MUST KNOW SKILL: HOW TO WRITE CONSTRUCTION RFIS

The construction RFI process is one of the most important on a construction project for a construction engineer to understand and execute. In this video we go over how to write an RFI, why RFIs are important and give examples of construction RFIs.

0:46 What is an RFI, Why Is It Important
RFI is an acronym meaning Request for Information. Not sure if it's common belief, but most construction projects do not start with a completed design. The contractors do not always have all the information needed from the design teams for the project and that is what the RFI process is for. RFIs really are a means for managing risk on the project. On construction projects that are ever changing, it's important to have a process in place to track these changes and make sure the field is not waiting on information to build.
3:04 The RFI Process
The RFI will start with the contractor or subcontractor, be sent to the project architect, then the architect will send the RFI to the applicable consultants. Upon receiving that, the architect will send the compiled response back to the contractor.
3:48 How to Write an RFI
The goal of your RFI is to have it as a standalone document that can be reviewed without access to the drawings and have the problem completely understood. See the video for each component required. The goal would be to have the RFI as a confirming RFI that has already been vetted verbally with the designers, and the RFI is just documenting that discussion and coordination.

Hi, I am in the process of finding an internship to gain experience. This video has helped me a lot. A lot of my peers has talked about RFI’s with me, and the concepts of them was vague and broad at the time. Thank you so much for the clarification.

Been enjoying your content and inspiring me to pursue my own KZread channel - except on the Bridge/Heavy Civil Engineering side of the profession. Do you ever use RFMs to document contractor requested modifications or RFCs to document proposed corrections to field mistakes?

thanks for the support Matt! wish you the best on your journey. And no, I haven't used that, would you say that's common in your sector? That's interesting to have it split apart, do you know what the reasoning is behind that?

Whats your best sources to get construction method statements (more specifically building finishes) and material specifications. I just jumped into this field and struggling to search for these. Would highly appreciate a response. Thanks!

Not sure exactly what you mean, let me know if I’m misunderstanding. If youre trying to learn more about how finishes are constructed, it’s just going to take time. You could watch videos on how things get installed on KZread but your best ROI in your time is spending time in the field and seeing the process unfold and experiencing the issues.

It depends on your company. Some have programs that automatically do it for you. If you’re just using email you definitely need to have an excel file that everyone updates. RFI meetings with the consultants can help too to make sure nothing is lost in translation
