I like the weather here. I moved from a snowy area and I still go back to snowboard. The flight costs are nothing compared to cost of living in Texas. It really comes down to how you plan booking the flights

The main issue I have is that the food scene in Austin is sorely lacking. Even San Antonio's is better, nevermind DFW or Houston. Infrastructure is worse than the others as well. In terms of N vs S Austin, don't remember who said it, but he said "North is for usefulness, South is for fun".

@@JeremyAKnight The wife and I like Casa Chapala on 183/Research and Terry Black's, but honestly we spend way more time in SATX vs ATX as you can actually get decent ethnic food like Mediterranean and Asian. Heck, even Pinkerton's BBQ in SA (originated in Houston) blows everything out of the water in Austin.

@@JeremyAKnight I'd also try Hays County BBQ, but it's not in Austin proper. It's actually in San Marcos. We do love Razzoo's as well, but technically that's a chain restaurant. The closest location is in Round Rock by the IKEA.

A correction to your voting info. For background I work as an Election deputy/judge and live in Zilker. Travis County votes almost 72% Democrat and that is up 5% from 2016. The people moving in are tilting Travis County further left. The City of Austin votes about 80% Democrat. My neighborhood votes about 90% Democrat.

I assume you mean Californians. The tax burden in California is less then Texas for the average citizen. For wealthy individuals Texas is better. The tax burden on businesses is cheaper in Texas then California. California citizens have health insurance Texas is at the bottom for health insurance and bottom 5 for health care. Also Texas is dead last for women. In fairness to California they get the most taxes taken away and sent to other states. It's fair to say on average Texans get things cheaper as businesses can operate cheaper however they pay a slighty higher burden in taxes and many have no health insurance which is what can literally hurt and make quality of life low. Travis County is an exception because they provide Healthcare for low to middle income families through Dell Seton and Ascension as well as Community Care. FYI Hays County has increased more Democrats then Travis. In 2016 it was 51% Rep to 49 Dem. By 2022 Beto beat Abbott by 11% 😮. And Paxton lost by 14%. All this voting info is available at the county election websites.

South Austin is better. Environmental regulations over the years blocked most development and significantly reduced density so people aren't packed in like sardines (North Austin).

That's why I chose Zilker because it has a lot of protections for good reason. Springs use to flow down the south hills into the Colorado. They still do and most just flow underground as they were paved over and unfortunately the past government did not document the underground flow routes very well so it is detrimental to try to drill down for parking garages which is why those who know are strongly against underground parking in south Austin and Zilker Park.
