas!
