I CAN actually tell the difference, but I’ve listened to classical music for 60 years. You can get a free app for your cell phone that tells you what note it hears. I used it to verify that I was tensioned to C. That’s just past 3.5 on my DeWalt. Really like your videos, Mike - thanks.

Thank you, sir! I am also new at this. I went to our local woodworking show held every year in our community and sat down and cut a design using a scroll saw for the first time. Well, I went out and bought a DW788 and stand. Your video is very helpful and I will work on making sure my table is square to the blade using the cut method you show in your video.

Good info Mike. I have a harbor Freight saw and it works fine for the little bit of scroll sawing I do. With good blades and the right tension it preforms good. Thanks Mike

Thanks for the tips! Im obviously a begginer here watching these videos. I have an older craftsman that required me to purchase the olsen conversion kit to run plain blades. My saw motor is rated at 1700 rpms. My question is on the tension. I have played around with the tension to find that sweat spot. The issue is when I try to get that high C note my saw bogs down and stops cutting thats where I'd like it to cut because I dont have any blade bowing or drifting. I found that when I attach the blade and tighten the tension from loose to 3 or 4 rotations of the knob the saw runs great but the bowing and drifting witch causes me to rely on what I call nibble cuts where when say for instants when I approach sharp or hard curves I will go straight to the hard bend and back out and nibble it out rather than follow the lines. That makes the while project a very slow process! I'm not exactly sure how to get my tension at the sweat spot because like I said if I crank down the tension knob and turn the saw on it runs perfect until I feed the blade with just 1/4 wood to me there is something not right either I've just not learned the tensioning or there is something going on between the tension and the motor. I'm a woodworker by trade so I know what it means to properly install blades and the proper speed to feed the blade and to let the blade do the work! I do know that for the most part that all power tools require there own proper skill to operate correctly and safely! I know this first hand because I come from a long line of carpenters. My grandfather my dad my brother in law myself have all been woodworkers all our lives! Any suggestions would be great. Thank you!

Thanks for this video. I purchased a very small scroll saw, a Proxxon years ago, and put it away in frustration. I kept breaking blades. I would probably not have put it away if I had seen this video. At least I can look at the machine and see if something is wrong now. But tensioning of the blade is still going to be a real fun thing. Hopefully I won't go through a gold mines worth of money to discover the sweet spot. :-) CaleyAnn

Mustache Mike, I need your help, I'm new to this scroll saw thing..i bought a vintage (total shop) scroll saw and I can't find anything on it, I'm wanting to upgrade the blade clamps pinless.. Any advice would be helpful

How to square my Delta 16” blade fore and aft? The top of the blade leans forward

would alittle more information on bevel cutting . types of woods hard/soft Tight turns and it's limits when cutting hard woods...., etc. Thank you ....

Sounds like, get a nice high tone, then try it, and play until you get a nice clean straight cut.

With a chromatic tuner. :-D But i'm not sure that C is the good tune for all the type of blades.
