I blanked out yesterday night at open mat and couldn't even remember what de la riva is. I realized I never play it because I never felt strong with it. This video changed that. I have seen some of this before and I'm going to use it next time I get to roll. Thank you!

What is this sweep called ?

Dear Professor Gustavo, The way we learned the De La Riva Guard in class is to put the leg all the way to the hip of the oppenent on the other side. So for example in the video the left leg to left hip. I've recently watched another video and it seems like these 2 variations are the most common (if we are not talking about inverting it). What are your opinion of the 2 variations? Do you have a preference? Also the first sweep shown in the video is basically a tomoe nage sweep right? Thank you!

Hi MrSarky1992, the 2 variations are great, they offer different techniques and control. The variation with the deep DLR hook offers more control over the opponent and it's great for back takes, the negative is that exposes that leg for leg attacks, like kneebars, calf-slicers, and entries into honey hole... that's how I also learned 20 years ago... The shallow DLR hook offers a little less control but it's an adaptation to prevent those leglocks. Both are great, just be aware of the possibilities. Yes, the first sweep is also called "balloon" sweep.

i understand this is a basic sweep but it doesn't work for shit on people who aren't white belts

my coach who is a black belt does a variant of this to other black belts, it's hilarious. Jiu jitsu is action-reaction.
